During an interview with Germany's Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Chairman Bill Gates revealed that Microsoft will not launch a product that competes directly with Apple's iPhone: "No, we won't do that. In the so-called smart phone business we will concentrate solely on software with our Windows Mobile program. We have partnerships with a lot of device manufacturers from Samsung to Motorola and this variety brings us significantly more than if we would make our own mobile phone.” Most people won’t be surprised at this tidbit, but those following Zune Phone rumours are probably quite disappointed. I agree with this move; Microsoft has to perfect the Zune mp3 player before starting another hardware project.

Very good move if you ask me. Rush too much, and be sure to get caught in a hole you dug for yourself.
You have a source for this? Other wise this post is completely useless.
I find it hard to believe that Windows Mobile, which is available on all major mobile carriers world-wide, is being "spanked" by the iPhone which is only available on AT&T (or T-Mobile if you hack it).

What a load... There are probably 1000 times the amount of Windows Mobile devices sold as iPhones. That spanking is all in your head. The only sources I can find that corroborate your comment all got their information from one place: Canalys, a consulting company.

Apple currently has a higher US market share than Microsoft in phones. Microsoft hid behind the world wide statistics (where the iPhone isn't available everywhere) to say they had a higher market share.

RoughtlyDrafted is a Apple fanboi site... it is comparing Apple super hyped launch sales figures which were high to Windows Mobile standard sales of just one quarter.

OMG OMG I SO DIDN'T NOTICE THAT! For your information iPhone has only been selling for a couple of quarters, geez.

I think he basically said that. You can do lots of stuff with sales numbers to make them look like something they're not. I find it amusing that people think Microsoft fudged their Vista sales numbers but nobody else would do it.
OK are you also assuming that MS doesnt sell any at all, i find that incredibly hard to believe ?????
NOPE!.
Ms projected to sold 20mill only 2007, just the 2006 MS sold 7 millions. So we are not sure if MS sold the war on 2007 but still there are many windowsmobile devices that iphone.
Also, take notes that iphone will start selling several years ago using marketing, so wasn't strange that iphone sell well the first months but the rest of the year.
Wrong way round. Watch Bill Gates' CES keynote speech. There's about a million iPhones, and over 20 million Windows Mobile devices. Microsoft dominate without even trying!

Pathetic, is this the only source??? It is quite obvious that this site is an Apple Fanboy site.

No it's not the only source, why didn't you read the article, the source is Symbian.

I don't know where you Apple supporters are getting 10 million iPhones. Apple said themselves that they've sold 4 million, and only 1.12m in the third quarter...

I think if the iPhone interface could be connected with the Windows Mobile OS...well then, now we'd be talking. The best of both worlds, so-to-speak.
thats assuming the SDK isn't locked down and only available to certain companies

The SDK (i guest) will be pretty open for many features (and of course locked to unblock hidden features) BUT any programs will need a digital sign authorized by Apple.
So, for programmers Apple will give a brand new car but keep the keys :-(

I'm an IT professional, and I own the iPhone and prefer it to my previously owned Windows Mobile device. While it is true that the Windows Mobile can "do more" and is currently more customizable (due to the fact that 3rd party development hasn't been unleashed yet), what the iPhone does it does *EXTREMELY* well. Apple products seem to be more thought out, and simpler than MS products. Most people don't want to do Access database on their phones. For many of us, the simplicity of the iPhone with the wonderful integrated software that actually works on the platform that they provide is enough.
+1. N95 is maybe the best mobile released so far.

+1 Agreed.
As said, iPhone is also a good phone & never compare with windows mobile with iphone, because those 2 are unique on there side. I give 100 to iphone & 100 to windows mobile too..
