Market Share 2007: Mac OS gains 3.15%, Vista grabs 10.48%

Throughout 2007, according to reports by Net Applications, Mac OS increased its market share by 3.15% while Vista managed to grab 10.48% market share. Windows XP lost 8.39% of the OS market share in the same time period, quite unsurprising considering Vista is its successor, while Linux increased by 0.26%. Nothing too mind-boggling, but definitely interesting, to say the least. At the end of December 2007, the (incomplete) standings are as follows:

Windows XP - 76.91%
Windows Vista - 10.48%
Mac OS - 7.30%

Windows 2000 - 2.66%
Windows 98 - 0.70%
Linux - 0.63%

Woooo! 0.63% Won't be long before there are more Linux clients than Win98!
#1.1 whocares78 on 09 Jan 2008 - 07:38
i actually thought linux woudl be higher, but i guess as you say below, they only count hits to a website, most linux boxes are servers so arent goign to be browsing the web too often, so all in all id say linux actually woudl have more than 98..
#1.2 vetmarkjensen on 09 Jan 2008 - 12:20
Well, Apple is making significant gains. Linux is still very much a minority client OS, but has gained 50% more users.

And this small trickle of users are coming at the expense of...? Yup. Microsoft. Maybe someday soon we will have a more competitive computing market than we have had the past 10 years.

That wouldn't be that much of a good thing as you may be thinking as the software would then have to be ported yet onto another system. (ex. Mac OSX)

These results seem to be calculated by browser useragent strings, which means that quite a few users (myself included) will be reported multiple times.

It also means that while XP/Vista numbers may be up due to Mac users dual-booting, Mac OS numbers will also be up a slight amount due to the increasing number of individuals who are discovering just how simple it is to install Tiger or Leopard on their non-Apple PCs. I'm fully aware this is a violation of Apple's license agreement, but that doesn't stop people from doing it!
#2.1 +vlsi0n on 09 Jan 2008 - 01:48
Installing Apples OS in order to achieve a Hackintosh box isn't easy, and a minority does it. Nothing against it though, I'd probably dual boot if it was more reliable.

It's not quite as difficult now that EFI emulation has been achieved. You can install regular (i.e. unmodified) kernels and apply system updates without any problems. Unsupported hardware is usually the only barrier, and most of the time it's for hardware that wouldn't be on a Mac anyway, such as card readers and gaming devices, etc.

So you're telling me that more people are using Win98 than Linux? I really don't believe that...
#3.1 MioTheGreat on 09 Jan 2008 - 01:40
I do.

We still have a few Win98 machines at work (Which are getting replaced/removed very very soon, but still, they're there, and they're online.)
#3.2 whocares78 on 09 Jan 2008 - 07:35
haha i do, i have seen plenty of cheap clients of mine stil on 98, hell i had one customer using 95
#3.3 riku0116 on 09 Jan 2008 - 08:27
...one of my highschool teachers used to have a win95 laptop...
we had a presentation one day. i had my powerpoint on a usb. the dam thing wouldnt recognize it...
had to do the presentation w/o visuals, lost a crapload of marks there...

and two weeks later she gets a new laptop w/ xp

i didnt think the vista numbers would be THAT low

im surprised, and yet not at the same time

They were much higher than I was expecting.
#4.2 vetneufuse on 09 Jan 2008 - 03:47
Low? just think there is over a billion computers out there... now take 10% of that... and recently MS said they sold over 100 milion licenses... seems like the numbers line up to me

Also remember this is a measurement of web hits on a sample selection of sites. It does not count any servers, where Linux is pretty strong, since servers don't often browse the web.

A good client metric, though.

Um, ok... I have nothing against Linux, but I don't think most professionals use it. I'm sure there's a wide spread of OSes pros use, even Amiga and Be still.

True, but

1) Clients vastly outnumber servers.
2) People don't actually use servers to do "stuff", so who cares what OS they have on them.
3) Linux has actually been losing ground recently.

You are right! Despair!

I'm removing Linux today to install Vista. Thanks for showing me the light.

By the end of 2008, I bet my socks that Mac OS will have more market share than Vista.

I know that is impossible, but it will happen.
#6.1 TheBigB on 09 Jan 2008 - 06:12
I second that bet. At least among consumers, Mac OS is rising rapidly. Three years ago if I even MENTIONED Apple in my school they'd call priests in to exorcise me. Now, I have four friends in school who all are getting Macs, and I'll bet my ass 50-75% of ALL students in my school have at least SOME form of Apple product.

i'll take that bet, woohoo im gettin a freee pair of socks, are they nice socks??....but seriously you are dreaming, vista has gained about 10% apple about 3% in the last year. your maths is brilliant especially considering most corporates are waitign for SP1 before they roll out vista, i know this becasue at lot of my customers are telling me this....and corporates are the ones that make the numbers big. when i rollout 30 machines later this year i doubt i will even know half as many people that changed to mac, if any...

some form of apple product doesnt mean computer OS.....hell i have an apple sticker on one of my old PC's does that count

Perhaps you could explain that? My feet are well away from my mouth grammatically as far as I can see. If you want to argue grammar, however, it should be "double-digit" and "Now's".

Is it just me, or do these numbers seem a little off? If Bill Gates is to be believed, and there actually are 100 million copies of Vista being used right now, and that 100 million corresponds to the 10% in this report, then there's about 70 million Mac users (plus the few million iPhone and iPod Touch users). But according to Apple's sales figures over the past few years, and their announcement back in '97 of having 25 million users, there should be a few million less users, maybe even a dozen less Mac users.

There's a few conclusions I can draw from this. One is that Bill Gates took the typical Microsoft approach and declared the number of units shipped as the number of units sold or in use. Another is that quite a few of those Vista users downgraded back to XP shortly after the "wow" started. Another is that some Windows users don't feel safe going online, or don't even have internet access. Or a combination of the above.

Still, if the numbers are true then Macs really are gaining market share, and Vista's a bigger flop than Microsoft wants to admit.

Vista has gone from .16% to 10.48% and Mac OS (combined) 5.67% to 7.3%. Going up 10.32 isn't a flop compared to going up 1.63, is it? (You did notice that while the Mac Intel numbers rose, the legacy numbers fell?) And that's only comparing to Vista, not all the flavors of Windows. I'm not saying their numbers are accurate, but you're reading something larger in them than there is.

Considering there were over 250 million PCs sold last year and Vista only shipped on 100 million of them, that's a bit of a shock. Apparently there's a lot of people who didn't feel the 'wow'.

When you take into account that Apple's unit shipments continue to rise about 30% YoY while the rest of the PC makers shipments only rise about 5-10% YoY, Apple's doing a lot better than the rest of the industry. Not to mention some of those copies of XP and Vista are undoubtedly running on Apple hardware. (maybe 1% or so, but still)

It is worth noting that Windows is split into versions, whilst Mac OS X is just that platform - not the version.

The worlds second most popular OS is Windows Vista. This is after a year of it being released. So much for a flop hey.

Oh, and it's worth noting that Mac OS X has gone up by 1.63% - that's a big improvement, but still not huge. Not when you take into account that they have released a new version of the OS, the Touch and the iPhone.... When MS get over 10% on it's new OS with just a software launch and Apple can only gain 1.63% when they launch devices too it makes you wonder what the fanboi's are on about.

However it has to be said, that neither MS or Apple can be screaming about success at the moment. I would have thought Vista would be around the 20% - 25% mark by now, however it has only been a year I guess. Be interesting to see what the stats are this time in 2009.

MS still has over 90% of the destkop market then. Anyone know what these stats were in the 2006 report? Has MS's overall net dominance gone down at all?

They did include both versions of OSX. There's a "Mac OS" (PPC) and "MacIntel" (Intel, of course). In the figures I quoted ^up there^ I added the two OSXs together.

Also how come its "Mac OS", and not cmpared to "Windows OS", instead they break it down into every single version of Windows.

You wouldn't have to "presume" incorrectly if you just clicked on the stinking link to view a one-page pdf file.

But, since that is too much for you, let me cut-and-paste for you.

Operating System Total Market Share
Windows XP 76.91%
Windows Vista 10.48%
MacIntel 4.02%
Mac OS 3.28%
Windows 2000 2.66%
Windows 98 0.70%
Linux 0.63%
Windows NT 0.57%
Windows ME 0.40%

#13.2 C_Guy on 09 Jan 2008 - 17:43
Plastikaa's point is still valid. While the Windows versions are all broken down there's no break down of Mac OS by cat name/service pack. You can't tell how many Leopards are out there (10.5) compared to Tigers (10.4), for example.

Talk about "Wow" factor. The Windows that everyone on Neowin seems to hate (Millennium) is still beating iPhone by over 300%.

#13.3 vetmarkjensen on 09 Jan 2008 - 18:48
The only "point" that plastikaa made is that he didn't bother to look beyond the summary.

The comparison of a consumer PC OS (WinME) to a mobile phone OS (iPhone) is absurd beyond words. Might as well compare it to the Wii or Playstation while you are at it.
#14 hewitt s. on 09 Jan 2008 - 15:51
Calm down everyone! These numbers are not an accurate representation of OS market share. These results show one thing, and one thing only -- which OS is loaded on the computer that people are using to browse the web. There are many computers in the world that people do not browse the web on (such as servers), which is precisely why Linux has such a small number here. Instead of browsing the web, many Linux computers are used to power the web! And web browsing is disabled in many workplaces, so you can't count those computers either.
