Mary Jo Foley, an online journalist often given the title of “The Microsoft Watcher”, is reporting that the software giant has released a new refresh build of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 RC (build 17128 to be more exact). Microsoft’s statement: “Today, Microsoft released the latest pre-release build of SP1 – ‘Windows Vista SP1 RC Refresh’ — to approximately 15,000 beta testers. This group includes corporate customers, consumer enthusiasts, software and hardware vendors, and others. The code is not available for public download. We are still on schedule to deliver SP1 RTM in Q1 CY08. The final release date is based on quality, so we will continue to track customer and partner feedback from the beta program before setting a final date.”

i was just thinking, since it's not available for public consumption, why even post it here? those that can get it know about it already.

then i realized, neowin just wants to inform us to look for the torrent of it. thanks for supporting illegal software downloads neowin! (joking, sort of.)

Actually I'd think it's because it's news.
I for one have been wondering whats happening with SP1 now 2008 is here, and this is a good indication of where they're at.

True, which in turn can tell us how it is progressing and whether it might be late, whether its worth the wait, incompatibilities.

Just because we can't all use it (or dont want to install a beta) doesn't mean we aren't interested to hear that progress is being made. I'm certainly awaiting SP1 and want to know that thing's are going well with it but at the same time I have no intention of installing it on my own PC until it hit's final.

Actually, they don't normally tell us testers right away when it comes out, they wait a day or two. This was the first I'd heard about it, so I just went to grab it.

ya first I heard of it, downloading now. Shame it takes so damn long to uninstall the previous version

I do hope this RTM's the same time 2008 does, I want to do a fresh install on my laptop.

yeah...no reason to be active in the beta newsgroup...just come here for updates and progress.

nah I think he's being sarcastic because I said I didn't yet know about it.
I do keep an eye on the newsgroups but probably not as much as I should. I was very active in them during the initial vista program and I do still make a point to file any bugs I find.

Normally that kind of user just grab the builds of a Windows OS leaked or released onto websites or elsewhere too.

That's the official launch date I think. 2008 and Vista SP1 will RTM before then.

Will the final version slipstream into Vista so I can do a clean install? (Like you can with XP) I heard somewhere that it can't and another place it can.

Actually, I'm more interested in getting the update over the online updates rather than dealing with reinstalling again.

Even with Windows Update, you have to uninstall the old build of SP1 to get the new build.

Those links are for the existing release and are not the refresh. Unless you like reinstalling the same version of Vista SP1 for some reason, skip those links.

Took me about an hour to install, after the install i lost audio driver support, reinstalled audio driver works but when i restart audio drivers go back to not working making me reinstall again....anyways cant wait til the final comes out, with the last build i my daemon tools also did not work, havent tested it with this build though..
