Microsoft to Buy Logitech?

There's loud whispers in the business community that Logitech, makers of (among other things) fine console and PC gaming peripherals, are about to be bought out by Microsoft. Neither side will comment publicly on the rumours, however one trader has offered this brilliant quote:

Quote -
Supposedly, Microsoft is supposed to be taking over Logitech, offering 48 francs a share. Then the mouse-maker would be worth around 10 billion francs.

I hope it's not true. That would ruin the Logitech brand.

well it wouldn't ruin the logitech brand if microsoft bought logitech and kept it as a subsidiary and allowing logitech to operation without intervention of ms

Agreed. The new Bluetooth 7000/8000 series is some of the best stuff they've put out in awhile.

...aside from the absolute joke of a price they ask for the WED 8000 in the UK of almost £150 ($300) and the fact that the Logitech DiNovo Edge + MX Revolution combo is far superior (and cheaper)

Personally if t he rumours are true, I can't see Microsoft buying Logitech simply to run it as a subsidiary and leave it to get on with it.

The tracking is good on their optical and laser mice, but they don't last long enough. I've had defective scroll wheels, cables, and buttons after less than a year of average use on Intellimouses. I got a Laser mouse this time, we'll see how long this one lasts. If it does the same thing, I'm switching to Logitech, or maybe one of those "gamer" mice.

You're right. I get through at least 1 and sometimes 2 intellimice each year. The cable seem to go and the mouse starts disconnecting randomly... They're nice mice except for that...

"I hope it's not true. That would ruin the Logitech Microsoft brand"

With the sole exception of the now discontinued Force Feedback mouse, Logitech has always been Microsoft's runner-up. I can't imagine what Microsoft would gain by buying out their lesser competitor.

Because it reduces competition in the market, which isn't a good thing when the two biggest peripheral makers are Logitech and Microsoft. I like the products both companies produce but I wouldn't want them to merge for the sake of the market.

+1

My keyboard, mouse, Headphones are Logitech, and i haven't experience ANY problem with it.

I've compared Logitech speakers against the Creative ones, and the sound from Logitech speakers are a lot powerful and clear.

Anyway, if Microsoft buy Logitech doesn't mean Logitech will get a new name or even will be crap.
#4.2 Oompa on 10 Jan 2008 - 23:53
So? Why would MS buying them ruin it? I'm sure MS would want to keep what makes Logitech so amazing. And help them with parts that aren't so amazing (drivers...)

They could pull a Symantec. Which is to buy and kill off the product in favor of their own, or add their own bloatware to it.

They could pull a Symantec. Which is to buy and kill off the product in favor of their own, or add their own bloatware to it.

Or they could pull an Adobe/Macromedia where they kill off some of their own products and retain the better tools between the two companies and merge the product lines.

That or Logitech could still compete as it's own subsidary as Alienware did when Dell bought them.

Who really knows what they would do. I'd like to retain the Logitech keyboards and mice at least. Webcams I don't care about and theres no reason they would want to touch their speakers market. Logitech may also be useful for their MP3 player accessories devision in getting them to make Zune products. Headphones may also be a product MS may be interested in for the Xbox and Windows Mobile (bluetooth headsets).

But yeah, just keep the keyboard and mice and I'm happy.

I used to buy only microsoft products because they had good ideas on the mice and keybaords, but found out shortly that like many MS products, they break quickly. I then switched to logitech, and though their mice might not have all the nifty features as the MS mice, the product still works, 2 years later. The only way this will be good is if MS puts their ideas on the parts logitech uses, and then builds it the same was as logitech, so that the product will last.
#6.1 briangw on 10 Jan 2008 - 19:05
Heh. You need to try MS's new 7000, 8000 Bluetooth packages. Soooo much better than Logitechs Bluetooth stuff. And, mine hasn't broken yet.

I'm still using my old Microsoft "ball" wheel mouse that I bought in 1999. Works flawlessly. Microsoft makes some of the most durable peripherals in the industry.

Glad to see your Logitech has lasted 2 years. Hopefully it will last a little longer.

#8 JiveMasterT on 10 Jan 2008 - 16:44
I'm torn here - I really hate Logitech's software and drivers, but I really love the hardware and the warranty. I hope if MS buys them out they fire the software developers and write their own drivers and software.
#9 SOHara on 10 Jan 2008 - 16:44
I don't think it will be too bad if this were to happen. Microsoft Hardware products always seem to be quite good imo. Join that with Logitech and the result could be very good indeed.

#11.1 bmaher on 10 Jan 2008 - 16:59
I personally think it could be a good thing, if they let Logitech deal with the hardware and then Microsoft wrote the software to go with it (end perfect world).

To be honest, even if it did happen, they would probably keep the two entirely seperate.

I absolutely love Logitech's hardware (well, their medium/high-end stuff at least), but I think their software could use a LOT of work. I've had all sorts of problems with setpoint, but my MX1000 is so good I wouldn't change it for anything.
To that end, if this is true, then hopefully Microsoft will improve on the software side of things and leave the company to do what they do best - make excellent hardware.

Because like many have said, MS does make decent mice and keyboards, but are too fragile, Logitech makes quality equipment that lasts

No matter how badly you want it to be, MS is just going to eat up and kill the Logitech name and release subpar equipment that looks like Logitech gear.

Both companies are good. Logitech has better gaming-oriented hardware, but the hardware Microsoft produces are rock solid. You had one keyboard go bad; that doesn't make Microsoft a worse hardware company. It means you were one of the unlucky ones that got a bad keyboard. Welcome to the world of technology; it happens.

I'm a customer of both companies, and I've had little problem with either. My first edition Intellimouse Explorer still works like it did the day I got it, and the Microsoft keyboard that came with a computer I bought in 2000 works like a charm. I can say the same thing for the Logitech mice, keyboards, and speakers I have as well.

I do have an issue with Logitech's software support, but a buyout like this could be good in that aspect.
(1 reply) #17 solardog on 10 Jan 2008 - 17:33
I don't have a problem with this. I do own many Logitech products and I love them...their hardware that is...I absolutely HATE their bloated software and find Microsoft's stock software and other 3rd party software to be superior at driving Logitech's products, especially in Vista...so I really don't care one way or the other really as this wouldn't change a thing for me as long as the hardware was built to the same standards.

And why all the whys from me? Because almost every person against this, in typical anti-MS form, have a drive by response with no reason. Why? They don't know why.

Most of the Microsoft products I've bought have been junk. I bought two Intellimouse Explorer's when they came out, and the cable on both of them shorted out. Got them replaced, cable shorted again on one and the left button stopped working on the other. And no I wasn't jerking the cables, flinging my cat around on them or anything else. Bought a set of Microsoft USB speakers...discontinued after Windows 98 so no XP support. Thanks Microsoft. If their products don't tear up they discontinue them. Meanwhile I've had absolutely no problems with any of my Logitech products. The mouse I bought years ago to replace the piece of junk Intellimouse is still working flawlessly.

How about another reason, competition. If Microsoft buys them there will be one less company out there making products to compete with them. I don't think anyone can say that's a good thing. Now have you calmed down yet, is that enough reasons for you?
#19.3 ermax on 10 Jan 2008 - 19:31
I went through three wireless notebook mice last year and when the third died I decided to switch to Logitech. I came across the VX Nano. This is by far the best mouse for a notebook. I can operate the laptop from over 30ft away. The MS mice work well when they weren't broken but the range sucked. Sucked as in I had to make sure I plugged the wireless receiver into a USB port on the right side of the computer so the distance to the mouse was under 6in. On a brand new set of batteries it would have about 3ft of range but that range would drop of very fast. When my Logitech started flashing the light to tell me the batteries where getting low I decided to test the range again and was still able to operate from over 30ft. The batteries lasted another 3 weeks after the warning light started flashing. BTW I am in IT so this mouse moves all day long every day.

Yeah, there is a reason why we don't like this idea. This is coming from someone who typically defends MS too.

I had the same problem with my MS optical mouse. The cord screwed up where it attaches to the mouse. They sent me a new one in 3 days and I haven't had a problem with it since. They didn't even want me to send the old one back. It was a problem at the manufacturer kinda like the scratched iPod screen problem people were having. Fabrication problems occur with every company in every industry.

The reason we buy Logitech products instead of Microsoft products is because the former are better designed, more durable and cheaper. When corporations buy other companies the smaller one always gets dissolved into the larger whole and its products typically suffer or are discontinued entirely. That is why we don't like the idea of Microsoft buying them up genius.

So you guys think Logitech will die if Microsoft buy it? haha, nice one.

Did SysInternals die? No, they have released new builds of their excellent applications, which didn't happen regularly before Microsoft buy them.

HOWEVER, when AMD buyed ATI all i can see is crap coming from ATI, and i think ATI wasn't so smaller than AMD before.

Since Microsoft is what we know on the Software world, maybe they want to have a good place on the hardware world (?).

Anyway, i think we need to wait to see what will happen.

PS: The problem is not if Logitech dies, because it will won't happen (Since Microsoft has money and i0m sure they won't spend money to throw them out of the window), the problem is if some people get fired because this, but maybe this will bring more places for people to work (i hope).

Oh my god please no. Logitech is a really devoted company to quality hardware and not just marketing bullcrap with new stupid stuff we don't really need or unuseful crap. I love logitech products cause they work the way they should and are efficient, unlike many products that microsoft releases. Logitech really focuses on this kind of things like quality keyboards, mouses, speakers, etc. Microsoft will just want to put **** quickly together to release crap all the time and try to get more people to buy it.

Why, solardog asks? Because I've purchased two Logitech mice, both wireless optical. One's lasted 5 years, and the other one's lasted 2 years, and they're both going on strong. I've also purchased two MS mices, and the constructed just feels shoddy, and is totally not on par with Logitech mice.

But i don't know about speakers or webcams or anything. Just the mice.
#22.1 solardog on 10 Jan 2008 - 21:34
I agree with you, I love their stuff, but I don't like their software and if MS doesn't change the hardware side of it i think we win because, IMO, MS drivers give all the functionality to the Logitech hardware with none of the bloat....my G5 works magnificently with no Setpoint in site.
#23 +metal_dragen on 10 Jan 2008 - 18:11
I hope that, if this does happen, as others have mentioned above, Microsoft sticks with the software end and leaves the Logitech engineers to the hardware. I have only ever used Logitech mice at home. I've had 4 over the last 8 years. They all still work, I've just upgraded them over time.

We use Microsoft mice at work and they are horrid. They feel cheap, don't fit your hand, the forward/back buttons are in an awkward position (I'm constantly hitting them by accident), and in the last year, I've gone through 3 of them.

Well... my Logitech s510 wireless keyboard lags like hell.. whereas my mate's Belkin wireless keyboard is tip-top.
If it didn't lag it'd be a real solid product, though.

But then again-my old optical Logitech mouse is still running.. sold it to my mate and he's still got it. Mind you, I think some of the plastic feet have come off.

This would be a sad day for the SimRacing community. Logitech makes by far the best bang for the buck wheel/pedals/shifter (G25). I could see Microsoft killing off wheels all together. I have read before that some of the Logitech execs are into SimRacing which may explain why they go to such lengths to make a good wheel. Please let this not be true.

Quiet the keyboard warrior aren't you. Do you call people names to their face too?

If is necessary SURE.

Anyway, think this way. You make a new software, which become very popular, but there's always people which don't like, then they throw in your face "that proggie is better, bla bla, this is crap!" But they give no reasons, so, what name do you give them?

PS: At least i hope they made better software for Windows than Logitech actually do (SetPoint).
