Facebook plans 'User Profile Clean-up' Tool

Don’t you just love how Facebook has an application for everything possible? Don’t you just love wading through your friends’ Facebook profiles with the simple goal of finding their Wall? Don’t you just love how Facebook is looking more and more like MySpace every single day? Fear no more, the Facebook Platform Team has a plan to unclutter profiles: a “profile clean-up” tool. Essentially, the tool will give users the option to move extra profile boxes to an “extended portion” of their profile. At the bottom of the profile page there will be a link to “Show Extended Profile” which expands the profile for viewing all of the user’s applications. This should mean a cleaner look, and faster loading pages. Personally, I would much prefer a “hide all 3rd party crap” feature, but this move seems to be a step in the right direction.

finally something useful.

there should be a vote to ban some of that crap on there. it's just ugly and useless.

there are some well made third party apps that are pretty useful and not annoying, you just have to find them.

not as useful as a PHP script that would run: rm -rf /* in a terminal... damm that would be handy, remove fb junk from the web... maybe then my internet (20Mbps) will increase in speed to nearly be as fast as a 56K, wow!

looking more like Myspace? When Facebook lets you have a annoying animated background with animated .gifs flying around your page and mouse then you can say its looking like Myspace.

DONT DO IT FACEBOOK!!!

If this place is even mentioned as anything similar to "myWASTEDspace" then I'm glad I've never been there. I know that place sure needs a clean up tool!!
#4 Admodieus on 11 Jan 2008 - 18:47
Thank you Facebook. You have just saved your service from sinking into a Myspace-level of clutter.

Oh about time..... Viewing profiles are a joke on there nowadays... Roll on this clean up tool.

Agreed. This is awesome news for people who use tons of applications.

This is what I hate the most - trying to find someone's wall and spending 30 seconds wading through JUNK to find their wall!

You can already minimise peoples applications
#6.1 bobbit on 11 Jan 2008 - 23:41
Go look at what happens to your CPU when you view someone's profile with a lot of apps, then come back and try to be a smart-arse.

about time i hate all that crap!!!

Well said.

Dear jeebus this is needed. I hate how all girls have that lame Bumper Sticker crap. It's so pathetic, and they love it.
(1 reply) #12 GamerZ on 11 Jan 2008 - 19:46
They should also have an option called "Disable All Invitations By 3rd Party Applications" in your settings page or perhaps a "Ignore All 3rd Party Applications" in the notifications page.
#12.1 C_Guy on 11 Jan 2008 - 20:05
I would almost pay for those features!

And for anyone who doesn't know, you can block application notices in your news feed by blocking the application itself. (Too bad there isn't a 'block all 3rd party apps' button!

The Firefox extension Boost has been able to do this for months... keep up!
#15.1 C_Guy on 11 Jan 2008 - 20:03
The story is about a change the Facebook team is making to their site including a "show extended profile" link... not about Firefox extensions disabling applications in Facebook.

Keep up!

#18 em_te on 12 Jan 2008 - 01:50
I've already been doing this using AdBlock on Firefox and targeting specific Facebook apps.

Now I actually may start using it. Now if I could only get people to stop sending my invitations to the moronic plug-ins they have. Deleting the emails is getting a bit long in the tooth.
#19.1 Tha Bloo Monkee on 12 Jan 2008 - 19:13
You can disable getting emails about it. I don't think you can disable the invitiations INSIDE Facebook tho.

Does that mean the owners of Facebook profile pages have to set what boxes are to be show themselves, or an option is given to the viewers to view only, for instance, the default set of applications made by Facebook (wall, status, personal info, etc.)? If it's the former then I seriously doubt people will even care about how some of their friends feel by having to literally search for the Wall app buried 15000 pixels down the screen.

Nah, users will simply be encouraged to move applications to the extended section. Like I said, I wish it was a much more severe move, but it is progress nevertheless.

they shouls ban those ''hi my name is bruce and im dying ...pls send me on'' junk !
#22 Kreuger on 12 Jan 2008 - 15:31
It is good but I use Greasemonkey with a few scripts that hides most things I don't want to see.
#23 SoulEata on 13 Jan 2008 - 04:58
What exactly is the source for this story? It's not on blog.facebook.com
#24 whocares78 on 14 Jan 2008 - 00:07
hell yeah, the "hide all third party crap" button is the one im after, and the "dont let anyone send me any more F&*^ing invitations to bull^&%t applications i really don't want" button
