With the release of the Penryn-based Mac Pros only two weeks ago, Apple introduced a new video card option for the Mac Pros -- the NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT. Existing Mac Pro owners saw this is an opportunity to upgrade from current cards as well as ailing 1900XT cards.
Despite an upgrade-kit becoming available on the Apple Store, Apple quickly contacted those who ordered the video cards to clarify that the 8800GT would only work on the most recently released Penryn Mac Pros. This led one user to jot off an angry letter to Steve Jobs who reportedly responded:
"I suggest you calm down. Everyone knows the issue and it is being worked."

Today, a statement from NVIDIA's Director of PR confirmed that a fix was on the way:
the company is "in the middle of bringing out an upgrade kit based on the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT solution for all Intel-based Mac Pros." What's more, this upgrade kit "should be out in a few weeks."

I do. I bought a new video card, put it in my computer, and installed drivers for it a month ago. Or did you not notice the rolling eyes? It was sarcasm.
Why should you need an 'upgrade kit' for a Mac just to install a PCI Express video card?

Maybe the mac pro's are hard to open
and no i didn't notice the rolling eye sorry
Not really on a mac... When OSX came out with quartz? i think it was... they had special firmwares for the graphics cards to work right with it... I don't know if this is still an issue? but thats how it worked for a while at least... couldn't just plop in any old card back then...
anyways... "I suggest you calm down"? talk about someone sounding like a pompus ass to their customers... bad way to phrase it... Could of easily just said "We know there is an issue, and we are working on it"

I thought that Jobs' comment was a bit condescending myself, but I thought the fact that you have to modify an industry standard card to use it in an industry standard slot was more amusing.
EDIT: Here is a link to the letter that whizzed in Steve's Corn Flakes: http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p...79&postcount=21
@Chokes: I didn't mean that to sound harsh.

They are easy to open, don't even need a screwdriver if I recall correctly.
Who knows, the "kit" probably just has the video card and some screws, with specific instructions for a Mac Pro.

If nVidia is saying they're working on it too then it must be 'special' firmware. Everything Apple is special.

Do you know what a BIOS upgrade is?
It's Apple their Mac "PC's" are far superior to PC's...

Yup, especially when it comes to playing games.
Its a firmware problem and it is being resolved. Didn't you even RTFA? I don't understand how PC users can be so high and mighty. I've lost count of the amount of discussions I read about concerning motherboard incompatabilities with cerain graphics cards, chipset combinations, etc. Admittedly they're nowhere near as bad as they used to be when compared with a few years ago - I know, I was there on the 'bleeding edge' and unable to play so many games because of driver incompatabilities, BIOS glitches and so forth with high spec home computers.
What are they supposed to do? Microsoft (rather cleverly) annhilated OpenGL to put into place a graphics runtime which only worked on their platform. If games makers only code games in DirectX, how is that Apple's failing?
Really guys. I'm all for championing your "platform of choice" but when you just spout out crapola like this its embarassing to read and part of the reason why Neowin gets such a bad reputation.

Really? I have OpenGL on my machine. Works just fine. So Apple was naughty for using Quartz Extreme in favor of OpenGL, too?

I think you are misinterpreting the point of my post. Believe me, I like OpenGL. I'd prefer an open standard that meant games could be used on ANY platform. The point i'm making is that Microsoft have managed to make DirectX a hugely popular gaming platform, and in the process pretty much consigned PC gaming to the Windows desktop.
It hurts me a lot, frankly!

There are some excellent games that run under Cider on the Mac and use DirectX. Have you looked at Myst Online?
Can't say that I have to be honest! I'd quite like to try Cider out but unfortunately my Mac (Mac Mini) isn't really up to gaming - so until I decide to commit to a higher end Mac with much better graphics, i'm running two machines - a nice fast dual core Athlon for gaming and general Windows stuff, and a Mac for other things!
I was sort of hoping Apple might release a new Mac at Macworld - a baby brother to the Mac Pro with less bleeding edge Intel processors and decent graphics cards.. I keep hoping it'll happen sometime as I don't really like the graphics cards built into the iMac's, nor the lack of upgradability.

I was hoping they would announce an 'enthusiast' model that was like the Pro series but lower cost and more user-expandable. I guess there's always next year.

Did you even RMFQ a couple up that said Apple uses custom firmwares? gawd... I was making a joke that Apple being a PC is still a PC but they try to make it different even though its not..

I'm sorry but Apple took something that worked fine and broke it. There's no two ways about it. The 8800GT works perfectly on PCIe 1.x motherboards for PC and yet with Apple it doesn't.
What are they supposed to do? Well, how about developing their own competing platform? Microsoft built DX up over years to get where they are today... it didn't just happen. Yet Apple still has its head in the sand. Instead the best they can come up with is allowing Macs to run Windows, though with their custom firmware crap they limit the choice and introduce stupid issues like this one.
No, it's YOU that is the embarassment here. We're criticising Apple for messing up, not just for the sake of it. All I here are weak excuses to justify Apple's illogical positioning. And yes, I'm perfectly happy to criticise Microsoft too for all the mistakes they've made with Vista!
People pay a premium price for a Mac. Why wouldn't they have a premium motherboard that supports what low end PC motherboards support from the get-go?

Maybe i miss something but Motherboards with EFI are not been out yet....
MSI is working on it but the product isn't finished yet....

My Intel 965LT has EFI. It's not end-user exposed right now, but they've already started adding utilities to the firmware like a system recovery tool. (It's like Ghost built into the BIOS.)
I don't see the need to. Certainly if you can post that, you can use Google and find it yourself.

I take it you can't figure out how to use Google? Both ECS and MSI have EFI motherboards. Both of them are designed to work with existing hardware. 1 + 1 = ?

Have you any links to people who have NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT on a EFI PC?

I am looking at a PC running UEFI and a 8800GTX so whats your point? works fine here.... yes UEFI... its a demo board for IHV's.... This is a Mac problem and has nothing to do with EFI/UEFI or nVIDIA.... And this is running on Windows Vista x64 SP1 RC right now with no BIOS compatability layer loaded... so it obviously works in Windows Vista x64 at least...

I am not surprised you are sticking up after your flame bait news story last week, but the fact standa, he made a statement pulled out of his behind, he had no facts or evidence to back up that this card was easy to install under EFI PCs then it was for Mac EFI computers that had no drivers written for it, continue in your current bash form, which I find distaste for a admin, who should above all be neutral on here and not let his personal bias get in the way, but thay is just me who sees how someone who is supposed to be in charge conducts themselves.
Flame bair news story? huh? what the heck are you talking about? Second of all what in the world are you talking about? You are trying to say I am on a side? I'd love to know where you got that from since I use PC's and Mac's all day, like things about both and hate things about both... and what "current bash form" are you talking about? What bashing? I am just saying that it works on a test board with UEFI on it? whats so bashing about that?
Why is it that people like to cause trouble even when no exist, why just feck off out of it? and do something better to pass your time with then casue trouble?
Most of you this news story doesn't even concern you so why bother?
Just even if it gets me banned, because you're trouble causing tosspots and no other reason.
This place in the last few months has gone way done, it looks to promote trouble and discord, they are happy to let this state of arrairs to exist, trolling can take many forms

Has it ever occurred to you that the problem lies with the way you're perceiving things, not everyone else? Every time someone does give you a fact, links, or whatever you act like we just told you Oz exists and Dorothy is on the way to pick you up.

you made several facts, you've posted the most in here

Are you stalking me or something? Do you really think I'm the only person that comments on Mac stories?
You're misinformed. I
don'tdo hate Macs. I think OSX is pretty cool. I hate Apple and their overpriced hardware. As I said before, if you don't like Neowin users in general posting comments in Apple articles, you should probably find somewhere else to read your Mac news. You really don't advance your argument at all. Why do you even care what I think?EDIT: Fixed for evo_spook's benefit...

I wouldn't buy the AIr, I'd get a Sony Before that.
Never said anything about Vista cause never used it, said I have XP but prefer OSX, I've dissed Leopard, if you have a Mac,, stick with Tiger, Leopard is still too unstable. Not a games player
I not slagged off any Windows OS in here, I've said I don't agree with what Apple is don't with Touch updates or with iphone prices or hardware, so I'm not a Apple Zealot, but I'm not, never have being, prepared to sit by while people are allowed to talk trash with no come back.
