A Turkish court has again blocked access to the popular video-sharing Web site YouTube because of clips allegedly insulting the country's founding father; the first ban was also due to clips deemed disrespectful to Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, a war hero who founded Turkey from the ruins of the Ottoman Empire. It is illegal in Turkey to insult the revered figure, whose portrait still hangs in almost all government offices nearly 70 years after his death. Users trying to access the Web site from Turkey were met with notices in English and Turkish saying it was banned under an Ankara court order issued January 17.
Last March, another court blocked access to YouTube. The ban was lifted two days later after YouTube removed the offending videos. In September, a court in the eastern city of Sivas ordered a ban after saying videos on the site insulted Ataturk, President Abdullah Gul, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the army, but the ban was never implemented. The current ban will probably also be lifted once Google, the owner of YouTube, removes the “insulting” videos.

Why should YouTube even consider removing that video? The law sounds like it dates back from the early 1500's the way it's worded. Freedom of speech is way more important, and this law has been used in Turkey multiple times to put people on trial for writing anything bad about the government or Turkey's history.

Very well put. I've given up on putting forwards questions like these towards the ignorant, it gets too frustrating. Not only that, the blame is also on TV/News, they seem to have an agenda or take sides when it comes to reporting a story. They emphasise on the facts that support their argument..

Turkish lawyers tried to contact with Youtube about these videos but website management did not do anything. Maybe banning Youtube is not suitable but government has to apply some precautions according to laws. We can watch youtube videos by changing dns options.

Actually, yes. Pretty simple logic. If you sound like a five year old writing an essay on politics you don't understand, people tend to treat you as such.
If you're such the buff, you should understand that freedom of speech to the people you're talking to means what they're saying it means. In which case, you're wrong to bring their version of it down in favor of your own, because you're just acting like the people you hate so much for insulting your version.

The EU is naff anyway. Most of the countries like Spain, France and Germany never do as they're asked to do as a point of law.

They are NOT part of Europe. If you let them in you let them in, you might as well let any contiguous country join: China, Russia, North Korea, South Africa. You have to draw a line somewhere, and the border with Turkey looks like a good place to start, from both a cultural and a geographical standpoint.

This has nothing to do with that. Censorship is not a form of defense other than a defense a government employs to protect itself from its own people, and an attempt at controlling the people. Censorship is also not a protection from terrorism, it will just make the society unaware of it. Also, you can respect your country and history even if giving your people democratic freedoms. Heck, where I live, censorship would be disrespectful of what our past leaders have tried to give us. I also don't live in the USA, but in Sweden, so please don't drag the USA into this -- this has to do with politics, not specific countries.
In my opinion, censorship is not a sign of governmental strength in defending a society's history and ideal, it's to the contrary a sign of weakness in attempting to do so, or as Potter Stewart said: "Censorship reflects society's lack of confidence in itself."

75 percent of the Turkish people don't want to join eu.
there were some people sheared very bad videos, we warned youtube, but they didn't delete them. videos were about Atatürk. do you know anything about Atatürk. he is the best leader of 20 th century. his mind is still alive in 21th century. please search about him and get ideas. we must protect him, you must understand us. but i think this desicion, which is blocking youtube, is heavy a bit.
in germany, turkish people can't speak turkish. but in turkish republic, there are many ethnic group speaking their language between them (laz,kürt, greek, armenian), but they aren't minority because everyone have same rights.
there is a kurdish political party in our assembly, they have a connection with terorist pkk, but they can speak freely in the assembly.

Cencorship is not the way we are fond but there is no solution applied to this matter by Youtube. We demanded the website administration to delete those videos nevertheless the response we had was nothing. You have your own problems with yourself... It is your way to show Turkey as a poor, ugly country but what you deflect on TVs and newspapers is your own poorness and ugliness. When there is one news on TV about Turkey, we are used to see poor people on the streets wearing black headscarfs. Believe, I am 20 and never seen one of them in my life... But for a person who have watched it on TV can easily belive it is a freaking poor Arabian country. That's enough for both me and us, Turks. Just check your selfishness and how of you being calumniatory. Morever, calling a terrorist group PKK as Kurdish "rebels" on your news explains us what kind of people we are facing up and down. Calling a group of people as rebels who killed more than 10000 innocent babies shows us the democracy game you play in Europe.

The answer is simple.
It was Ataturk himself who stopped the cabinet from banning a book that critisied Ataturk, and when he was still alive, the book was translated into Turkish and published in Turkey.
It was the many other cabinets and the military governments themselves who made the law that bans insulting Ataturk.
And for the EU membership... Turkey will never be accepted for it, and not because of some ancients laws, but because of the muslim population.
And by the time it could ever be accepted, it will be most probably Turkey itself that will refuse to join as no one would want to participate a union that is destined to collapse.
