Yahoo is planning to lay off hundreds of employees in an effort to increase its profitability, prop up its deflated stock price and narrow the focus of its sprawling Internet portal to a smaller number of key areas, people close to the company said Monday. The final number of people to be laid off from Yahoo’s work force of about 14,000 is yet to be determined and is likely to be announced around the end of the month, perhaps during Yahoo’s Jan. 29 conference call with analysts after it reports fourth-quarter financial results, these people said.
Company executives are still trying to determine exactly which areas will be cut. One person close to the discussions said a final plan, or perhaps a few alternative plans, would be submitted to the company’s board at a coming meeting. The plan’s final shape may be influenced by the company’s fourth-quarter financial performance, this person said. Yahoo declined to comment specifically on any plan for layoffs. In an e-mail statement, a company spokeswoman, Diana Wong, said: “Yahoo plans to invest in some areas, reduce emphasis in others, and eliminate some areas of the business that don’t support the company’s priorities. Yahoo continues to attract and hire talent against the company’s key initiatives to create long-term stockholder value.”

The main criticism of Google, is just how many sites have tentacles reporting back to them. Install Privoxy or the like, and see how much gets relayed. That is my main Google objection. (They didn't get rich so quick, just because they were lucky!
Bummer for the people at Yahoo. If they'd simply quit playing with stuff on their site, would be an improvement. Seems like the layout is changing daily and I run into times, where it is hard to access the mail.
maybe something like 'Chinese communism'? and 'privacy violations'?...and is the executives having 3 yachts instead of 1 a profit loss and higher priority.
Why do lay people off ... an say it's for "increase its profitability"
They need to stop giving the top guys ALL that $$$$$$$ ...
and make them think first before doing layoffs ...
They should be thinking of ways of using their employees to make money
for the company, not laying them off.
Bud, that's the American way, the people at the top of the tree get the money... When the New World Order is finally in place, well all be working for minimum wage, with the few rich choosing who is allowed to join the rich club. The world is going Communist

That's an oligarchy, not communism.
Do you think all people are equal under communism? Call it waht you like, we are heading for a world where there will be two types of people
1) A very few who own almost everything
2) Low wage employees who work for the above
George Orwell timing was 30 years out, that is all!
