ATI, graphics product group of Advanced Micro Devices, reportedly aims to release its next-generation code-named R700-series graphics processing units (GPUs) in mid-2008. The news comes as a surprise, as earlier it was revealed that the ATI R700-series chips are only due either in late 2008 or early in 2009.

According to a news-story by Chinese news-paper Commercial Times (which article was partly translated by DigiTimes web-site), AMD’s code-named ATI RV770 GPU is due to be commercially released in late Q2 2008. Two of such chips are projected to power AMD’s new high-performance ATI R700 graphics card.

whatever that cost less that a wii will be glad. But currently newest models will cost even more that a whole ps3 console.

I will believe it when I see it available for actual purchase. Given the recent track record it will be delayed then launched higher than a "paper" airplane.

I am happy with my 8800GT at the moment but I would love to see ATi make a comeback and offer some decent competition. However, they need to drop the terrible Catalyst Control Center before I consider them again - it is one of the worst pieces of software I've had the misfortune to use.

What on earth do you do with the control panel? I've installed it configured the card the way I need first day I got the card and never accessed it since.. What do you do exactly with it?!

Well it crashes less than my nVidia control panel has for the past year

Nice. I hope they can melt an 8800 Ultra. Then I'll get a Ge Force 9800.
