The online advertising market will face increased opposition in 2008, according to a report from Deloitte. Users will treat web ads with growing antipathy throughout the year, while tracking technologies will attract the attention of industry watchdogs, predicts the consultancy's annual report.

Advertisers will have to make a strong case to win over the public, said Deloitte head of technology, media and telecoms Jolyon Barker. "The sector should communicate the quid pro quo of internet ads for end-users, for example in the form of free content," he said

Too right!
For those in the know, download Privoxy (freeware) install it on your PC (it acts as a Proxy server), configure your chosen web browser with proxy settings: localhost : port 8118 : and you're away. Look at the logs, and see all the Google and double click "crunches".

To revert to normal browsing, just disable the browser proxy settings. Privoxy uninstall just fine, if you don't like it!

I just tried Privoxy. For about thirty seconds! What a joke!
You should be ashamed of yourself for recommending that piece of useless trash!

I wonder what you were expecting, it's just a service, and writes to a log file. You need to invest a few minutes on the readme file. 30 seconds Jeez! That's why I said "for those in the know", sorry if it did not live up to your GNU expectations.

A non-intrusive ads will not hurt nobody but 56k internet users (still exists?).

People will disagreed with those "popup", floating windows, unrelated pron and such.

yep, still plenty of 56kers. Many want to upgrade but cant cus high speed isn't offered in their areas.... 40% of my friends at home, and at my parents house can only get dialup, and we only live 40 minutes from toronto.

How can anyone call an advert non intrusive! It's the monitoring and statistic reporting also that I object to, still some people may not care about privacy.

Not necessarily true. Sometimes the site loading can halt if some ad refuses to download, thus taking longer to load the website than it would take without ads.

Still, I've got nothing against banner ads. I never click them because they're not aimed at me but it's helluva lot better than popup ads. The worst ads I've seen are the fullscreen "click to continue to the article/image/whatever" type as seen on Gamespot (I think?) and some other services. Talk about intrusive!

Ad block plus anyone?

Those cheesy ads with the 50 state abbrevs are quite annoying. Ban crap like that and that may help.

How, exactly, do you "win over" the public? That is, how do you convince people that it's in their best interest accept tons of useless, mind-numbing crap that they don't want or need?

I can hardly wait.

I block ads on sites that annoy me. I particularly hate those rollover hyperlink-esque ones that are actually ads and pop up all sorts of windows (neowin is full of them).
I usually work it like this - if a site has ads, that's fine, but if it has any annoying, obtrusive or LOUD ads (that pretty much means ANY flash ads with sound), then I block ALL of the ads on that site.

I hate those IntelliTXT ads too... They detract from the usability of the site.

Gee, who could have seen this coming?

I hate the flash ads that contain streaming video that plays by default and use nearly 100% CPU.
