A new NPD Group report shows that stand-alone Blu-ray player sales benefited greatly from the recent announcement that Warner would be going Blu-ray exclusive. The first week of January, before Warner made their announcement, there was a nearly 50-50 split between Blu-ray and HD DVD standalone players. The following week, after the announcement, Blu-ray players grabbed 93% of the market.

On the whole, December sales data showed that Blu-ray players held 60% of the standalone market, despite much cheaper players from the HD DVD camp. Looking at only the first two weeks of January, Blu-ray already has a nearly 70% market share which is sure to increase as the month continues and consumers continue to chose Blu-ray over its rival format.

Might be a little premature to call, but apparently we're going to be looking back at HD DVD with the same fondness as we do with Betamax.
#4 +kraized on 23 Jan 2008 - 14:26
Ahh, Betamax. Ahh, HD DVD.

I'd wait another week, obviously the week just after the announcement was going to be like this. A few months ago I would have thought if the news had so much impact, it was because the people that were buying knew the news, which means they weren't average-dont-know-a-thing folks. But the warner thing was all-over-the-place, so sure the news hit everyone, average joe included.

So... let hd-dvd die already
What surprises me the most is that BD standalones had the lead before warner's announcement, in spite of Toshiba's cheaper prices. Even if it was a very small lead, that DOES say something. If at $300+ vs $199+ (pre-warner), people buy comparable amounts of both formats, clearly something is wrong with HD-DVD, lol. That means that they perceive a higher value on the blu side, and if blu were more reasonably priced (ie: equally priced), blu would totally crush hd-dvd.

Yes, but the Universal / Paramount announcement didn't produce a rush towards HD-DVD. I imagine sales for Blu-ray will drop a bit but remain consistently higher than HD-DVD. This is a very impressive statement considering that HD-DVD players are a lot cheaper - it suggests that consumers have very little confidence in the format.

Makes me soooo glad I made the switch from HDDVD to Bluray, even though IMO, having owned both, HDDVD is the superior format.

Prices on ebay have plummeted, glad I got in there with the sale just in time

please sign this. HD-DVD petition from http://www.petitiononline.com/SAVEHDD/

thank you.
#8.1 theyarecomingforyou on 23 Jan 2008 - 23:27
No thanks. A format war simply delays adoption and fragments the market, creating confusion amongst consumers. There is also no point having two formats for the same function. We survived with DVD as the sole format for movies and I don't see the problem with Blu-ray doing the same for hi-def.

If HD-DVD can't lead with significantly cheaper hardware, cheaper disc manufacturing and two exclusive studios then there's not really much point trying to save it.
#8.2 lnxpro on 24 Jan 2008 - 00:42
they can't lead because all the other studios are going over to blu-ray forcing us to make a decision. why chose propietary sony bloatware?

no thanx.
#8.3 whocares78 on 24 Jan 2008 - 00:56
why woudl we sign anythign to prolong the war.. we all just want this stupid war to be over, and most of us don't care who wins...
