aXXo’s Pirated Movies Used to Promote the iMac

The DVD ripper aXXo is without a doubt one of the most popular DVD-rippers. Even though he hasn’t been active since November 2007, his rips are still widely used, even by commercial outlets such as the John Lewis store. They must have thought, “Why use a real DVD if we can use a pirated movie for free?”

The aXXo rip was shown on an iMac displayed on an Apple stand at a John Lewis store. A member of the Hexus forums discovered this remarkable promotional material, and writes: “So I was in my local John Lewis store a week or so back, and I was checking out their new little Apple mac area, which had lots of Macs on display, with some desks setup and other accessories. They also had some wall mounted iMacs. Imagine my surprise when getting closer to one of them to see ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest’ - ripped by Axxo playing.”

Using a ripped DVD is bit odd because this is certainly not the best promotional material. Regular DVDs or free HD-content looks much better on an iMac monitor. One thing is clear though, aXXo’s presence has now moved beyond the Internet, and for him it must be flattering to see that commercial outlets appreciate his work. Perhaps this might motivate him to return? The last official aXXo torrent was uploaded November 11, after that it has been awfully quiet. There were rumors that he got caught, others said he had an accident. However, the official statement is that he decided to take a break.

John Lewis was not available for comment, the MPAA probably wont appreciate it that much, but they have our support.

#16 chicken-royal on 24 Jan 2008 - 01:33
That's pretty funny actually. Wonder if any other stores have been using the same, or other, films from a similar source.

The original Microbytes Store in Montreal plays episodes downloaded from the internet... for the past year whenever im in there they play ones from EZTV. I don't recall then playing movies though, but I don't go there daily.
#18.1 Enrickey on 24 Jan 2008 - 05:22
I worked there over the summer, the way it basically works is that an employee usually just brings something on memory key that he downloaded at home. The manager just doesn't care.

As far as the music in the store goes, the guy responsible is always Julius, he's the salesman with long hair that works during the week.

By original store, you mean Pointe Claire, right?

I have also seen this in some Apple Stores in India , was really shocking.

Well there u go; if the RIAA wants to show the muscles then go ahead and sue Apple instead of the poor college students.
#20.1 linuxamp on 24 Jan 2008 - 04:56
You mean MPAA, RIAA would only care if Apple were playing audio on that machine.

Im sure they have rights to the audio track and sound track.

I used to work at a CompUSA and some workers were stupid enough to do the same thing, well not aXXo releases but still-in-theater movies on store display machines. I mean c'mon, it's one thing to play a ripped DVD that's owned by the store since real DVDs get stolen all the time from drives but if you didn't rip it yourself at least change the filename so nobody would know.

Never heard of this aXXO dude is this guy a scene ripper or some torrent dude eh?

The other day i was at logic house computers they had computer setup with a huge HD monitor/lcd and to show it off they were playing a nice HD vs of the matrix so i double click the screen no surprise its a scene MKV blueray rip of the movie. Though if you think about it can they afford a blueray player for the display model since its a small computer store.

#22.2 Drimacus on 24 Jan 2008 - 13:46
no offense dude, but he's not a dvd ripper, he's a re-encoder of dvd-rips released by real scene groups...... only real noobs always fail to realize that (not pointing fingers at anyone)...

A couple of months ago we got an Anti-Virus message about a file. When we checked, turns out the user had plugged in a USB external drive (not allowed here), and while looking for the infected file (ageofempirescrack.exe) we found a folder with dozens and dozens of originally named files from aXXo.
#24 medion on 24 Jan 2008 - 07:19
I saw something similar when I was waiting in a pc-store. While I was waiting I went over to the samsung lcd tv which they had connected to a pc. They didn't hide the mediaplayer playlist, so I saw there were 5 HD Movie rip's in that playlist
#25 Chicane-UK on 24 Jan 2008 - 08:00
Gawd. The lawyers are gonna go to town on this.

Why they couldn't just Handbrake or something and rip their own films for displaying on the screen is beyond me!

Nice Nice

Surely Apple could have supplied them with a decent promo to show?
I NEVER keep original file names - i have my own way to name things, which is always ARTIST - TRACK NAME or the company in place of artist, in the case of a series: EG: BBC - The Street - S01 E05
Simple, to the point, no extra "."'s and no names of cappers/releasers.

Should this really be on the front page? Just because some idiot employee uses a pirated video on a display model, it doesn't mean that Apple or the store condones it or Apple corporate is saying to use bootleg files as promos
#28.1 Markus-J on 24 Jan 2008 - 12:43
No, but it gives the impression that John Lewis is promoting pirated films.
Apple has nothing to do with this...

If was with Microsoft then it should be even sticked, right?
#29 daveoc64 on 25 Jan 2008 - 00:28
Ok, a few notes:

1) This is in the UK, The Recording Industry Associaton of America wont care, nor will the more appropriate MPAA.
2) This isn't in an Apple store, so it's outside of their control.
3) It's entirely possible that a customer did this, I can't see a staff member waiting to download a torrent or whatever.

I've been in that store, it's my nearest too and the Macs are usually showing a promotional loop, so I don't see why they'd download a movie for any of them.
#30 obsolete_power on 25 Jan 2008 - 04:43
HAHAHA This is great, I still don't understand why they used rips to promote something that needs highest quality video format....They may want to check the copy of Leopard running on that machine, who knows what release group they got that from lol!
