Microsoft Corporation has announced second quarter records for revenue ($16.37 billion, a 30% increase over last year’s period), operating income ($6.48 billion, a 87% increase) and diluted earnings per share ($0.50, a 92% increase). During the quarter, Microsoft rolled out new consumer focused offerings such as Windows Home Server, new versions of the Zune media player and the next generation of Windows Live Online Services. Sales to business customers remained brisk in the quarter with Microsoft Business Division and the Server and Tools business each experiencing double-digit revenue growth rates over the prior year and together increased revenue over $1 billion versus the comparable quarter last year.

We are in the midst of another strong year with great momentum heading into calendar year 2008. We continue to see healthy demand from both businesses and consumers in the United States and our growth in emerging markets is especially strong. Looking across Brazil, Russia, India and China, our field revenue reached a combined growth rate over 65% this quarter. As we look ahead, our Windows Server 2008 launch, with our virtualization solution, will further our quest to bring exceptional value to our customers,” said Kevin Turner, chief operating officer at Microsoft.

That's a lot of the Wendy's Value Menu.

Plus I'm sure Billy G and Steve B are more than happy to don the red Wendy's girl wig.

Not that bad for a criticized company as Microsoft ..

so did Microsoft do better than apple's earnings this time. That what it sounds like.
#5.1 Beastage on 25 Jan 2008 - 00:34
You can not even compare the two

MS is gigantic compared to Apple

MS Quarterly revenue on average is 1.5x that of Apple's yearly revenue

They sold 100 million copies of Vista (probably OEM + retail).

So much for Vista's sluggish sales. I bet they know it wouldn't do that well and just increase the price to cover it. Really is quite expensive.
#8.1 M118LR on 25 Jan 2008 - 07:07
Vista costs the same as XP. How is that expensive?

Lay off what? MS can buy the entire planet and Vista will still suck. How about putting in $1B to fix it? Looks like they can spare the cash. You'd think a company making so much money could do a little better than Vista.

NOW I know why the EU keeps picking MS for law suits.
#11.1 Dynames00 on 25 Jan 2008 - 02:26
because they are a bunch of socialists?
#11.2 Rascally on 25 Jan 2008 - 03:10
more like a bunch of greedy socialists.

(no offense to the EU residents out there)

(except if you're an EU politician...in which case, you're a greedy socialist. Just admit it.)

Note that it's usually competing companies invoking the EU investigations, not EU themselves. There's a big, big, difference here.
(no offense to the EU residents out there)

No offense taken, unlike in the US, many, including me, are proud of our social democracies and e.g. well developed welfare systems and social safety nets that follow.

Man, and here I was thinking Vista was a complete failure.

(Yes, I realize they sell other stuff, but if Vista really failed, they wouldn't have done as well as they did).

Microsoft will single-handedly carry the market tomorrow just like Apple brought down all the tech stocks when they announced their earnings.

#13.2 DATmafia on 25 Jan 2008 - 04:23
It's not so much fun living in an economy where a precious few companies have the power to influence an entire market. (i.e. MS announced that Windows demand declined 15% in this quarter sending stock prices for Intel, AMD and others tumbling on heels of this mornings announcement.) When that bubble bursts for good millions of jobs will be at steak. Yay for MS and the full head of steam they have now. But there will come a time of market saturation and negative growth for the tech sector. Heaven help us when it happens.

i wouldn't worry about that too much it won't happen for ages. most of the world's population doesn't even have one computer.

Just so you know much of that was due to strong sales of Office Suite, SQL Server 2005 and Other softwares but surely not due to XBox.
#14.1 +stifler6478 on 25 Jan 2008 - 15:04
Uh, the Xbox division posted a $3.5 Billion revenue in the US alone. So yeah, it was a decent chunk of it.

Though I'm not sure why you think it matters to anyone.
