Washington DC - 41 Washington DC workers have been fired or suspended after they accessed thousands of porn sites on city computers. Nine employees were fired while the other 32 were suspended. Both male and female employees were disciplined after the month-long investigation.
The city’s Office of the Chief Technology Officer says the nine fired employees access pornographic websites 20,000 times in 2007 or about 100 times per day over the course of the 200 work day per year schedule. The suspended employees visited pornographic sites 2000 times in the same year.

Unlucky I guess.

Ha ha!

But then again, why haven't they filtered these websites out? Over here in England, if you work at the DWP even search engines or online email services are banned. You can't access google or anything.

Forget porn. >.>

what i dont get is WHY it's such a big deal? ... cause the bottom line is as long as those employee's are doing there jobs i dont see whats the big deal.
#5.1 reech on 26 Jan 2008 - 12:18
What's the big deal? Look, next time you don't get your housing check, you can thank the staff that a looking at Betty's Bits and Bobs Bonanza rather than doing their job

And besides - how completely STUPID do you have to be to browse porn at work - I mean, come on!
#5.2 Rob on 26 Jan 2008 - 12:34
There's a reason the acronym 'NSFW' was invented. Don't look at porn at work! It's such a basic concept!
#5.3 betasp on 26 Jan 2008 - 13:55
I hope you are kidding.
#5.4 cork1958 on 26 Jan 2008 - 15:27
Why is this such a big deal?

You must work in a union shop where the union is to dumb to get rid of the worthless sh**s and the company to chicken sh** to do anything about it? Sounds like where I work! Stupid freaking unions anyway!

How would you like to be paying their wages for work you hired them for and then find them not doing it? Even if they were still able to fully do their jobs, they obviously don't have enough to do, so get rid of them anyway!

I think he was saying that IF they were still doing their jobs.
Even if they were still able to fully do their jobs, they obviously don't have enough to do

Even if this happened on a lunch break? Or in the after hours after a long day before going home?

I think what the parent is getting at -- what is the big deal of this compared to if you browse other websites, for example daily news sites, when you are on a break -- that is, if you are already doing your job like everyone else.

The only thing I can think of is that society consider it unethical. And that is it.

So, that is why Washington DC has won the annual US Public Service Arm-Wrestling Championship for the last 4 years in a row. Their right-hand muscles are over-developed.

Yes, the title is the same as the source.

Good luck for that 32, lol.

I can't count on one hand the number of people I've caught surfing porn at work, a few of them in the act (that was fun) -- sadly none of them were fired.
#9 Skyfrog on 26 Jan 2008 - 16:35
Why would you want to look at that stuff at work anyway? I mean you can't exactly...uh..you know. Unless that's why nine of them were fired instead of suspended.
#10 metallithrax on 26 Jan 2008 - 17:29
At work I have known of one person viewing porn, when I found out I spoke to the boss and we installed some tracking software, after letting those people in the office know of course. They guy in question (the only guy in the office) disabled the software, but didn't browse porn again.

He doesn't work here anymore.

The other day I was on one of the PC's, and needed to check something online, went to google and started typing. When the previous search list came up I was surprised to see "teen casting couch","teen porn movies" etc. I think I know who it is, as there is one guy that is currently working until 10pm by himself. But without knowing when these searches were made, I cannot prove anything.

god.. dont these people have computers at home. a little patience until you can go home and view p0rn can save your job.

If you have to surf porn at work you should at least use an anonymous Proxy... I like Make Me A Ninja cause they seem the least Spammy. And if you google through them your terms are saved for the next person to see.
#12.1 Skyfrog on 26 Jan 2008 - 20:26
Those are only useful for hiding your point of origin from the sites you visit. They have nothing to do with hiding what you have been doing on your own PC. It depends on how they were caught really. If the employers found the history of what sites they had gone to they should have used CCleaner or something to remove all that. If the boss simply walked in and saw them then no software in the world is going to save them.

lol oh dear what a waste of time. I mean seriously instead of surfing porn at work why dont the male/female parties involved just hook it up at work. I mean seriously if a guy is sat doing work at his desk and needs to resort to porn just go chat up the gal sat at the opposite desk from you and chat her up. Then one day just slip in the conversation"sooo what you doing for lunch" then one day BAM next thing you know ... well you get the picture ok its a bit more effort but at least it will save your job
#13.1 Skyfrog on 26 Jan 2008 - 20:30
Nope, then you get fired for sexual harassment. Besides even if it did save your job, you lose your marriage.

Marriage is one of the reasons people look at porn.

Haha, you said it, my friend.

They got what they deserved. Seriously, you can't stop looking at porn for the 8 hours you are supposed to be working?

This incident is no surprise.

Washington DC is one of the most corrupt and incompetently managed cities on the planet. They've had recent incidents of massive embezzlement in the tax office and teachers union.

This is a city that's ranked 51st in its friendliness to business, where self defense weapons are outlawed and there's speed cameras all over the place.

This is the lasting legacy of the Coke smoking former mayor, Marion Barry.

Avoid it at all costs.

Their jobs must be REALLY boring if they have the time to look at smut while they work.
