The rumours of the company abandoning its handset business weren’t spot on, but there was a kernel of truth deep within. Motorola Incorporated is reportedly exploring the structural and strategic realignment of its businesses. The company’s alternatives may include the separation of Mobile Devices from its other businesses in order to permit each business to grow and better serve its customers. Motorola’s Board of Directors is currently in the process of deciding whether or not a transaction should occur, and when the time for such a possible move would be ideal. The good news here is not that Motorola knows it is doing poorly in the mobile sector, but that it wants to fix the problem.

All of our businesses have exceptional people, products and intellectual property and the ability to achieve category leadership in their markets. We are exploring ways in which our Mobile Devices Business can accelerate its recovery and retain and attract talent while enabling our shareholders to realize the value of this great franchise,” said Greg Brown, President and Chief Executive Officer.
