Fourth Undersea Cable Cut

Advertisement (Why?)
Internet services in Qatar have been seriously disrupted because of damage to an undersea telecoms cable linking the Gulf state to the UAE, the fourth such incident in less than a week. Qatar Telecom (Qtel) said on Sunday the cable was damaged between the Qatari island of Haloul and the UAE island of Das on Friday. The cause of damage is not yet known, but ArabianBusiness.com has been told unofficially the problem is related to the power system and not the result of a ship's anchor cutting the cable, as is thought to be the case in the other three incidents. It is expected to take at least "a few days" to fix, according to one person with knowledge of the situation.

I bet "terrorists" have lowered the anchor on their ship and are dragging it along the seabed causing the cable to break, or at least bend, causing internal damage.

They've already confirmed that 12 hours before and 12 hours after the cable breaks, NO SHIPS were in the area.

Whatever/whoever is breaking these cables is doing it under the surface.

I'm from the U.A.E ..we've had this "internal damage" before too...

Last time they said the same thing about cable cuts by anchors or whatever..we'd slow speed internet connection for about a week and a half..

It's the same thing this time..slow as hell..

We've just two ISP's..and they're ruling us all

Yeah, blame the "terrorists"... but you have no idea who they actually are

No, a stupid little row boat isn't taking out the internet across the asia and the middle east. This is deliberate and requires quite the capabilities to achieve.
#8.1 whocares78 on 05 Feb 2008 - 00:28
it's not that hard, a deep sea diver with a blow torch could easlily do it...

I see you've got terrorists in quotes, says a lot right there. As for "quite the capabilities to achieve"..scuba gear(maybe) and a cable cutter...not too tough to come by or use.

how does the Power system take out a fibre in the middle of the ocean ???? i call BS on that one, seeig there is no power system in the middel of the ocean......

and i doubt it is the CIA/NSA/any other **A
however 4 in a week is not accidental, i'd say terrorists, disrupting a country's internet infrastructure is a very viable option, as it disrupts work causing massive losses of $$$ due to missed business oportunities companies websites being unaccessible from foreigners, not being able to acces foreign web sites etc etc etc there are companies out there that loose millions of dollars a day when their sites are down...and almosta ll businesses nowdays rely on email

Don't know whats happening, but
if its a choice between CIA or terrorists, I'd go with the CIA

For terrorist action, they're only effecting the ME, theres being no news briefing, just lately they have being making use of the internet, not disrupting it,

sorry but no, this more CIA type covert behaviour then "let the world know its us who dun it" terrorist behaviour.

No terrorists group, whether its red hand, IRA, Basque, Middle East group has ever done a act and not owned up to doing it

it's not very covert, if it was the CIA Ii am SURE they could and woudl do it without you even knowing. or at the very least take out one at a time in a more controlled time frame, i.e. over a year or 2 not in a week, it is TOOOO obvious there is somethign going on and if caught out there woudl be an international incident, like the start of a WAR

Things to think about.

Recent quote from the Pentagon:

The internet needs to be dealt with as if it were an "enemy weapons system"

What country is this hurting the most right now? Iran

They've confirmed that no boats were in the area 12 hours before and after the cuts. So whatever/whoever is doing this is underwater.

The cables they use underwater aren't nearly as strong or insulated as the above ground cables. Like someone else already said, a diver with a simple blow torch could cut these lines or a small submarine with robotic arms.

Why would terrorists want to knock out power/communications to their own countries? I guess people could say they'd do it and blame the US, but it would hurt the terrorists more than anyone else. They rely heavily on these lines to communicate. I also want to make it clear that I'm not referring to everyone living in these countries as terrorists.

What is usually the first move when one country attacks another? Take out their communications

This other theory going around about plates shifting and causing the cables to break is BS. What are the odds of plates shifting on 4 seperate occasions and each plate shift breaking a very vital communication cable?

Something doesn't add up at all. I wouldn't be surprised if Iran is attacked sometime soon. I wouldn't be surprised, but I wouldn't agree with it.

It'd be very sickening, everything seemed to have calmed down and gone peaceful and the world setting itself to rights again.

Please, don't Bush be even more stupid then we could ever believe and stir it all up again, if he does, he is only going to bring back world hatred for for innocent Americans

The back-talk between Bush and the leader of Iran has been quiet, but do you really see Bush leaving office without saying or doing something? I mean the guy had the recent war in Iraq planned out before he even became president and the 9/11 attacks occured.

I agree it's not needed. People all over the world already hate the US enough as it is. I get attaked on the internet occasionally for being an American and nothing more. I just ignore it, because it's people trying to run their mouth over the internet. I just wish the people that hate us could live or visit here for a little while and see that a large chunk of us hate what's going on just as much as everyone else.

So they could blame the West and incite more hatred. It'd certainly not be unprecedented.

When Israel cut fuel to the west bank two weeks ago, more of the power grid went down than that which was supposedly have been affected.

You didn't even try looking then because there's news about it all over the internet. All it takes is a simple Google/Yahoo search.

And you're conspiracy nutter comment above was immature. When 5 communication cables are cut in a short period of time, there's no way it's an accident.

You're attitude towards everyone on here is getting more than old. You should try to stop coming off as an expert on everything when you're clearly not. You treat people on here like they're beneath you
