- Can't see what the hype is about. SP1 doesn't bring anything new to Vista - it's a collection of updates that are already on Windows Update.
I'll apply it when it comes as it's obviously a benchmark and useful to guarentee that xxx updates are applied - but other than that I'm really not arsed.

- Here's the timing for SP1 availability for current Windows Vista users:
* In mid-March, we will release Windows Vista SP1 to Windows Update (in English, French, Spanish, German and Japanese) and to the download center on microsoft.com. Customers who visit Windows Update can choose to install Service Pack 1. If Windows Update determines that the system has one of the drivers we know to be problematic, then Windows Update will not offer SP1. Since we know that some customers may want to update to SP1 anyhow, the download center will allow anyone who wants to install SP1 to do so.
* In mid-April, we will begin delivering Windows Vista SP1 to Windows Vista customers who have chosen to have updates downloaded automatically. That said, any system that Windows Update determines has a driver known to not update successfully will not get SP1 automatically. As updates for these drivers become available, they will be installed automatically by Windows Update, which will unblock these systems from getting Service Pack 1. The result is that more and more systems will automatically get SP1, but only when we are confident they will have a good experience.
* The remaining languages will RTM in April. -

- I had XP "devil own" release a month or more before XP was made available RTM, and it was the final RTM version. From experience Microsoft runs the RTM for quite a while before finally "signing it off" to us plebs. The Beta "pre release" versions are usually bogus, months old code, which they use to sucker supposed "testers" to keep them feeling "involved".
XP SP3 is what I want, but after all this time, I have lost interest, just as I have with Vista. It's all far too little too late. Microsoft have got an awful lot of catching up to do, to make people feel there are using something "special". Enthusiasts and neophiliac will find themselves drawn to Linux.

- I'll be as excited as everyone else if Microsoft are really going to show us their bits, but how can we be sure it's really their bits? I'd like to encourage anyone who may have seen Microsoft's bits to come forward, so they can identify their bits when they whip'em out. I think anything less would be risky.

Last week, I’ve been getting reports of SP1 bits being available on torrents. I asked Microsoft earlier last week if these builds were, as some were saying, the final Vista SP1 bits. And, as usual, the Windows client team wasn’t saying a whole lot.
On January 29, a Microsoft spokeswoman said Vista SP1 had yet to be officially released to manufacturing. The recent SP1 Release Candidate (RC) Refresh 2 is not the RTM build, the spokeswoman said. “And we’re not commenting on the build number,” she said, when I asked whether the “18000″ build number was the RTM version.
The latest buzz is that Microsoft will announce that Vista SP1 has RTM’ed on Monday February 4, according to the Tech ARP site. Even if SP1 doesn’t hit on February 4, its release is imminent, sources agree.
