Microsoft: Vista SP1 Available In Mid-March

Microsoft (NSDQ:MSFT) may have soothed the angst of the service pack hungry masses by releasing Vista SP1 to manufacturing, but users won't be able to actually download it until mid-March at the earliest, company officials said Monday.

During beta testing for Vista SP1, Microsoft found that some device drivers were causing problems on systems with SP1 installed. Although the issues can be fixed by uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, Microsoft decided this would be too complicated for most users. As a result, Microsoft will spend the next month hunting for additional problematic device drivers, said David Zipkin, senior product manager in Windows Client Group. "With drivers, we wanted to make sure when folks upgrade to Vista that they have a smooth experience," Zipkin said.

What about Windows XP SP3?

Also there were some rumors that SP1 can't be slipstreamed any update on this?

SP3 is on a separate track as compared to Vista SP1 and Server 2008, and handled by an entirely separate team in another country, so it's not related at all and still could be out anytime in 1H2008. Rumors put it out earlier rather than later.

SP1 cannot be slipstreamed in the true integrated sense we've come to know with XP, but hopefully that will be remedied by the time SP2 is out.

Fair enough...

Some users install a download then moan Vista crap.........

Microsoft released the SP1 Release Candidates to the same public they are now deeming too stupid to re-install a driver. I suspect that many techies will now turn to torrents to download the service pack instead of downloading it directly from Microsoft. Somehow I don't think this can be in Microsoft's best interest.

You may be surprised just how many clueless users are out there. They just fire up the computer and expect it to work like microwave, refrigerators do.

Still, I agree that this kind of decision seems unnecessary. But many techies will also know how to download the SP1 directly from Microsoft by doing a little searching.

I'm well aware about the masses of clueless users. I just think that Microsoft's bipolar personality improperly decided that the same users whom they deemed competent enough to install a publicly available (and potentially more problematic) release candidate are now deemed too incompetent to re-install some drivers if needed.
I haven't found SP1 RTM from an official MS channel yet, and I've done quite a bit of searching. Feel free to PM me if you know something I don't
Update: It appears Microsoft has come around and will offer SP1 earlier:

I am surprised that as a beta tester we aren't getting the SP1 RTM early...

that is a good decision by microsoft because many people still are complaining that vista sucks just because they are having problems with drivers. This is the fault of hardware manufacturers, they had plenty of time to test.

Now MS won't release it until they figure out what drivers are faulty and work with the developers in order to correct them.

many people are rushing right now to torrent site to get the RTM of the SP1...including me. I want to try it and see if it is any good.

So by your logic Microsoft's decision is good, although people like yourself are forced by the same decision to get their RTM version from potentially shady torrent sites? I can't see how this is beneficial for Microsoft, or anyone else.

I'm not rushing either, and i also like my coffe black and my programs working. This doesn't explain why the decision by Microsoft is good.

and just as i post that they change the link and the title.

it was a 1.3GB downloadable file before, now its a 355kb installer...

hmmmmm...

Why not release it now as a somewhat hidden download for those of us that are tech-savvy enough to deal with driver issues; then release to everyone via Windows Update when things are straightened out. Besides, how could they get through an RTM with these known issues anyway? Grr... I'm a little impatient because any improvement to Vista would be welcome.
