Contrary to rumors going around the web regarding an alleged screencap of an internal Sharepoint site listing the Vista SP1 release date, it's going to be a while before the masses see SP1. Biplab Paul a Technical Consultant at Microsoft has made a post on his blog detailing the roll out of SP1.

When will SP1 be shipped?
  • Mile Stone 1 (Feb 4, 2008): Available to OEM and Retail Channel
  • Mile Stone 2 (Early March 2008): Vista SP1 Volume Licensing Availability
  • Mile Stone 3 (Mid March 2008): Vista SP1 availability through Windows Update/MSDN/TechNet
  • Mile Stone 4 (April 2008): Will be pushed via Automatic Update

After reading all the hoopla about this release date ... that release date ... build numbers etc etc, it's quite obvious that troll bait like this is Neowins way of spicing up a slow news day.

Nothing here, move on ...

Its not spicing up slow news day, it appears to be putting out the facts... as rumors have been blasting about like light sabers.

"It's going to be a while before anyone sees SP1." Not news and not true. It was released Feb 4 (actually even before that).

Good point, edited.

I am supprised that it will be "pushed via Automatic Update" in April. Non-security Service Pack are normally made available as optional updates on WU. Even XPSP2, the mother of all security updates, was optional for the first few months. All of the security patches in SP1 are already available via WU.

Got it...but there's one thing I don't quite understand why there're two months between Milestone 1 & 4?
Another long time to wait...wait...wait...

There's no point putting doubt into the minds of people who have already installed the SP1 build that's been floating around. It IS the real thing, all the build numbers and build tags match up, these dates relate only to the wider public release.

Is it possible to confirm if one got the RTM version before it is installed? or do one have to install the .exe file first before you are totally sure?
#8.1 JamesWeb on 08 Feb 2008 - 15:01
Look at the .exe's properties, under the details tab, the build number is misleadingly 6.0.6001.17028, modified 6th Feb 2008, and on the Digital Signatures tab it was digitally signed by Microsoft on the 19th Jan 2008, that's how you can be confident it hasn't been modified since leaving MS. If the exe file you have matches all this, that's the RTM build.

Mile Stone 1 (Feb 4, 200 : Available to OEM and Retail Channel

Note that doesn't include smaller OEM System Builders. As one, we don't have access to it at this point. Really should have said "Royalty OEM" or such instead of just "OEM."

Here are the MD5 hashes from both x86 and x64 RTM SP1 that the editors at ZDNET received directly from Microsoft.

32-bit (434MB): d597866e93bc8f80ecca234c4e9ce5a2

64-bit (726MB): 983308426e8ee7649f53b41f4e5c42d4

Link with the info is here, for those who'd rather see for themselves - http://talkback.zdnet.com/5208-12354-0.htm...amp;start=-9978

I've been told there are SP1 RTM files "out there" that match these hashes...

Vista - example of how not to manage a product.

MSDN/TechNet release the same date as release to the general public (aka Windows Update) is just asking for trouble. How are the developers suppose to prepare and have applications that will not crash and drivers that do not suck? How are the techs suppose to prepare to migrate all those corporate networks? If the Service Pack is done as RTM means then put it out to them.

So instead what do we have - everyone using questionable sources. What is one of the rules of security???
