Dell to Scale Back AMD Machines on Website

Computer maker Dell Inc. has stopped selling many computers with processors from Advanced Micro Devices Inc. on its Web site, although it will continue selling some through retailers. This decision is a setback for AMD, which managed to break Dell's exclusive supplier relationship with Intel Corp. in 2006. However, the computer maker was sure to make clear that they weren't abandoning AMD: "We regularly adjust our product offerings and how customers can purchase those products," said spokesman David Frink. "The majority of our consumer AMD-based systems are available through our retail partners and telephone sales...Dell is committed to the AMD product line as a long-term partner to provide flexibility and maximum choice for our customers."

Dell.com will continue to offer desktop and notebook computers and servers with AMD processors for business customers, and a single consumer-oriented desktop model with an AMD processor, while Dell machines with AMD processors can still be had at retailers such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Best Buy Co. Roger Kay, a technology analyst with Endpoint Technologies Associates, said the harm to AMD could be minimal if Dell sticks with AMD processors for machines sold through retailers. But, he said, AMD might be pressured into cutting prices on those chips. Intel declined to comment.

Every day just gets worse and worse for AMD. I feel sorry for them.

Thanks to Intel's anti-competitive business practices.

Oops, someone didn't read the article.

Dell said it was a reflection of what their consumers seem to want.

In other words it has nothing to do with Intel and their business practices.

Maybe AMD should step it up a little instead of whining about their competition.

yeah, amd is just going down hill

Intel need to buyout AMD, so no more competition

Monopoly = consumers screwed

If it wasn't for AMD, we won't be able to buy intel CPUs so cheaply.

Indeed, but it is going that way anyway...

If I was Bill Gates, I would give AMD like $2B and hire a couple top engineers for them.

Do you think that would give them a chance? I don't really know how the industry works.

That or IBM. Either way something needs to happen soon or AMD might never recover, which would be a real shame.

amd and ibm should consider a merger, or at least a very strong partnership

It is really sad, ive always been an intel buyer but without AMD intel will screw us over. Bloody core 2, its the devil, it gives us so much power but is merciless to its rivals.

Already debunked by ars technica.

Um...I'm not too sure there's that much to debunk, really; the title is a little misleading, I agree, but the article does state:

They need to sell ATi and cut their losses. The ATi move was a bad deal.
#11.1 RAID 0 on 09 Feb 2008 - 21:40
It's still too early to declare that. Give it a few years to see what their R&D turns out.
#11.2 C_Guy on 11 Feb 2008 - 16:41
Nah I agree with Mike - ATI was a horrible move.
