As part of the Member-Written Review of the Week, the front page presents to you another review written by one of our very own forum members and posted in Reviews by Members for Members. This week I have chosen KeR's review of the MacBook Air. Pictures are courtesy of KeR.

"Everyone knows it’s thin, how thin you say? Well if I were a villain in a James Bond movie who killed people by throwing Notebooks at them, I’d be very efficient at it. In all honesty if one were to throw it like a Frisbee at someone’s neck, I think it would cut their head clean off their shoulders. Well maybe not quiet, but you get my point – it’s thin. At just 3.0 pounds, with a 13.3” LED screen and full sized illuminated keyboard the MacBook Air feels just right, especially when sitting on my lap. I can’t imagine much being improved, visually. As usual the build quality is on par with everything else Apple makes; top notch."

Top review though, especially with the obvious Apple-love shown by the author haha.

By the time you start hanging USB cords & all the extra external devices off that thing because it lacks internal devices, it will end up outweighing the Macbook Pro..... I picked that thing up in a Best Buy showroom a few days back, and it felt like it was going to snap in half. It looks better off as a display unit on a shelf, &/or the use of browsing the internet from a car, or possibly a dorm room with limited space.

The only problem being how could anyone living in a dorm room possibly afford one?

Easy, college does not mean "poor" and im not even taking into account the parents simply buying it for thier kid. I see TONS of kids carrying MacBook Pro's on the local college campus (also the college I went too) and they cost MORE then the Air

As for the comments on peripherals, I don't know about most of you, but the majority of my data resides on the internet or my 4 GB flash drive. I myself own a MacBook pro and quite frankly if you took the DVD drive out of it I really wouldn't have any problems doing my daily work.

My thoughts exactly. The only thing I ever do with my drive is install apps. I used to burn CD's but don't anymore because of my iPod. It's largely useless to me really.

I'm all for a light-hearted tone but this has simply gone too far as to make it trivial. Comparisons to James Bond villains? Give me a break. There's nothing really new or interesting in the review and it isn't very deep. If reviews are going to be posted on the front page then I'd like them to be useful.

AGREED! This isn't even a review! Its a first-look AT BEST.

Have you guys written any better on this topic? Or seen any better on this topic on Neowin?

This is a relevant review, and it's the best Neowin has for the MBA right now. I thought the review was good, but if you guys don't, feel free to buy your own MacBook Air and review it

As usual the price is on par with everything else Apple makes; ridiculously high.

Fixed.

It's a useless product. You get far more power and functionality with a macbook for a fraction of the price. Same size screen. Sure it's not as thin, but so what. If a macbook is too heavy for you then hit the gym.
#7.1 QuarterSwede on 13 Feb 2008 - 05:44
You obviously haven't ever picked one up. It even makes my 12" PB feel like a cow. And it's hardly useless. It'll do everything the MacBook does on a daily basis.

Out of all the comments only one has commented on the actual product

"Yes there is software included that lets you borrow the drive of other computers, but its slow to say the least; it took just about one hour to install Photoshop CS3. Assume there is no secondary computer around, what can one do? Not much. " maybe if it had a gigabit lan it woudl be a lot quicker but wifi is just too slow

battery problems.. 4 hours for a NEW unit, will only decrease..

i dont get it, he pretty much says it aint that great but then says any apple fan MUST have one. says somethign about apple fans doesnt it

oh yeah and i think the comparison to a supermodel is good, they are hell skinny, tooo skinny as far as i am concerned. supermodels cut back on food to be that skinny, apple cuts back on peripherals, id be too scared of breakign them (both the supermodel and the laptop) a lot of supermodels are on drugs, so are a lot of apple executives judging by this laptop..they are both all looks and no substance
#9.1 +Dakkaroth on 11 Feb 2008 - 19:10
That's right, this laptop is missing features (love handles, chest, booty) as a supermodel.

Ker:

God forbid you're enthusiastic about your Apple product. Be careful not love and enjoy it too much.

Granted, your review might not have been the most objective one, but you're enjoying a great Apple product, which for most (colossally shortsighted) people on this site is inexplicable. They just can't possibly grasp the significance of the MBA and what it means not only for us in the present, but for the future of computing.
#10.1 whocares78 on 11 Feb 2008 - 04:26
i actually thought his review was fairly objective, he did point out the good and bad about it pretty well. his conclusion was also pretty good. i think the paragraph posted here does not do him justice in the fanboy depoartment.
#10.2 rm20010 on 11 Feb 2008 - 06:38
Newsflash: Apple is one of many companies advancing technology.

Keyword: Many. Not only.
#10.3 C_Guy on 11 Feb 2008 - 16:51
The only "shortsightedness" on this site is you, LTD. Just because other people disagree with your love (or anyone else's love) of Apple's crap doesn't make them shortsighted or unable to "grasp" things it simply means they have a different opinion.

Is that so hard for you to "grasp"?

And if someone can find a way to "love" a laptop with no replaceable battery, no optical drive, no ethernet, and only one lonely USB port to connect all the things Apple didn't give you then good for them. It means very little for the "future" of computing.

If you want to discuss the significance of the MBA let's review Apple's stock history from the day MBA was released 'til now.

Numbers do not lie.

did anyone proof read this?? "Well maybe not quiet" (erm i think you mean quite)

#13 Couch Potato on 11 Feb 2008 - 11:42
Negative commenting is easy guys. At least he tried his best and if he weren't an Apple fan he'd probably wouldn't buy one just to test.
#14 Fireware on 11 Feb 2008 - 12:46
well being a fan of any profit driven company is naive.
all they want is your hard earned cash, and doing it as effectively as possible for maximum long term gains

as for my personal opinion, its a bit of a gimick, because apple wants you to focus on the thinnnnnnest, rather than the under-powered cpu [meaning rivals ultra portables offer faster cpus] and low battery life [2.5hrs. a full 50mins off the average rival ultra portable]* that removes it from ultraportable section.

bottom line: IMO gimicky and a misfit

Ah, the happiness of using my own MacBook Air makes most of these comments seem so delightfully irrelevant. Heavy traveler, loves a beautiful piece of technology, needs a good screen, good keyboard, in short a pleasant medium with which to work. Need no extras.
(1 reply) #16 C_Guy on 11 Feb 2008 - 16:57
As Apple's commercials indicate, the MBA is geared towards an audience who cares primarily about the thickness of their laptop.

Most people in the market for a laptop will be more concerned with things like processing power, hard drive capacity, warranty, battery life, and other features.

The MBA seems like an ideal choice for those who only care about the thickness of their laptop.
