A major outage hit BlackBerry users in North America on Monday afternoon, cutting off wireless e-mail for everyone. The problem, which BlackBerry owner Research In Motion described as a "critical severity outage" affecting users in the Americas, once again raised concerns about the stability of the e-mail service 10 months after a widespread crash last April.

RIM notified its clients of the outage in an e-mail. The total downtime was about 3 hours.

UPDATE: An outage which hit the BlackBerry mobile e-email service on Monday may have been caused by an upgrade to the systems of owner Research In Motion, its co-chief executive Jim Balsillie said on Tuesday.

I personally enjoyed reading that RIM notified its clients of the outage in an e-mail. I'm thinking that a lot of their customers didn't get the email given the scope and nature of the problem.

Ha! Thats as classic as the: "To Activate your phone service please call 1-999-679-6567" or "To Activate your internet service please enter AOL Keyword: Idiot"

Whats so great about this whole cellphone, do everything blackberry device anyway. Sounds like some people are much to dependent on one device and service.

Well, I have an email client on my normal computer, but like most BlackBerry users, am on the road most of the time with very limited access other than my BB. I didn't receive an email from RIM, but I also didn't notice an email outage. I did however think that there was a general internet outage on mine but that's more likely the excellent service I'm used to with AT&T

Sorry everybody, it was my fault.

I had sent a message to an invalid PIN and I hit re-send by accident. 2 hours later, poof, the system is down.

Isn't this like the old days of a VCR......you open the box and there is a tape telling you how to hook it up
and make it work? I know some would have access to a PC, but if you are traveling and the blackberry is
the only way to "keep in contact" via email.....what good is it to send an email saying your blackberry isn't
working? LOL....
