Microsoft appears to be looking for new ways to tie Windows Mobile phones and Zune media players together, although a Zune phone remains unlikely. Over the weekend, Microsoft developer "Mel" asked an open question on the Windows Mobile blog: "What are some ways the Zune player and a Windows Mobile device can work better together?"

Since then, more than 50 commenters have suggested ways that Microsoft might converge the two devices. The most common idea is to essentially replace the Windows Media Player on Windows Mobile devices with Zune software. "I proposed that WMP should be fazed out in favor of a combined WMP/Zune player which will synch with both Windows Media AND Zune, instead of having to have two separate apps with two different libraries for each device," wrote one commenter using the name Colin Walker.

I would like…

– Support the same formats
– Share the media wireless
– Have the same similar layout between the two
– WM should be about to send text, SMS and web files to the Zune
– See what the other people have on there playlist if they user lets you (Like Napster 1.0)

…have more but will keep it to a minimum.

Well I was totally appalled at their decision to make Zune music incompatible with PlaysForSure. Windows Mobile already supports PlaysForSure. Why the hell did they abandon it?

However, from where they are at right now, it would be very easy to converge Windows Mobile and Zune. Forget the idea of a new "Zune Phone." Any Windows Mobile phone that exists today is capable of being a "Zune Phone." Simply make a Zune application that runs on Windows Mobile. And make sure that it is capable of downloading music over the phone's Internet connection. That idea might make too much sense for Microsoft to follow though.

I've heard two explanations (both are kinda silly):

1. Because WMP and PlaysForSure software comes "bundled" with Windows, there are fears that if Microsoft creates hardware that directly works with it then that will be consider unfair and monopolistic. With an iPod the user has to install an application to get it to work. Or ....something.... so with a Zune you have to install something as well so it is a "level" playing field.

2. Even though Microsoft is what started this whole PlaysForSure format, they didn't want the users of THEIR device using OTHER online music stores.
