Today, YouTube released some brand new APIs to the community. With the new APIs, your website can be just like a brand new YouTube. You can be on YouTube without leaving their sites. Here are some of the features the API supports:

  • Upload videos and video responses to YouTube
  • Add/Edit user and video metadata (titles, descriptions, ratings, comments, favorites, contacts, etc)
  • Fetch localized standard feeds (most viewed, top rated, etc.) for 18 international locales
  • Perform custom queries optimized for 18 international locales
  • Customize player UI and control video playback (pause, play, stop, etc.) through software

To add onto that, TiVO also announced that they have set up a deal with YouTube that will allow people to play YouTube videos directly on their TV’s. Hey, no more getting off the couch!

What personal info???

That you'd rather watch lost than law and order... or that you watched guitar lessons on youtube???

Not that big of a deal.

I cant say that aggregated info matters much if its not identifiable (at least to me).

edit: in response to post #2

Tivo knows exactly who you are, what you watch, when, for how long, in what room (maybe this is only DirecTV?), what you rewind and record, and over a long period of time. If Google hadn't struck a deal to share user information they would have just bought them for the data alone. Add this information with what Google already collects and or will soon be collecting. Then add it to the NSA's TIA database and other information collection companies, throw in a few more technologies being implemented in the next five years (Real ID, RFID, DNA, Biometric, more GPS, to name a few.). And poof, freedoms not so free. This is going to be a long century.

The reason Google, Yahoo and others continues to collect so much information is because they have not encountered enough backlash to stop. They haven't gotten the backlash because people are ignorant of the consequences of having their personal lives available for all to see, search through, compiled, profiled.

Freedom and Privacy go hand in hand.

if it were ever found that TiVo were selling user identifiable information then they could have a very large class action against them, as it is in their privacy policy of every product they sell that personally identifiable information is not sold to the 3rd parties, only the aggregate data used in surveys.
