A new ranking of global brands shows Microsoft's reputation sinking in recent years. Among the possible factors: Apple's "I'm a Mac" ads.
Microsoft lands at No. 59 in the rankings for 2007, down from No. 11 in 2004, according to the survey from CoreBrand released Wednesday. "The effect of Apple's 'Hi, I'm a Mac' advertising campaign may have taken its toll on Microsoft," CoreBrand CEO James Gregory said in a statement.
In fairness to the folks in Redmond, they have fared far better in other recent brand studies. They were No. 1 on a list of Britain's top "superbrands" last year, and No.2 in an August BusinessWeek ranking of top global brands (trailing only Coca-Cola).

If people are ****ed at Microsoft, then it is because of Microsoft's doing. Poor experiences with Windows Vista, and all the stability issues in the past with Windows Me/98SE/98/95/3.1 have given some people a bad impression of Microsoft.

Fixed that for you.
Apart from that I agree entirely. Their old products were finicky, and Microsoft has taken an interesting direction with their new products that I can't say I agree with.
Related comment: I understand that there needs to be some kind of post-submission editing capability available to commenters, but if Neowin adopted a system like many others' that allowed commenters to review their posts as they would look before final submission, then after the fact editing wouldn't generally be necessary.
In any case, this new in-line editing capability, while a great idea in theory, leaves a lot to be desired in practice.

Stability issues? What stability issues?
There are no issues with Vista. If you dont't know how to update drivers and contact a software vender for a updated version of a software, turn off your PC and go outside.
Vista is meant to be the premier home / mass market operating system. It'll be used by people OTHER THAN COMPUTER GEEKS LIKE US. When criticizing peoples technical abilities, you should stand back and think about that. Moms and pops, or even grandparents wouldn't know anything about contacting vendors, or even the concept of drivers. Why should they have to?
Besides, he was referring to previous versions of Windows. They didn't become legendarily unreliable without good reason!
Sure, all of these (well, with the possible exception of celestial alignment) have some effect on the survey that CoreBrand did. It is just that no one can separate all the factors out and say "this item had that effect" and "this other item affected the survey this other amount".
Wrong. Many fools actually believe that Apple BS.

UAC only pops up when doing adminstrative tasks that affect the whole system. OS X does the same, but asks you to put your password in too, which is even more annoying. I never see the UAC prompt unless I am installing/updating a program, so I don't know what you dumbasses are complaining about. It is only annoying when you first install windows and have to install all your programs.
Instead of admitting where they went wrong they bash XP the best and most stable version of windows yet. It just seems to me they don't care about their end users. They are more focus on beating every company like Google to care about us.
Apple was dead and Microsoft saved them 4-5 years back my reason would be they have no one to copy from if they didn't help Apple.
Microsoft has no ideas of their own.
Microsoft is bashing XP to force people to use Vista.
Their commercials are like "PCs are boring! Get a Mac!" -- they show a PC in an office and a Mac on a beach with supermodels... Does anyone see the idiocy of that kind of advertising when obviously the PC has more games than the Mac AND more spreadsheets, etc. I'm not going to bother dissing Macs because we all know they themselves, as computers, may be overpriced, but are certainly excellent machines with an excellent operating system.
That said, I think the retarded ads DO work just the same as if a politician comes on TV and just accuses someone of something without proof, the accusation itself does damage.
And no, I don't think Vista is helping anything.

Not to be offensive but I don't think you understand it yourself. You were going along the right path and suddenly you started with "PC has more games than the mac AND more spreadsheets" - why does that matter? Computers are tools, use what's right for you and let the fanboys trump up that their system has more of this or less of that.
That bit of news did not help their stock price much.
That bit of news did not help their stock price much.
+1
have you Macbook Air people even seen Lenovo's latest ultraportable? you get a dvd writer for Christ's sake!
I just sensed a fanboy reaction.
Just remember that Apple/Jobs is the only place blame can be applied for that....
I truly think Bill Gates said it best when he was asked about these ads. When asked if they were appropriate or truthful his response was "that's for my customers to decide".
If you take it as a joke then that's great.
If you use it to base a purchasing decision, that's sad.
If you think there's a shred of truth to them, you're already a Mac person.
If you're an IT professional, the ads are insulting to your intelligence.
LOL, ok. I haven't smelled that level of crap since I was stationed over in Germany and drove some of the back roads through the small towns lol. That quote makes it sound like Microsoft is going to be closing shop tomorrow and Steve Jobs will be moving into the Golden Boy office in Redmond lol.
"I'm a PC"
IDIOTS, a Mac IS a PC!
Good job Apple, you proved to the public how stupid you truly are.
I tried to tell people, including Mac users, that a Mac is a PC. I don't know why but for some reason people associate PC with ONLY Windows OS. Hello! PC runs Linux, too. So when a Mac users putting down PC, they also putting down Linux, which is based off of Unix (the same OS that Mac is based off of).

Psh no a Mac isn't a personal computer, a Mac is a Macintosh get it right geez... gawd... all you PC lovers
(sarcasim)
Heck a "PC" runs OSX too... would love for someone to start commercials with "PC" (the guy in the commercials) going "hey look I run OSX also!" and the mac guy going err umm pc that isn't fair...

If peopel actually BELIEVE commercials, Apple just prove how stupid people are. =p
There are 2 types of adverts, ones that let you know about a new product and its features/price, and adverts that try to make you "feel" good about a product. Apples adverts are normally the second type (exception is the iPhone), and makes me wonder why, if their product is so great they don't just tell me more about it? which is sad for them, because their products might be good.
Amen!
silly rabbit my focus WAS on the contents as you should clearly see, I only closed with the grammar comment. YOU are essential doing what you are accusing me of doing. good one
I'm pretty sure he was referring to this:

I got nothing against Macs, but the article is just hilarious.

The real cause for Microsoft's tarnished image is all the lawsuits -- there seems to be a new anti-trust suit every day.
By buying a Mac, you're trying to get away from the Windows environment. Why would you want to run Windows on it? I understand for some people their must have apps are on Windows, but this kind of shows a lack of software avaliablity for the Mac.
Advertising that your competition is bad is an example why Apple will never be like Microsoft.
If your a hardcore gamer, you wouldn't own a Mac at all...

microsoft has always been unpopular, its their fault
the mac ads are more like insult to injury, kicking someone when there down sorta thing
the only way to get out of it? windows 7, or people hope anyways
I don't know why I'm even going to ask this, but how is Microsoft unpopular? Windows is at the top. Sure, everyone may not like Vista, but XP is still very decent itself. Let's not forget the server editions which are very nice as well as other software like Office.
Now, I don't mean to sound like a Microsoft fanboy, but the claim that they are not "popular" is wrong, going simply with numbers alone here. As something along the lines of what LTD likes to say, when you're at the top, every little stumble is magnified 1000-fold.

"unpopular" may not have been the right word
windows is the only choice for most, whether they like it or not
i would not say that makes it popular, microsoft has used vender lock in forever
its certainly one of the more "dirty" things they have done
in this regard, id would say this has lost them alot of support
as someone in this boat myself, this seems to be the case
Microsoft has always done a poor job marketing their products. When was the last time you saw an ad for Windows that was put out by Microsoft, and not by a PC vendor touting a new model (which of course runs Windows)?
Windows 7 will be a perfect opportunity for Microsoft to show off some marketing muscle.

And then when Windows 7 comes out.. booom... you have all these people saying the same **** about it that they are saying now about Vista. Once a hater, always a hater. THIS IS VISTAAAAA!! (spartan yelling voice.. ok ill shut up now)
Exactly.
It's all about the power of attack ads. A well-orchestrated smear campaign can really rip into the credibility of even a well-respected organization.
I'm not using any moral yardstick to measure Apple's actions. They're neither good nor bad. These ads are what they are, and they seem to be working. Business is business. And it's to Jobs' credit that he uses them to such great effect.
Reputation or not, the hurt can only really be measured in terms of MS' revenue. And that is impacted by a lot more than a specific competitor's particular ad campaign.
Those ads are insulting.
If Microsoft doesn't have similar advertisements it's because they have shown they dont need these low, juvenile media stunts. It's not some product (Windows 7, as many of you have mentioned) that's going to make them more popular, there will always be competitors who find a way to poke fun at them. I mean, Microsoft could find just as many ways to make fun of Apple, but it wont do so in it's advertising campaign. Microsoft may not be what you call a "good" company, but at least it had the dignity to make respectable, non-demeaning ads.
That couldn't be more true. I am open to trying new things, but those adverts make me think "well f**k you too."
Apples adverts therefore make people think something along the lines of "jee, these Apple people are annoying, think I'll stick to my tried and trusted XP." whereas Apple should try to make people think "actually they've got a point, why do I use XP?", though the adverts wouldn't be as "cool".
If you use it to base a purchasing decision, that's sad.
If you think there's a shred of truth to them, you're already a Mac person.

ok
They were witty, but now they just suck, especially now they have no content, no wit, nothing that made them charming. Apple needs a new bit, or people will get sick of it.
And people bashing Vista are just following the Five Stages of Windows Acceptance.
So pretty on the outside, so nasty on the inside...
but noooooOOoooo thats just silly
ffs fckwts!
Thats just me but as broadbad speeds increase, faster mobile access, it's just my two cents but it's coming.

I think Apple should make Mac OS for PC 2.
My PC with:
Processor: Intel® Core™ 2 Quad Q6600 ( 3.2Ghz Over clocked )
Memory: 4 GB DDR3-1333
Graphics: ATI RaedeonHD3870 X2
Hard disk: 500GB
This system cost me 800 Euro way cheaper than iMAC 1199 Euro ( not even compared to my PC )
My PC is way faster and better graphics's than Macintosh but what i think Mac's OS is better not the system.
So Apple make it for PC trust me u will see lots of people using your OS than now.
BTW my english is very bad i am very sorry.
Regards
Cashtro
