While browsing the internet this morning I happened to go to BestBuy.com. Upon loading the page I was greeted by a nice message regarding current HD DVD player owners. According to their site, Best Buy will offer a $50 gift card automatically to all people who purchased an HD DVD player from Best Buy before February 23, 2008

Best Buy's offer of a complimentary $50 gift card for each HD DVD player purchased is extended to customers who bought any of the following HD DVD products in Best Buy retail stores or online at BestBuy.com by 11:59 p.m. CST on February 22, 2008:

* Toshiba HD DVD player models:
HD-A1, HD-A2, HD-A20, HD-XA2, HD-A3, HD-A30, HD-A35
* Microsoft Xbox 360 HD DVD player accessory model 9Z5-00013

Offer excludes HD DVD-equipped computers and laptops, and so-called "dual-format" or "universal" high-definition disc player models designed to play both Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD media.

Very nice move on Best Buy's part.

Seriously - is this an advert or what?

More like a consolation for being an early user. I'd be ****ed if I'd bought a Betamax and next week every single company in the world decided to stop selling Betamax tapes.

EDIT: Pi$$ed is now censored?

Not an advert at all. Best Buy is giving away over $10,000,000 in rebates for this. That's pretty amazing as far as I'm concerned.

I didn't see it that way; if I had bought something from Best Buy, I would have been happy to be alerted of this in this way.

200,000 people bought any of these devices? or in other words, did BestBuy really sell 200,000 HD-DVD units?

Very cool of Best Buy to do. I wonder if others will follow suit?

I'm trying to remember if I bought the HD-DVD XBox 360 drive from Best Buy or not. I probably don't have the receipt anyway...

Bummer, got my 360 Add-On on 2/25 after the price drop.

It sounds like they are doing this via their computer system because it says "most customers will receive their gift card automatically". So, you might not even need the receipt. I bought my 360 add-on from Best Buy around August/September. Hopefully, they still have me in the system!

I mean, sure, it's nice and better than nothing. But it doesn't compensate for the cost of an HD DVD player.

I paid $199 when i got mine at Best Buy. That included 2 movies in the box, any 2 movies I wanted from the store, and 5 movies by mail. And on top of that they are giving me $50 back.

All of that alone paid for the player itself, plus more. So I basically paid nothing at all for the actual player.

Yep, that's what I bought from Best Buy.

Although I have no reason to complain: my Samsung BD-UP5000 plays both formats perfectly; Samsung even issues firmware updates from time to time for this device.
