Pocket-lint has learnt from sources close to the matter that Microsoft will announce the much-rumoured refresh to its mobile phone operating system, Windows Mobile, on 1 April 2008.
An improvement over Windows Mobile 6 released in February 2007 the new version, unsurprisingly named 6.1, will be a stop-gap measure to keep both consumers and industry happy until the launch of Windows Mobile 7.
Leaked screenshots of 6.1 have already done the rounds in the blogosphere, and show the system has been simplified with the screens displaying less mess than the Vista-inspired version 6. A new look with new fonts, new homescreen and new features such as a task manager and copying and pasting in Internet Explorer all bode well for users of Microsoft's OS for handhelds.

... it's even stranger when you know that the update has already been released in January and is officially available for many Windows Mobile powered devices. I have been using Mobile 6.1 now for more than 2 months.

Whats even stranger is that you think it's strange that they are releasing a 6.1 update (meaning older phones with 6.0, not new ones) since there has not been a single 6.1 official update released yet. The 6.1 "updates" are ripped from other phones that came with it.
I don't think it's strange however, that I love my HTC Titan (Sprint) with Rev. A, internal GPS, and WM6.1
Yup! Been using it on my Excalibur (T-Mobile Dash) for about a month now. Great performance and UI.

Officially probably not but check out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=355
Phones usually don't get that many updates in their lifetimes..... 1 if you're lucky but not 2.

He might need a ROM engineered for that specific phone, but it DOES NOT have to be from ATT. I have a branded T-Mobile Dash that I loaded the Excalibur WM6.1 WWE release on just fine and has worked flawlessly for weeks.

That's because this is an OS, and when you flash it to your phone, it doesn't modify the phone's radio ROM, which will have been implemented by ATT. You don't tend to update the radio, but sometimes if you do you get better signal, battery life etc.
