Carphone Warehouse has emerged as a potential suitor in the running for Tiscali, the Italian broadband operator that was put up for sale this week. A source confirmed last night that Carphone could be interested in Tiscali’s UK arm “at the right price.”

Tiscali said on Monday that it had hired JPMorgan Chase and Intesa Sanpaolo’s Banca IMI to evaluate strategic options aimed at boosting value for its shareholders. Massimo Cristofori, its chief financial officer, has said that Italy’s broadband operator would evaluate any proposal but dislikes the idea of a possible break-up of its domestic and international operations.

Monday’s announcement boosted the company’s shares, which closed up 13 per cent as investors speculated that several of its peers, including Telecom Italia and Fastweb, could bid for the group’s British or Italian operations.

Others rumoured to be interested in Tiscali’s British unit, which accounts for two thirds of overall revenue, include BT Group and Sky, although a source at BT said last night that a bid was unlikely.

I'm not surprised, it's one of the worst ISP's in the country, depending on who you ask.

Not quite... TalkTalk is the worst ISP. That's not only my opinion, it's what I hear from my customers every day.

And who owns TalkTalk? Carphone Warehouse!

Indeed. They're totally hopeless. Unfortunately I'm with them as I live with my parents, and no matter what I do to persuade them to change, they won't.

This should have a very successfully outcome - the worst and second worse ISPs in the country becoming one entity .

Note - sarcasm

I agree they are pretty awful. I have been reselling Nildram for a long time now but got a shock the other day when I found smtp.nildram.co.uk now resolves to smtp.nildram.tiscali.co.uk

Tiscali bought out Pipex ADSL Internet Services which included Pipex Broadband, Nildram and Freedom2Surf. Pipex are now GX Networks and retain their other services like 123-reg and web-fusion. Surprised you didn't know about this until recently, it's been big ISP news for quite a while. The moment I heard I jumped ship to IDNet. One of the best decision I've ever made.

I knew about Pipex eating everyone up but I didn't know about Tiscali eating Pipex

Carphone Warehouse recently bought out the UK arm of AOL as well. I'm sure the Tiscali subscribers will feel right at home with them.

Just let Tiscali die and be done with it.
#5 stezo2k on 03 Apr 2008 - 14:44
Oh well 90% of UK ISPs are rubbish anyway

Great that means Carphone Warehouse would own AOL UK, Pipex, Freedom2surf, Bulldog, Nildram, TalkTalk and Tiscali. Most of the competition gone.

At the moment

Virgin media
Sky
Talktalk/Aol (CPW)
Tiscali/pipex/homechoice
BT/Plusnet/Brightview(and subsiderys)
O2/BE*
ADSL24
UKFSN
ZEN
Orange (formally wanndo/freeserve)

And those are just the ones I can remember their names there's loads of smaller ISP's and probably some quite large ones that i've missed of that list.

look at thinkbroadband.com if you really want to see how many there are

meh...i used to be with tiscali when they used to be decent...when 512k first came out in the uk...pretty good...then the service gradually declined and we got near dialup speeds......moved to homecall then talktalk- THE worst ISP ever in the UK!...anyways now with Sky who are absolutley great (8meg consistent)

Hi,

Here is the reason they are interested:

"evaluate strategic options aimed at boosting value for its shareholders"

which is probably not in the best interests of customers of Tiscali or their other ISP's (AOL UK etc)

The customer service which all of these companies is frankly bloody awful and Tiscali is no better.

Perhaps they are good for other after all! :-)

Kind Regards

Simon
