Paul Thurrott has posted a screenshot gallery of Windows 7, you know -the one that was handed to developers back in December 2007; well for those who have been living under a rock and haven't seen them yet, follow the link below.

"... A few weeks back, the first external build of Windows 7, the next version of Windows, fell into my hands. I installed it initially in just a virtual machine and took hundreds of shots, and that's what you're looking at here. Essentially, Windows 7 build 6519--dating back to December 2007--is just a slightly enhanced version of Windows Vista.

My guess--and at this point, it's just a guess--is that things will change more significantly over time. But even in this early build, a number of interesting developments emerge. I'll have more to say about that in the days ahead. For now, enjoy this first screenshot gallery. It won't be the last."

Vista is a boring disappointment... I switched to Linux and now I feel the fun in an OS again.

From what I have seen from the shots, its just more of the same... boring and gay GUI

Of course it looks the same. They haven't designed the UI yet Vista looked like XP until M2 or something.

Exactly, these are like very early alpha builds. Not even M1 yet. Or wait, probably M1 now since this build is from December.

"boring and gay GUI"

Really? And how can you tell that it's not straight? Is it coming on to you? Is it trying to get you into bed with it?

Oh wait.... Hang on.... Actually, Windows 7 doesn't even have a gender, so it's impossible for it to be gay or straight.

Interesting observation though. Please be sure to tell Microsoft that you felt same-sex sexual advances from their early build of Windows 7. I'm sure they will appreciate that feedback as much as Neowin does!

ROFLMAO! Nice!

I understood what he was saying, but I agree with you; there were more appropriate terms that could have been used.

Wow... talk about overreacting... granted its pretty immature to call something gay... but man, get over it.

Me installed linux, and it was very but veryy boring, nothing like Vista,if you think you can make black anti-MS propaganda you dont have a life, and it won't work.

How exactly, can an inanimate object such as a piece of software, be gay?

I think by "Gay" he means "Happy" which is the original definition of the word..

How he can tell it is happy is beyond me though.
#1.9 brianshapiro on 05 Apr 2008 - 13:29
SonicSam

Actually, 'gay' had a meaning as a negative insult before it referred to homosexuals. People who get puffed up in offense don't even need to know the history of the word, because they just need a cause to make them feel righteous

It is immature to mock something as 'gay' or 'lame', though that has nothing to do with what the word means

those screenshots are fake. look at the search bar and the task bar, they have been badly photoshoped. the colours dont even blend in.

Look at the some of those extra features, that he said have been added and they look blurry and not crisp so i say its photoshopped. Also if he did get to try out windows 7 wudnt microsoft tell him not to post anything?
#2.3 TRC on 04 Apr 2008 - 08:52
So resizing and saving them as lossy jpegs couldn't have anything to do with that? He may not always be right but he doesn't post fakes.

yeh but the rest of the image is fine and good quality where as the search bar and taskbar and the windows 7 ultimate text look out of place.

It's still a very early build, everything isn't going to look neat and polished yet.
#2.7 Jugalator on 04 Apr 2008 - 10:04
Agreed, since this is such an early build, the "polish" you might see here could have come from a developer in a hurry, pasting in a Windows 7 logo over something else. There is very little quality assurance going on. Mostly just to make things run and work well enough for testers to provide feedback, but to hell with UI polish...

You have no idea if they are fake, so there's no need to boldly state something you have no proof for. I cannot believe Paul Thurrot would put up fake shots on his site; he is a well-respected and reputable source for Windows information. Just because screenshots have JPG artifacts in them doesn't mean their fake. Have you ever posted screenshots on your website? And what does colours blending in have to do with proving they are photoshopped?

I never understood or understand the problem people have with Paul Thurrott. To me, he's a great guy. He knows his stuff. And to my mind there's not even a hint that he's done something or held an opinion that warrants the vitriol that I've seen targeted at him.

Give the guy a break (a general statement). He's just doing his job.

These screenshots are simply not fake. I think anyone who knows anything about Paul Thurrott as a writer knows this well enough.

old news. Unless we can find something PT posted in his poorly compressed JPEGs that were not revealed in those other 100 foreign Chinese/German/etc sites who, surprise, use PNGs or high quality JPEGs.

This is a huge misrepresentation of what is being done in Windows 7. What you're seeing in these screenshots is essentially the Vista front-end (plus a few aesthetic changes) with the completely revamped kernel base WinMin.

It's a bit too early to see the differences between Vista and Seven: we'll get screenshots to have seizures with in the future.

They don't start working on the visual changes until later. Vista started out looking just like XP, then it eventually became the nauseating yellow-green-blue gradient madness you see today.
(1 reply) #7 hapbt on 04 Apr 2008 - 13:10
winmin isnt even necessarily going to be part of windows 7, its just a new project that MS are experimenting with.
everyone just ass-u-med that minwin would be in windows 7 since microsoft said something about it.
i agree i can't see paul thurrot putting fake screenshots up, he has nothing to gain from doing so, of all people.

Parts of the WinFS technology is already in Vista, true it's not the whole thing they talked about. But bits are there already, and even more in the newer version of SQL Server.

Though it's cool what you could do with organizing your data with WinFS, many like myself manage to keep track and organize our data just fine.

Exactly, WinFS was an interesting experiment, but it just is not useful to most people. Different is not always better. Some people love to bring this up in their silly attacks on vista, but they tried it and decided it was not very good, for good reason imo.

Do you even know what WinFS was?

many like myself manage to keep track and organize our data just fine.

As I understand it, WinFS wasn't really an end user feature. It didn't so much have to do with you organizing your data as it did with giving developers the tools to replace traditional file or database datastores with the WinFS store.

Speaking as someone who's been in this sort of business, Many times Version numbers aren't updated until it gets into beta stage and/or final release. What your seeing here is just build increments.

Vista is not as bad as people are saying "IF" you have a good enough PC to run it... cause i switched to Vista recently and i would rather not go back to XP just cause i like the feel of Vista.

my specs are... AMD Athlon 3500+ 64bit CPU (2.2ghz overclocked to 2409mhz) - Geforce 7900GT 256MB video card - 2GB DDR400 Ram (4x 512MB) etc etc

I've run Vista on a 2ghz single core intel pentium 4 cpu with 512MBs of RAM, Vista is not as bad as 'people' are saying even if you don't have a modern (last 4 years) PC. These vista bashers are simply frustrated losers that see Vista as the end to any fading dream they had of their pet OS taking over, so expect them to bash it as often as possible for that reason.

Windows 7 is gonna be great! Core2 technology is gonna be the next northwood by the end of this year and we'll all have no reason not to own something as cheap as 75 dollars for a CPU and 25 dollars for 1gigabyte of RAM that is obviously 100% able to run Vista... seeing as how I'm able to run it on garbage canterwood chipsets and northwood CPUs. yes... this is going to be great.

Looks exactly like Windows Vista, I was hoping they'd finally make a true 3D desktop, maybe make all their versions using dreamscene and such other features, we know it'll probably require 4GB and a good GPU anyways, might as well make it worth upgrading for in a couple of years.
#21.1 TRC on 04 Apr 2008 - 22:14
You do realize that the interface design is the last thing they work on right? Every new version of Windows starts out looking like the previous ones. Windows 95 looked like Windows 3.1 in the early builds, XP looked like 2000, Vista looked like XP, etc.

Microsoft has been working on their new OS for a decade or more. 100% manged C. Can't wait. No it wont be Windows 7!! Parts of it have been talked about in the last few years over at their research site. So yeah they have been working a new OS for way more than a mere 3 years. Of course we may never see it!

Anyhow, I'm sure Windows 7 will suck even more!! Mainly because it seems most of Microsoft's effort is being put into paid subscription services. Wont it be a great day! Windows 7 will only cost you $500 plus another major hardware upgrade and then oh yeah to get anything useful out of it, you also have to buy subscription(s). Sounds like my kind of OS! Sounds like Microsoft is starting to put themselves out of business!! haha Yeah right! Got to love roomers!

It's way to early to comment. Right now they're just adding minor tweaks and testing out the feedback mechanism. I'm pretty sure they'll surprise us later on, pleasant or not, as they've always done in the past.

I just hope it isn't going to come on a Blu-ray disk and require a 100GB partition to install.
#26 cropcircles on 07 Apr 2008 - 04:35
Gutted out Vista. My inclination is 7 will be more like a streamlined home version of Windows Server 2008. Thats what they had backwards with Vista. Turned off services by default, ie,. WS2008
#27 jjrambo on 09 Apr 2008 - 02:14
Windows 7 will use same driver model as Vista. The changes will be regarding to security, UI, and of course new IE, WMP etc...

I can say that Windows 7 to Vista will be as Windows XP was to Windows 2000.
