News Corp. May Join Yahoo Bid With Microsoft

Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation is in talks with Microsoft about joining in its contested bid for Yahoo, according to people involved in the discussions. The combination, which would join Yahoo, Microsoft’s MSN and News Corporation’s MySpace, would create a behemoth that would upend the Internet landscape.

The talks are a surprising twist in the two-month-long takeover story that began when Microsoft made a $44.6 billion bid for Yahoo. Yahoo has resisted Microsoft’s overtures, contending that it will not negotiate unless Microsoft raises its offer. Yahoo, which wants to remain independent, has been in a desperate search for white knights, holding conversations with Time Warner’s AOL and News Corporation.

If News Corporation throws its weight behind Microsoft’s offer, that could allow Microsoft to raise its bid, putting even more pressure on Yahoo and its shareholders. At the same time, the alignment of Microsoft and News Corporation would remove a possible alternative for Yahoo, leaving it with fewer opportunities to escape Microsoft’s grasp.

"...would create a behemoth that would upend the Internet landscape."

compared to the current behemoth of Google?

Microsoft immediately blasted the idea of a search advertising partnership between Yahoo and Google, saying it would be anticompetitive.

Pot calling the kettle black?

I don't think it is.

But I'd like to see Microsoft explain how that would be anticompetitive given that their offer wouldn't be.

Lisa: Wow, Dad, you're surfing like a pro!
Homer: Oh, yeah! I'm betting on Jai-alai in the Cayman Islands, I invested in something called "News Corp"
Lisa: Dad, that's Fox!
Homer: [shrieks] Undo! Undo! [hits key, sighs]

I'm not surprised Murdoch wants to join in - MySpace has been abandoned in favour of Facebook. All I get now through MySpace is adds from girls in bikinis linking to commercial sites or adds from randoms bands. Plus you have to login every time and everywhere is covered in ads and sponsored links. Facebook is a lot cleaner, has better photo tagging and works better for events (organising parties is much more convenient).

While I don't like the idea of a deal like this they are all terrible at what they do - there is the prospect of combining them to form something that ISN'T an abomination. I just pray it doesn't form a super monopoly, as Murdoch is a disgusting character that cannot be trusted an inch.

Don't Microsoft have a slice of Facebook. Seems a bit strange to go with MySpace.

I don't believe it, we was only talking about this in the office the other day over a cup of morning coffee and I happened to bring this up... and somebody else said "Yeah probably right there, if he comes in he will probably try to out-do Microsoft." Personally as a person Rupert Murdoch is a complete and utter a*****e he's a ruthless businessman with a fat wallet and the person responsible for me loosing SkyOne the b*****d.

Interesting Neowin has no protection against swear words for pig-slang or back-slang...? Which means I could say this...?
