MacBook Air spurring LED use in screens

Advertisement (Why?)
The MacBook Air has become the best advertisement for why companies should use LED (light-emitting diode) backlights in notebook screens, and is driving adoption, according to market researcher DisplaySearch.

LED backlights in display screens are an improvement over old CCFL (cold-cathode florescent lamps) technology for several reasons, including a stunning picture due to more vibrant contrasts, better power savings, and they're easier on the environment because they contain no mercury and last longer. They also helped make the MacBook Air a marvel of thinness because they take up less space inside a screen. LED backlights are about half as thick as CCFL backlights, according to Luke Yao, an analyst at DisplaySearch.

you should know by now that history is always rewritten to make sure apple was the first to do something :p

LOL
The worst of all is that Apple's fans believe it!

Maybe you should read the article before trolling. It says nothing about Apple being the first. It only says that the Air is the best advertisement for using LEDs.

The MacBook Air didn't start the trend to using LED backlights, but its stunningly thin design will prompt other companies to put out similar notebooks, Yao said, further spurring the LED industry.

Other companies did it first, but Apple is the only one people and the media pay any real attention too hence the "best advertisement" line in the article.

Maybe you should read what you posted. dell has been putting led screens in their notebooks before the air was even announced . The air is not prompting other companies to do this so the article is still horrible and completely ignoring other companies.

I bought my inspiron 1520 almost a year ago when it was announced and had an led screen option so why is it that this article states that apple is spurring the adoption when dell has had these screens in its notebooks for a while and they are also a big company that non techies look at to buy computers.

I believe Sony was the first to use LED screens, incorporating it in their TX series notebooks. That said, Dell was really the first to say they were using LED screens in the Inspiron series and then later the XPS line.

But you miss the point. The point isn't that Apple was first. It is only saying that the Air is getting more press and spurring more adoption. Whether or not Dell had it first is not important because their laptops with LEDs didn't get the same kind of press as the Air did. If the Air deserves that press is also not important. I personally don't think it is that great, but I am all for the results of everyone moving to using LEDs.

The whole point of the article was though to say how apple is leading the way with leds which is not. My whole point is that the article is a troll post and shouldnt have even been posted to neowin.

I totally agree! if you name Apple and say it wasn't the first you must (and I do mean MUST as a practice towards being professional journalist/writer) name the companies that were first.

This article suggests that (without any objective evidence) Apple mainstreaming the LED lights when in fact, Apple are just another brand to use an already growing technology.

#4 1759 on 18 Apr 2008 - 16:52
Wow, who ever was writing up the article was desperate for readers apparently - LED screen were going to happen with or without Apple, but lets toss in an Apple reference anyway..

It's more of a case of the MBA occurring because of LED screens, then the other way around, as the LED allow for thinner designs.

Want hits - publish an Apple reference, or a Vista bashing article!

What tripe. The article doesn't say apple was the first but this statement
The MacBook Air has become the best advertisement for why companies should use LED (light-emitting diode) backlights in notebook screens, and is driving adoption

by not mentioning other companies like Sony and Dell who adopted this tech first leads people on. And to say that its "driving adoption" of a tech that WAS already adopted and WOULD be even if apple never did is just as full of sh8 as those stupid commercials. This place is becoming more of a propaganda machine rather that a newsworthy source

This is Neowin, what else you expect? expecting quality news from this place, would be like expecting in depth analysis over at FoxNews.

This isn't sarcasm: Where would be a better place to read good tech news and have it discussed by people who know what their talking about, especially over a whole range of subjects? I've been here for around 5 years, and if I see a news item that I perceive not to be news or not to be interesting, I just don't click. I ignore at *least* 25% of the posts on the front page.

If there is another neowin out there, or something similar, (perhaps with 'quality' news, ;-) ) I'd LOVE to know, because then I'd have two places to frequent.

Please post a link.

Apple certainly isn't the first. But that won't stop people from accusing others from copying Apple, foolish as they will sound.

Bring on the LED Monitors! Can we finally get rid of the crap we call LCD? I'm just waiting for those monitors to go to hell.
#7.1 XerXis on 18 Apr 2008 - 21:59
i think you are confusing OLED with LCD screens with led backlights
#7.3 Shadow Dragon on 19 Apr 2008 - 22:41
Heh, you can get DLPs with LED technology and those are ridiculously cheap and deliver awesome picture quality.
(1 reply) #8 LTD on 18 Apr 2008 - 23:47
The MacBook Air is an interesting and apparently desirable product. It's incredibly thin, looks great, and runs OS X.

Which makes it more interesting than your average notebook, no matter what the specs.

Cool design + OS X = different from the rest.

This is what it takes to turn heads and get noticed. Ergo, it gets more attention, which in turn invariably includes discussion about its display, or at least it being acknowledged as a standard-setter, or at least trend setter in one area or another.

It gets the attention, one of them always does, and therefore it's seen as spearheading (not necessarily pioneering) the adoption of one of its included technologies.

Other companies are not mentioned, because Apple seems to be the one serving up this existing technology in a more desirable or unique form.

Do you all get it now, kids??
#8.1 starless.bible.black on 19 Apr 2008 - 00:02
sorry, but I still don't accept it. It's because it's Apple. It has nothing to do with "spearheading the adoption". And I agree that somebody is trying to put this into the wrong context to drive Apple just into this position. All we have to do is mention a new technology (doesn't matter who pioneered it) and Apple in one paragraph and the rest of the world "knows" Apple came up with something "new".

that's exactly why I start hating Neowin news. Apple=Cool; Microsoft=Evil

verdammt und zugenäht!

I'm so tired of hearing THIN THIN THIN. What do we have? Anorexic PCs?

I replaced a CRT with an LCD, so now I have an LCD and a bunch of desk space that's gradually collecting dust. I can stick a peripheral behind there, if I don't mind being unable to reach it.

Thin did not make it better.

Thin does not make the MacBook Air any more usable-- it takes up just as much space on a desk as a similarly-screen-sized three-spindle notebook.

Now, some aspects of the LED-backlight appeal to me. Wider colour gamut, and potential for much better (although still fundamentally limited) dynamic contrast controls.

But still, wake me when we get to a 24", 1920x1200 OLED display for $399.99.

OMG finally this is so great people are starting to get annoyed with all this obvious CRAPPLE propaganda. Thier way of thinking and the way thier users/lovers think is 10 % naive 90% retarded. As with alomost everything Apple is "spearheading" they did not come up with this but instead took/stole the idea and just repackaged it and put some spin on it and obviously this writer just eats up apple crap and regurgitates it. Mindless zombies = apple fans = apples plan = 'people with IQs above retarded getting annoyed'.

PS you cannot remove my comments cuz if you do then remove this article and all the countless other ones with pro-apple brain washing and well be square.

Apple is rarely the first to do something, but it almost always does it the best, which is why I'm a fanboy!
(1 reply) #12 wase4711 on 20 Apr 2008 - 11:53
"Crapple" propaganda?
Why is it propaganda when a company uses new technology, and releases a product that most people like?

I've been a 25 year Wintel user, who recently switched to a Mac Pro desktop and a Mac lappy, and I can say that now I see what all the buzz has been about...

The fact that the Microsoft fanboys are really starting to scream and do their best to slam anything Apple only proves the fact that Apple is really making an impact in the Electronic world, and it makes them nervous.
All I can say is don't knock it until you try it!
