Soviet Union Domain Still Kicking

Advertisement (Why?)
The Soviet Union may be in the dustbin of history, but sixteen years after the superpower's collapse, Web sites ending in the Soviet ".su" domain name have been rising. Registrations increased 45% this year alone as bloggers, entrepreneurs and die-hard communists all acted as part of a small but growing online community resisting repeated efforts to extinguish the online Soviet outpost. Many Web entrepreneurs also see potential profits in the domain, grabbing instantly recognizable names already claimed in other, better known domains. Vladimir Khramov, a network administrator from Moscow, said he bought "microsoft.su" last year simply to acquire an easy-to-remember ending for his e-mail address.

The Internet's key oversight agency, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), and its predecessors have made several efforts since the 1990s to eliminate the ".su" address, though all failed. In late 2006, ICANN even sought advice from the community on how best to revoke outdated suffixes. Yet the resistance continued, and the phase-out seems to be in a stalemate. The domain continues to work normally, but listed in records as "being phased out." "There are no technical issues," said John Crain, ICANN's chief technical officer. "It all comes down to politics."

Actually, it is more ironic since it is a US military project. Regardless, the Soviet Union existed when it first started up, and they were assigned a TLD just like any other country.

Capitalism is not the irony.

The irony is that the U.S. government needed a computer to control its nuclear missiles. Obviously, such computer would be the first target and to go around this, they created a network to avoid vulnerability of a single computer.

HTTP, however, was an international project and lots of R&D came from Europe.

The internet as we know it today was made by international scientists to help send and share information between research, universities and other academic studies. It was intended to bring everyone close together without being restricted by money, politics, etc. In essence it was a socialist creation. If it was capitalist then you would need to pay for everything you do on the internet... possibly pay for every single website or something... like a magazine store... each site being a magazine in a way. Sadly, this is somewhat coming true due to all the ISP's battling and the US government trying to dictate who can and cant have access to this freedom of information.

Well, yes, the internet as we now know it. But before that it was more-or-less created by the US Military (or Government). And I do consider that irony.

By definition it can't be socialist, because it's not under social or state control. Also you are mistaken on everything being free and not capitalist, considering all the ads on this very site and almost all the other websites on the web which is just like all the magazines out there.
Everything doesn't have to be for profit in capitalist economy, it's only requirement is that people are left on their own devices. Private control over property is the capitalist way and using your property for profit or nonprofit goals is your own choice to make.
Also consider that capitalism brings people together through trade and exchange of commodities just like we exchange information on the internet.

Individualism: a social theory favoring freedom of action for individuals over collective or state control.
Socialism: a political and economic theory of social organization that advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.

I bet this guy never heard of a term called 'trade mark' and not only that he would in the end loose that domain but also some money.

I say they reuse it for something else, like a country that starts with Su for its name. Thus, no revoking.

That country is the Soviet Union! the Russian federation is a scam... I mean first they go back to the USSR national anthem but with different words , then they nationalize the entire oil and gas industry (its controlled by Putin and his friends) , then they begin to threat on every NATO move and increasing weapon sales again to Syria , Iran and even North Korea.

They tried to choke the gas pipe from Georgia, passed threats to the Ukraine... no doubt, wont be long before they invade something to annex it.

US is a scam. They have a history of invading every imaginable country killing all opposition (along with most population) in placing a puppet government. Just look at recent history. And you say Russia is bad. Stop looking at the world through pink glasses issued by Uncle Sam.

Can someone who's not as lazy as I find the Simpsons clip where the Russian ambassador to the UN presses a button and his sign flips over to say "Soviet Union" and all the parade floats in Moscow turn into tanks and tractors again?

Seriously, I'd actually say the net benefit on the world of the Soviet Union was substantially positive. It forced a sense of balance-- nobody could get too cocky or assertive without the risk of incurring the wrath of at least one superpower.

You don't have to look through pink glasses to see that US is actually right and justified, you just need to suffer through all the great effects that the Socialist People's governments have to offer. If you don't get it, then I'm not an American and am grateful towards US for it's defense of liberty in the Cold War.

I'm from Israel and both links don't work here as well. So I guess it's not censorship.

I'd actually love to own a .su domain. They're not very popular and easy to remember, but i can't find a single decent registrar that'll sell one for a reasonable amount (The ONE I found wanted like $300 for a single .su domain).

Seriously, if anyone here knows a good, cheap registrar for .su domains, let me know.

Here's one that seems to charge $60 per year.

Just Google for "buy/purchase .su domain" if you need more options
