eBay Considering Skype Sell

According to comments from John Donahoe, who took over popular online auction site eBay at the end of last month, the company will consider selling off its Skype internet phone subsidiary at the end of this year if it fails to find ways to use the fast-growing service to support its core e-commerce business. Donahoe's statement is the most direct indication yet that Ebay is thinking of scrapping the under-performing acquisition; it paid $3.1 billion, but wrote down the value of the business by $1.4 billion last year after concluding it would not match earlier hopes.

"What we're testing this year are the synergies," Mr Donahoe told the Financial Times this week after Ebay reported its latest earnings. "If the synergies are strong, we'll keep it in our portfolio. If not, we'll reassess it." That could lead to the disposal of the business, he indicated.

They should auction it on eBay

Wonder if we'll see Google picking it up. They don't usually buy big companies (YouTube excepted), but I think it could fit in at Google (business style. Microsoft might try for it too. Yahoo could just to try to devalue themselves a bit more.

Must be great to be working at Skype right now Best way to get rid of your staff is to put the threat of a massive relocation/integration over their heads. Well, that or firing them of course.

I'd really like to see Skype get bought by Microsoft. They need to focus more on VOIP and video chat in WLM, and if they had Skype, they'd be able to do that.

Figures, they finally admit it was a rush of blood to the head purchase which obviously has no place being owned by an auction company. Sell it to someone who will actually use and improve it.

I'd buy that for a dollar!

I never understood why they bought it in the first place

I agree, I think it was some late "dot com" stupidity thing... It was hard to see back then how their businesses would work in a "synergy"... An auction site and an Internet telephony platform? What?

I wonder what their plans were... :-S

Me neither. eBay has stuck to it's core competency (online auctions and selling), so why the heck would they buy a service that's totally unrelated????

Skype is my home phone, but if Google buys them I will NEVER use Skype again!

Racist is an overused term. Some are using it where it has absolutely no baring. To continue to do so will eventually make it lose all meaning.

i wish google would buy it... would be amazing... to link skype and gtalk together.. to get skype working directly from gmail... to get gtalk sending sms's... to get voice chat incorporated with google docs, to talk to a group whilst giving an online presentation....

Now that would be cool

Wouldn't be surprised if Google buys it. All they need to do is combine it with GrandCentral.

i wouldn't use it again if they sell out to google. nokia buying them would be ok for me. i absolutely dont want to have anything to do with google (except anonymous search of course).
#9.1 Dogward on 20 Apr 2008 - 08:37
I'm all for nokia too, but It's just a (very) wild guess/wish, lol.
#9.2 eAi on 20 Apr 2008 - 11:11
I don't see nokia (or any other handset maker) buying it. That'd put them in serious conflict with the network operators.

When the word 'synergy' is used, a company is in trouble
#10.1 eAi on 20 Apr 2008 - 11:11
Even worse when they say 'If the synergies are strong'

...and the stars are in uranus...

Sounds too much like horoscope than business sense. Why can't someone put their hand up and say what all of us were thinking "Ebay and Skype? Together? That makes absolutely no bloody sense..."

True, that was my first reaction; then again, they could turn it into the way to bring together buyers and sellers via Skype; selling Skype to online sellers who could use it as their primary business phone. There are many variances of that, but I don't think it really helps Ebay's selling model at all.
#11 vetneufuse on 20 Apr 2008 - 18:27
Bidding starts at 99 cents... any takers?

anyways, jokes aside... I never understood why ebay wanted skype... yeah voice chat with a seller seems ok, but in pratice not so great
#12 Doli on 20 Apr 2008 - 19:17
^^ if ebay put skype on bid that would be cool

Got to say I have never been a fan of skype, I don't like monopolies in technology, lack of choice (in that skypes protocols are not OS) makes skype a no go area in my book, I would much rather have a SIP phone that I can use on multiple networks and pick and choose the best tariffs and features rather than be limited what what skype can give me.

I now have 5 separate lines of two providers all with local area code numbers, 2 for London/UK, 1 for Milan/Italy and 2 for Cagliari/Italy (Where I'm based) a virtual switchboard for my hosting business and all have voicemail. I use three Ericsson Gigaset 450 IP phones which are DECT connected to one base-station which can have up to 8 VOIP lines and a land line.

I use the skype service on a phone.

would be ashamed if it closed. But maybe www.magicjack.com might be an alternative to cheap VOIP services.

without the hassle of setting up an Asterix box
#15 Shiranui on 21 Apr 2008 - 04:13
I don't care who buys it, as long as the service remains as good as, or gets better than, it is now.

Skype has saved me a fortune on Overseas calls.

Google?!!? Ha ha ha, please. They already know every word of your e-Mail do you really want them knowing every word of your phone conversations?

Google. Fighting online privacy since... well, ever.
