The UK is a nation of broadband speed freaks, according to figures released by broadband comparison site Top 10 Broadband. Based on over 90,000 tests captured in March, the monitoring site said that download speeds seems to be the primary factor in deciding customer satisfaction.

The top three fastest providers were also the three highest rated in terms of customer satisfaction. O2 topped the rankings in terms of speed and customer ratings, with an average speed of 6.41Mbps and customer rating of 3.82 out of 5. Second and third for speed and rating were Be and Virgin Media respectively.

6.41Mbps is still damn slow. I want 10MB/s (100Mbit).

I have 16 and sometimes it touches 18, how do you feel now in the e-penis stakes?

The fact that the top customer rating is 3.82/5 shows just how poor our broadband is really You'd expect at least 4 for the best customer satisfaction...

O2 actually bought out Be. So they are really the same company.

Did they?,I always thought Be was 1st with broadband & always was a subsiduary of O2 & recently O2 decided to have a O2 broadband named service so O2 could do their own bundling service/s & there were never any buy outs/mergers whatever.

6.41Mbps? And O2 came first for that?

Odd... I'm with Virgin media and get 20Mbps... they must have really downscored for customer service! :o

They're probably talking about ADSL broadband specifically anot not broadband in general (which would include ADSL & cable)

Yeah the ADSL for virgin media can't be included or as soon as peak time comes your speed tumbles.... to almost nothing at times.(has improved in recent weeks mind)

I dont think they will be on about ADSL specifically as I doubt they have any way of testing whether you are cable or ADSL, VM will just be clumped together. Either way even on 20Mb at times my speeds are atrocious, and using bandwidth monitors (I have tried most of them) I have an average on them all of around 2.5Mb which sounds about right on that report. VM do not offer the best speeds unfortunately and even calling them they still say "its upto 20Mb" they forget to say "except when we decide to throttle you for downloading a demo and a few trailers off xbox live"

I'm on a 1.5mbps dsl connection in the US. 8mbps is offered in my area via Cable. However, my 1.5mbps has no data caps and isn't under a crappy EULA like what we have here with Comcast. I would rather have a slow no-cap connection than a fast connection with a cap.

My god..... 3 meg broadband..... I used to be on 512k up until early January, then they upgraded me to the new 3megabyte line.

I could only dream of a 10 megabyte line where I live. Because it has to come over telephone line and the quality of the line is bad, it means I get poor broadband speeds >.<;

Bring on the fiber-optic to every house in the country so we can have 20meg broadband

Let the revolution begin

I cant dream about more than I can have. Im on 512k, and its alright for me.

The reason the fastest companies got the best feedback rating was because generally in the UK many companies sell you one speed, but give you a speed much lower and saying its not their fault.

Some companies such as BT cap speeds when torrents are being used and other data transfer that takes advantage of high speed connections. So essentially anyone who pays for a high speed connection from one of these companies, cant use it for anything that really needs a high speed connection (pointless?). Companies like Virgin cable dont do this (and I presume O2 and Be also dont), this means when their customers pay for their connection speed they aren't being cheated so they are happy.

I get 6 down with at&t for 35 bucks, I'm not complaining...it's a hell of a lot more stable than mediacom

Speed freaks? define speed......

UK internet is a joke.

I've had a 100M line for over 3 years now for about 15 quid a month.
#10.1 mikey on 29 Apr 2008 - 10:20
They're saying we choose our internet connections based on speed, not quality of service or anything else.

The standard broadband in the UK at the moment is 8MBit ADSL over a BT Phone line. 16MBit ADSL is available, but is quite expensive (comparatively).
If you are in a Cable area, the standard is 4MBit, but 20MBit is available (which i've got ). The 4MBit cable has a 1MBit cap if you download more than 750MB after 4PM and before 12AM (when it resets)

UK internet is a joke in many ways main reasons are:

Price

So called unlimited broadband, except thats not true because the majority of ISP's impose at least 1 type of restriction, usually a cap on the amount you can download it total,if you go over that your ISP gives you warnings/charges you extra per GB or whatever, other kinds of restrictions include a traffic system where by your ISP really limits your download speed during certain times of the day,Virgin are known to do this.

The speeds we are told we can get & what we actually get.

All 3 of the above compared to other places in the world is crazy.

Also the internet infrastructure over here is taking ages to upgrade.
