AT&T is planning to put some extra shine on the even sleeker new Apple iPhone.

When the 3G iPhone is introduced this summer, AT&T, the exclusive U.S. iPhone sales partner with Apple, will cut the price by as much as $200, according to a person familiar with the strategy.

AT&T is preparing to subsidize $200 of the cost of a new iPhone, bringing the price down to $199 for customers who sign two-year contracts, the source says. Apple is expected to have two versions of the new iPhone, an 8-gigabyte-memory and a 16-gigabyte-memory model with price tags widely expected to be $399 and $499.

AT&T and Apple declined to comment.

hehe.. this should be fun. I saw this over on hofo and was wondering if everyone is going to throw another fit over that

This will probably cost lots of iPhone returns in the coming weeks

It's quite good of AT&T, however, I don't know how Apple will see it (if they can go after people selling iPods cheaper in the UK, they're not going to like this).

I can also guarantee this wont happen with O2 in the UK - especially with the current "Buy then activate" system - as many people don't sign for the contracts. I'm just glad I got my 8GB one in the UK while it was £169 - especially when the 3G coverage around here is so crappy

I get 3G nearly every where I go unless I have a low signal.

Att has their own prepaid service so all you have to do is buy an iphone from apple and then sign up with prepaid .I am not sure you will get all the features of the iphone doing it this way though.

I have the pre-paid ATT and I love it so far forces me to use it less and not over spend ever. You will not get the extra
features of the phone with the pre-paid unless you opt to pay for them. Only feature I have and need is the ability to make calls. I don't care currently for text messages but the web access on the iphone would be neat I guess

Crap... I just signed a 2-year contract. Does that mean I can't participate in this until it's over?

Nope I work for AT&T and you can buy an iPhone at the lowest price at anytime regardless of contract length remaining. However, it will restart your contract for two years from the day to activate.

Not that I'm calling you a liar but is there any proof that you can show me that this is true so I can have proof myself when this issue comes up with my local AT&T store. I would extremely appreciate this because I've always been told that I cannot get the 'new contract' pricing because I have to wait until my current contract expires...

thanx

Yea, that is great news Veritas... but as with IceTheGreat I would like to see if that is in writing anywhere so that I can bring it up. I wouldn't mind restarting my contract for a new 2-years but I'm afraid that may not be the case. Here is hoping that I'm wrong though!

As a customer, I'm pretty sure they'll work with you. AT&T has been great about that, in my opinion. Back when I had their DSL, any time I saw a new advertisement for maybe $5 less a month, I jumped on the phone and called them up.

I'm glad you have had a great AT&T experience but I on the other hand, have had the exact opposite on all fronts (DSL, Phone service, and now cellphone service) and there's nothing more frustrating that knowing that your right on a situation and that they think they know what they are doing and you end up being "wrong" and you leaving the store without the $200 iphone...wont let myself go through that type of situation again, unless i have something to back myself up.

Well, I don't know why you're asking here then. Best thing to do would be to actually call them. Can't go wrong when it comes straight from the horse's mouth.

Then again, we already have a horse here.

Sounds good to me, but I won't be replacing my iPod Touch any time soon.
#6 Ajapi on 30 Apr 2008 - 20:05
This would be absolutely fantastic. $200, even if it's for a 4GB version, would make this the hottest selling phone ever :p
#7 MGS4-SS on 30 Apr 2008 - 22:56
I would spend the $200 in a snap!

I spent $200 back when the Razr launched (I'm such a dumb idiot), it would be stupid not to do so for the iPhone.

So when do the iPhone kiddies get their next rebate from steve jobs for the price drop
#8.1 Nose Nuggets on 01 May 2008 - 00:50
hopefully never. crap like that sets a bad example. early adopters need to realize that high prices are a function of early adoptions. so many people paying high prices is what drives the prices down to begin with. but its not really a rebate anyway, its an apple gift card. so you can buy more apple stuff.

If this turns out to be true I will be buying 2 iphones, 1 8gb and 1 16gb. Though I hope they have a 32gb version. That screen begs for movies and those need more space.
Or better yet make it thicker and tack on the 160gb ipod drive. Now that I could use!
#9.1 TEX4S on 01 May 2008 - 03:06
Yeah , cuz movies on a 2.5" screen is so awesome !!!
#9.2 excalpius on 01 May 2008 - 03:49
I found the iPod Touch's screen fine for an airplane flight...and, well, that's about it. I love it as a music player and it works remarkably well as an art portfolio, but without a video out port of any kind, it's not much of a video player.

I hope the 2 year contract crap the US has to put up with doesn't come over to the UK. The 18 month took ages to come across, but now it is here I fecking hate it.

2 years with the same phone sucks and I will stop getting contracts if it becomes the norm here. I would rather pay a bit more and get a 12 month contract, but no, O2 don't give that option and shaft you with 18 months for the iPhone (which I do have as no other decent option).

You don't have to keep the same phone. You just have to stick with the phone company for 2 years. you can buy and change the phone as often as you want with verizon, but need to pay an activation fee. I think AT&T is even easier as you just need to buy a phone and move the sim card.
#12 Dakkaroth on 01 May 2008 - 10:32
This is good news. 2 year contract aside, I really didn't find the iPhone to be worth no $400. At least $200 seems more reasonable.
#13 J400uk on 01 May 2008 - 15:34
I think without the contract about 300US is a fair price, but if there tiening you into a long expensive cotnract at the same time and therefore stop people been able to skip activation and unlock, the phone should really be free.
