Dell, a leading supplier of personal computers, denied media report about intentions to axe its XPS brand to concentrate solely on Alienware personal computers for gamers. Nevertheless, the company confirmed that it intends to invest heavily into Alienware in order to enable systems with unprecedented performance. While XPS is set to remain, it may no longer be only a gamers’ brand.

“Dell XPS and Alienware are both great brands – arguably the greatest brands in PC gaming – and both will live on. But we are going to expand our focus on Alienware. We are going to invest like crazy in product development, design and engineering to propel Alienware as the premier gaming brand in the future,” said Dell’s spokeswoman Anne M. Camden.

Well, I can't see them keeping these two brands as separate entities for ever. In reality they are competing brands, which no doubt will just confuse the buyer. I think it would be smart for Dell to integrate the XPS line into the Alienware brand, or at least have an XPS: Alien brand which would umbrella the Alienware identity.

Thats a common business practice for years.

If you have two big competing products both making profits for the same company then it fuels "X sucks Y is better" the company doesn't care in the end the net result is the same £££.

Antaris how are they competing brands? Which laptop does Alienware have that is the same price/features of the XPSM1330? What part of fully owned subsidary is not clear? Dell doesn't tell Alienware how to do business. imho its healthy for both brands to coexist.

XPS and Alienware are for people who don't know they could build themselves a better PC for less than what those brands want for their desktop "gaming PCs". Apparently there's a lot of those people out there. Who knew?

Less is an understatement.. XPS and Alienware are nothing short of a rip-off.

I would like you to configure a XPS system with everything they provide and with the same warranty and support level. Then you can post the respective prices. When everything I mean also the case not some el cheapo case

You can use tape, wire and coat hangers to make a "mobile" computer cheaper ... if u want a laptop not built by pre school kids then maybe buy one.

Also this "I can build one cheaper" does that include time to built, setup etc. - or are you just including half the item you buy. Sure it might be possible to buy one a lot cheaper - but in reality loads of people cant be bothered, and unless you are penny pinching whats the point in saving a couple of hundres pounds, wasting an entire weekend etc. Id rather watch tv with a beer and wait for it to arrive.

You're wrong about the XPS brand, I've been making my own PC's for over a decade, and recently bought the XPS-720 (at 15% cheaper than web price when you haggle), as a complete package I could not build a machine which included the OS, 3 years ON-SITE next day business warranty at the same price.
Alienware, possibly - you do pay more for the looks, case & lights. They are unique machines, you'd be hard pushed to build a machine that looked as polished.

The xps include replacement parts if that part dies. if you build your own most of the time you have to buy the part yourself. That alone pays for itself. Most of the time this includes next day air also.

Agreed, the trick is to buy a memory expansion elsewhere.
