Hewlett-Packard has told customers not to install Windows XP service pack three (SP3) on AMD-based desktops until Microsoft and HP cough fixes to the endless reboot snafu that has wreaked havoc on PCs. Microsoft confirmed yesterday that it was scurrying to patch the problem after hundreds of angry XP customers first grumbled about the sizeable ****-up last week.

"HP is working diligently with Microsoft on a software update and will be proactively distributing a patch this week through HP Update that will prevent this error from occurring," said the computer giant in a statement. "HP recommends consumers with AMD-based desktops wait until after HP's or Microsoft's updates have been deployed on their systems to install Service Pack 3."

I thought this effected Intel CPUs as well. What is it with the AMD chip that would cause problems? I did a slipstream install with SP3 on a AMD PC... no problems at all.

It has nothing to do with AMD chips or Microsoft. HP screwed up the installations.

The HP machines were installed with a power management driver that was designed for Intel - blows up with SP3.

They used the same image to roll out Intel and AMD boxes

That's interesting. All the haters here said is Microsoft's fault.

It once again comes down to the design of Windows being a house of cards. This SP3 install problem is caused by a single file. A single file. That's not a very robust OS design, is it?

This time it wasn't MS's fault, but this kind of thing is a Windows design problem, not a universal problem that other operating systems necessarily experience.

Did you upgrade from the HP factory install, or were the PCs wiped and reinstalled with XP?

Another reason to make fresh installs and to make custom hard disk images. However, this is not for the average computer use.

I don't know yet if this affects only HP or recovery cd's only, but for people with AMd chips, better have a backup at hand before trying to upgrade to SP3.

The news that Toshiba will bundle TrueImage with their laptops is a good idea, as long as they allow you to install trueimage without recovery cd's, this way, you install clena, customize, and make images.

In other (but fake) news, HP today begged Microsoft not to push Vista on it's customers.
Bill Gates was reportedly amused, while Steve Balmer broke out into a nonsensical tirade and then randomly began breaking stuff. Former AMD executives could not be reached for comment at the unemployment office.

Good old Vista

The same would happen on Vista as well - it would blindly load the device driver.

Nice try tho', too bad you don't realize what you're talking about and effectively made yourself look like a completely idiot. Which I doubt it far from the truth. :p

What? None of the SP3 "testers" had a HP/AMD machine?
Another hard to believe they missed it patch release!

I had no issues on either of my AMD machines. Neither are HP's.
