I am here this morning in Cambridge, Mass., at OLPC’s Global Country Workshop. Opening the conference this morning was OLPC founder Nicholas Negroponte, who announced the second generation of the OLPC XO laptop, which will be called the XO-2.

Negroponte didn’t share many details about the XO-2’s hardware, but the new system has two touch-sensitive displays. It will employ the dual indoor-and-sunlight displays, which was pioneered by former OLPC CTO Mary Lou Jepsen. The design will provide a right and left page in vertical format, a hinged laptop in horizontal format, and a flat, two-screen continuous surface for use in tablet mode. “Younger children will be able to use simple keyboards to get going, and older children will be able to switch between keyboards customized for applications as well as for multiple languages,” the press release reads. The XO-2 will also reduce power consumption to 1 watt.

Wow!
That's slick. Can't believe they are so cheap.

Oh well, they are for the good cause anyway.

The good cause is to experiment using the third world countries like guineas pigs (again) and using their resources in the process.

It's quite a design change from the original version 1.0 machines. XP based to == Win. I'm sure Edubuntu or another distro would have been perfect for them, makes you wonder how much Microsoft is charging for each individual license.

Nothing I have seen on the XO version 2 makes mention of using Microsoft Windows at all. The Windows option is for the original laptop-style XO machines, not this keyboard-less book design.

And how the hell will this be cheap? Tablet PCs today are ridiculously expensive. Even if they keep the price low, it seems like this thing will break a lot easier than the previous one. Scratches and breakages on the screens won't help...

They are slated for 2010 which means that they will be available in 2011, by then we'll have an ASUS Eee 999 which is gonna be ten times better anyway.
