Nintendo's hugely popular Wii console has entered the internal status of 'early warning' of a major American retail outlet, meaning the current stock-keeping unit will start being phased out within 90 days and will be replaced, shortly there after, by a newer SKU.

A trusted source with access to internal documents has given Neowin this exclusive story. It remains to be seen whether this development is due to new bundles being released or perhaps coloured versions of the Wii, but the current SKU will definitely begin to be removed from sales channels within 90 days.

We will report more on this story as new facts come to light.

can i have that in english. does it mean that there is not enough wii's
#2 thealexweb on 26 May 2008 - 12:15
No I think it means there brining out a new version like an upgrade like Nintendo WII Elite or summut.
#3 bangbang023 on 26 May 2008 - 12:26
It simply means that the current package will be discontinued within this 90 day period. Whether this means they will simply change something like the included game or release various colors is to be seen, but it does mean that the current Wii package will be phased out.

How can neowin go on ignoring their gaming section so much, then pull an exclusive like this out of nowhere?
Come on, show the gaming news section some love!

The staff tends to get excited about anything "only on Neowin".

I guess this is the reason a buddy of mine was able to pick up a few wii's at discount price.

Discount? They still can not even keep them on the shelves here! we still have people lineing up for them weekly!

I was shocked to see 6 of them on the shelf in Walmart the other day...then went back the next morning and they were gone lol.
#5.3 Dakkaroth on 26 May 2008 - 23:51
Probably on discount due to them being dropped on the ground.

New SKU? How much more would it cost Nintendo to upgrade the little internal storage? That small 512Mb should be upgraded to at least 2-4Gb, with all the virtual console games....

I know that it's wishful thinking, but a new Wii that could output 720p would be incredible for HDTV owners....

Colored Wiis would make Microsoft and Sony cry.
#7.1 macrosslover on 26 May 2008 - 14:52
not really. black would sell like crazy but it's not like the white isn't selling well anyway. I think this is just probably a Wii with an updated cheaper chipset for them, that maybe adds one feature or so.
#7.2 C_Guy on 26 May 2008 - 14:57
Why? Does the XBOX 360 and PS3 come in other colors?

I see no tears.

The color is the only thing stopping me from getting one. As soon as the black color comes out I will finally get one.

Please take note that when the Nintendo Wii package started to include the jackets, a new SKU was introduced to replace the old one.

As far as I'm concerned, it's probably just a new demo/game included. Nothing to get excited about.

Using jargon like "SKU" does not make a rumor any more credible, it just makes it look more like corporate marketing-speak.
#9.1 outz on 26 May 2008 - 18:00
just because you don't know what a SKU is doesn't make it any less credible.

And just because that doesn't make it any less credible still doesn't imply that it's a good idea to use the term. SKU is corporate marketing-speak. The words "model" or "version" work perfectly well to describe what is being discussed. If you do not work retail, you have no reason to use the term "SKU." If you do work retail, you have no reason to use the word "SKU" with people who don't. Most of us here do not work retail. Just because someone has "insider lingo" doesn't mean they should use it. They don't come off sounding intriguing, enigmatic, or knowledgeable. They come off sounding like an ass, which is what's happening to the tool who wrote this article. Guys, we're smarter than that - don't buy into stupid word substitutions when the existing geek vernacular suffices perfectly to describe something.

But it may not be a new model or version. It could simply be they decide to throw in an orange controller. It's a new SKU and the term is perfectly acceptable.

"Package," "Bundle," or "Set" would be a better term if that were the case.

Except it isn't news if they change the color of the controller, it is filler material. That is the real problem here - when sites start reporting on aesthetic changes in an attempt to try to one up each other, then we're left with a glut of re-hashed press releases about every single little change that occurs to a product in the name of "the most current news." A lot of things fall into this category, actually, such as the numerous "so-and-so filed for this patent" stories that are increasingly common. That is nothing but speculation of the highest order, especially when many companies file for a swarm of patents as legal CYA.

And CelticWhisper is absolutely right in what he says, I am glad someone understood my intent. These days I feel the only gaming reviews I can actually trust to be worthwhile are those from ZeroPunctuation, because he maintains a healthy level of disrespect toward the gaming industry rather than fawning over every little move they make because that is what the people want.

Probably a bundle with Mario Kart Wii or Wii Fit.

Maybe HD output.
#11.1 +Skwerl on 27 May 2008 - 16:01
That's incredibly unlikely. The machine's not designed to handle that, and probably never will. It does a modest job with standard definition, so we won't be seeing it do a very good job with HD.

(1920 * 1080) / (720 * 480) = 6
In other words, it would need to push six times the pixels it does currently.
(1 reply) #12 xinary on 26 May 2008 - 20:36
what a stupid news story..seriously... i am not even go into the thousands of reasons why this man made pathetic excuse at a rumor fails in every way.
#12.1 bangbang023 on 27 May 2008 - 08:59
Except it's not a rumor. The paperwork we got to see clearly indicates the current package being removed from shelves.
(1 reply) #13 +CelticWhisper on 26 May 2008 - 22:42
And for a post that doesn't bitch about the use of the marketroid term "SKU," I'd settle for an upgrade that forces all GC games into 480p. That should be relatively trivial to implement and would breathe new life into some nicer-looking but interlaced-only GC titles.

Either that or some kind of DS integration. I can't help but feel that DS<-->Wii connectivity is a goldmine that hasn't been properly plundered yet.
#13.1 +Skwerl on 27 May 2008 - 16:03
If it were trivial, it would have already been done.
(1 reply) #14 obsolete_power on 27 May 2008 - 06:06
Whatever it is, they better not ****ing change the hardware! A different bundle is okay as long as they keep it the same as the ones sold until now. It wouldn't be fair to the people that bought one already to suddenly start selling an improved one!
#14.1 antareus on 27 May 2008 - 16:41
Doing that would turn everyone who heard about it against them instantly. Nintendo isn't pulling an Apple here.
#15 kravex on 27 May 2008 - 07:32
Probably nothing more than a newer firmware in the new box.
