Second-tier motherboard maker Abit is reportedly concidering phasing out of the motherboard market after evaluating its shipment performance of Intel 4 series motherboards, according to channel sources. Abit, howerver, maintains it does not know anything about the speculation and will continue to develop motherboard products.

Abit's has failed to meet the expectations of parent company Universal Scientific Industrial (USI) in its ability to compete with fellow second-teir makers in terms of performance, or first-tier makers in terms of pricing in the mid-range and entry-level market, and so the company is evaluating whether to quit the market and start developing other products for the Abit brand, noted the sources.

I somehow read that as Asus at first

Not sure. If 1st mean in term of unit's sale, I know ECS and MSI are pretty high in number, been cheaper than Asus.

It will be a shame if Abit give up making mobos. I'm a computer builder and I can say that the Abit are build better than pretty much everything else. I build all my small PC with Asus, ASRock or MSI, but the big one get a Abit mobos.

MSI is BY FAR BETTER than ECS. There is no comparison. NONE!

Ive had nothing but trouble with Abit motherboards, infact im replacing mine in a few days. Theyre so picky, i cleaned out my system the other day and switched it back on and the alarm went off. waited a few hours and it was fine, was the same with my last abit motherboard too. Asus are much better

Beside dust pack real tight in the heatsink fan, dust doesn't hurt a PC, You should never have to clean a PC. If the unit is an area where it is likely to pick up lost of dust, you should use filter to prevent the dust going in. Otherwise, don't touch anything.

You're wasting your money changing your mobos just for that reason.

I disagree. First of all, he did not say he changed his MB he said he cleaned it. Yes cleaning a PC from dust is very beneficial. I use my air compressor every few months to blow out the dust inside my computer. It removes dust on the fan blades and dust on the circuit board which can cause the chips to get hot. Just look inside your computer and look at all the dust that builds up inside the cpu cooler/fins. I also use it to remove dust from inside the power supply. There is no way you can eliminate dust just using filters. I have been building computers and using this technique for 10 years and have never had an issue from this. Saying not to touch anything is a bit overdone. I recommend using caution, unplug the computer from the wall and remove any static electricity from your body.

Good for you. Me I prefer to work at keeping the dust outside.

Like I said just be careful when working inside your PC. What kind of filters are you using that you can keep all the dust out. My house has alot of dust and I can't imagine any filter system keeping all the dust out of my PC. Oh well, whatever works for you. NP. Have a nice day!

Asus mobo's rock! but Abit used to be pretty good back in the day, ohh well.

I've used Abit a few times and they have never let me down. Long live the NF7-S v2!

I would hate to see them go, as its never good to lose competition. Many of the motherboards are just insanely priced in my opinion.

Confused... it says "Abit is reportedly concidering phasing out of the motherboard market" and then "Abit, howerver, maintains it does not know anything about the speculation and will continue to develop motherboard products." So why is this being reported? Sounds like bad reporting on DigiTimes part to me. Unless I just misread something.

I have an Abit running my Q6600, can't complain at all aside from a minor dual booting issue.
#9 Shiranui on 28 May 2008 - 02:24
Hang in there, Abit!

My faith in Abit has been rattled over the years with two big events:

1. AV8 BIOS 25. They released a BIOS that bricked every board it was installed in. Even ECS didn't do that.

2. I bought an IP35-E (a compromise because the Gigabyte P35-DS3L I wanted was unavailable) and I suspect it had a DIMM socket that was not just defective, but burned out each stick installed in one socket. (It's not normal to get two bad two-stick kits in a row, is it? ) So I swapped it for the DS3L and haven't been happier.
