Apple's iPhone, a new model of which is widely expected this summer, took 19.2 percent of the U.S. market for smart-phones sold in the first quarter of 2008, according to research firm IDC's vendor survey. That was down from 26.7 percent of smart-phones sold in the fourth quarter of last year, which included the holiday shopping season. Much of the slack was picked up by Research In Motion's BlackBerry, which took 35.1 percent of the market in the fourth quarter and then 44.5 percent in the first. IDC analyst Ramon Llamas said the BlackBerry is now strong in the "prosumer" segment, as RIM has successfully widened the appeal of the device beyond the professionals who have been its core customer group.

This is only to be expected - Apple haven't been stocking 8GB iPhones for ages now (and people are holding off for 3G ones).

Exactly, what can you expect, I mean, there hasn't been iPhone updates in ages.

On the other hand though, Apple will pull out OS X Mobile 2.0 in... well, very soon now, as well as the 3G iPhone. And they added a bunch of cool things, and a lot of fixes to the criticism.

From my vision, I can see that iPhone 2.0 will succeed and will be a MUCH BETTER competitor than iPhone 1 was. iPhone 1 missed only a few key features (video capture, 3G...), but the most important ones, so it was like a shot in the foot.

If iPhone 2 doesn't sell, well I admit I made mistakes and all by saying all this, and will assume that for mobie phones, maybe Apple sucks, but I really believe hard in this product, so I guess we'll know in 6 months (about the sales)

Its not OS X Mobile 2.0, it's Iphone Firmware 1.2.0 whats comming. Its still OS X 10.5 what runs on the phone.

Yet, I dont think iphone will ever get more then inthusiast and media users, unless they they update the LICENSE that forbids real 3rd part apps (Firefox, Office, Messenger, etc)

ENthusiast. /gramamartroll

I think the system that is in place for app downloading is close to perfect, and gives almost anyone the ability to do what they want. Apple is going to be very lax about what it allows on it's AppStore, meaning lots of great 3rd party apps (similar to apple.com/downloads which yes, does list Firefox, Office et al.) and at the same time, the service providers get the peace of mind that apps are getting screened. The people who won't get allowed are people who intend to "break" the iPhone in any way, such as modifying firmware.

Basically, Apple has found a compromise that you'd have to be pretty anal not to go with.

Apple's bleeding the channel, waiting to release the next-gen iPhone.

We'll see in due time.

Oh, I highly doubt they're trying to stop sales of the "old and busted" iPhone. Wouldn't they want as much money out of their R&D money? I think so.

I personally think that the price is the big killer. why get an ipgone for $400 when i can get a windows smartphone for $200?

I really think apple needs to ork on letting att wireless offer discounts. Then watch sales go up.
#4.1 Fanon on 02 Jun 2008 - 13:51
I think that is a large part of it. I got a Blackberry Curve for a little over $70. I'll take that over a $400 iPhone anyday.

Is there a blackberry that can use OWA to sync (and I mean full sync not just email) rather than having to buy into their expensive Enterprise Server? I would be interested in one, but until then Nokia with Mail for Exchange does what I need.

If you just have 1 BlackBerry, you can download the BlackBerry Professional software (free) via registration of your BB PIN. It comes with 1 CAL free, additional CALs are $99, same as with BES.

The BlackBerry Professional software is bascially BES, but with a limit of 30 users. Beyond that, you will need to purchase BES.

And yes, I did just set up a BlackBerry Professional server at my site. you can shoot me a PM if you have install questions. My only advice would be to read ALL of the documentation BEFORE you install the software.

Ha! That's funny. Our migration team did just that and we are still on the phone with RIM. Biggest piece of trash I've seen, this BB Manager software. When it works, it's great, but if you have to do a migration, be prepared to have RIM's number on speed dial.

Looking at new Blackberry and Android demos it seems like iPhone 2 will have much more stiffer competition.
