The era of officially sanctioned iPhone applications should kick off on Monday.That's the same day Apple CEO Steve Jobs is expected to take the stage at the Moscone Center to unveil the next-generation iPhone at the company's annual Worldwide Developers' Conference. A source at a software company that has been working on a native iPhone application tells us the company is getting ready to launch that application on Monday, which could also imply that Apple's App Store will be up and running that day.
The App Store is going to be the only way to get official third-party iPhone applications onto your device. Developers have been submitting their applications to Apple for testing and verification since the iPhone SDK became available, and in exchange for hosting and distributing the applications Apple is taking 30 percent of the revenue generated by sales of that application.
Gizmodo has reported that the newest iPhone--which is expected to connect to 3G cellular networks--will be immediately available on Monday. Based on this latest information, the iPhone 2.0 software--which enables the delivery of official applications through the App Store as well as several other business-friendly features--should also be available for download on Monday.
That software is supposed to work with both the current version of the iPhone and the widely expected 3G version that should make its debut this month, so you won't have to buy a new iPhone to start using iPhone applications.
But you might want to buy a new one if you get lost on a regular basis. The same source was able to confirm reports from earlier this week from GigaOm and Wired that the newest iPhone will have support for GPS technology, enabling the iPhone to get a precise fix on your location. The combination of GPS and faster networking speeds should allow for a whole range of location-aware applications to proliferate on the iPhone, as they have on other competing phones.

Most other free applications for other mobile networks make use of download mirrors or other sites to host their applications ( a lot of software download sites will host and simply allow users to "buy" it for nothing ) if their extremely busy.
Ive developed free phone software many years ago and if I had to pay apple $100 I would rather not bother.
And if you can't handle $100, borrow it from a rich uncle, and charge 50¢ for it. If it's good enough, you'll be in the black in no time -- iPhone buyers won't mind paying for it. But if you don't want to be bothered, I'm sure Apple can accommodate that.

If people are developing applications for free particularly for themselves why should they have to stump up anything?
I get some people want to be political and offer their work for free, fine. But, seriously, who are these developers who want the exposure but can't or refuse to pay $100? Can there app possibly be worth having the exposure? If they are so committed to free, can't they take donations? If they can't or won't or don't have charitable support, am I really supposed to believe that their crappy app thats entitled, ENTITLED I say, to Apple bearing the cost of distributing it is worth it? Because I don't.
Or remove the limit totally and just let you use whatever space you have?
There's already enough freeware to fill a gig or two so why limit it to 300mb - Grrrrrr!!!

Charging for apps better be dramatically different then what they done with the January update for ipod touch or quite frankly they can fk off. i bought the update i had to restore my ipod a few weeks back i cant get it back so i had to jail break it to even get the features i paid for which ideally i should have done free in the first place. i know there's docs on apples support to get them back but what'ya know they didn't work..
Quite honestly this is just going to turn into same situation as PSP if they don't make the right decisions and pathway for it soon. ATM the only thing actually making ipod touch's worth their price is jail breaking and costing even more thinking will help it ? i doubt it. Sorry. As part of paying for january update ipod touch owners who paid for it should get this stuff free this time round.
Some how i very much doubt this will happen will only have apple add more fuel to jailbreaking movement. Adding to the fact they have actual tools to develop jailbroken apps on now too.
In the end it will be good for some but the generalized market who own them and have already jailbroken them apple will pretty much be ****ing on them self with this update.
Free apps legit is one thing, just remember and watch apple charge ipod touch owners to download the app store etc just as they done with January update.
All i can hope is they are more lenient with iphone 3G and include all the features free.
If Apple want to charge for this update, they can go f$ck themselves. It will[i] be cracked and made available for free to Jailbreakers eventually. Most of the apps will probably be made available for free as well. If they had been reasonable and provided the update for free like they should have, I would have been more than willing to buy apps from Appstore. Now I'll just get them for free from Jailbreak if this is how greedy they are going to be.
They have no concept of taking care of their customers. All they care about is nickel and diming you for all they can. Well they're not getting a dime from me for this update.
