July 11 the 3G iPhone will reach the snatching hands of the crazed public. The new iPhone supports new features such as 3G wireless (surprise!), GPS mapping, enterprise features like Microsoft Exchange, and the new App Store. Keeping in line with the original iPhone, you get the same major features: widescreen iPod, and desktop-class web browser. It also includes smart sensors that help save battery life by adjusting the backlight based on ambient light. The 3G iPhone is presented with the lines: "Twice as fast. Half the price." The price will start at $199.

Any money says that they wont let you out of the store without signing a contract.
And isn't that a nice news logo?
Now now, calm down you!
They're not stupid, they know what people do - and I just can't see them allowing you to buy one without signing (as goes for every other subsidised contract phone (the previous price was Apple's full price, and wasn't subsidised, so the networks didn't really care).
It's going to be unlocked out of the box if you buy it in Italy. So, you should have no problem to get one via eBay or similar.

yeah, because it will be the same price in italy ofcourse
edit: just looked at bmahers profile and he is from the uk, in that case, it might save him some money :p
However this time around it's very likely there will be no way of getting out of the store without signing up to an o2 contract. If you cancel it, you must return the phone.

lol funny guy..
This is one of the most widely used features with bluetooth users, and has been a major gripe about the iPhone. (Especailly when a 2004 motorola cheapie has full voice recognition and digit dialing)
Wonder if it will be Jailbreaked soon
Neztea
it seems to be country by country basis, those countrys who require it open, it is open, local laws
In case no one told you; it's OK to use periods and commas here on Neowin.
Because they aren't controlling the market. You have any number of other phones to pick from. You also can't be fined for controlling the market on a product you designed. That would be like saying they could fine them for not meeting customer demand.
Too much money for an ugly phone. I rather any nokia instead... And thats too much to say

I have an iPod Touch and it still makes my head turn when I see it on my own coffee table.
The iPhone 3G will be available July 11th in 22 countries. The maximum price around the world is $199 USD. Now showing an ad.
11:45 am $299 for the 16GB -- a white version of this size will be available too.
11:45 am Now on to the final challenge -- affordability. Started at $599 for an 8GB iPhone, now $399. The iPhone 3G 8GB will sell for... $199.
Isn't the max price around the world wrong?
It's not saying the higher end model in other countries is the same price as the low-end model in the US.
Not for me.
Not for me.
It is a lot, but no more then other contracts, but as I dislike contracts, mines unlocked to orange PYG

I pay £28 per month to Orange (including 30MB internet) and I still can't use up my minutes and texts, or my 30MB come to that. £35 per month is extortion, in my view!
Not for me.
o2 is coming up with a pay as u go plan also!
Note: The swear filter is there for a reason

What an innovation!
Has Steve patented this one-camera 3G phone?
Plus my friends don't have phones capable of that so I'm happy with how it is.

Actually... Rogers/Fido provides the phones and the technology for video calling...
Yes, that's how it works. For everyone.

get the HTC Touch Diamond/Pro instead, better phone and has nothing to do with Apple/Nazi Tunes, what more do you need?

You can get a £7:50 a month web bolt on for pay and go users.
The GPS problem will be solved by third party GPS software that will allow you to load maps on.
what memory? mmaps wont take GB's of space.. copilot just needs 256 mb card for maps. you got 8 GB
Meet your next phone, people.

If it wasn't an iPhone and it wasn't made by Apple I'd agree with you. iPhones will now be piling up in landfills with their other products because you just have to have one.
Hey, if you don't your iPhone I'll gladly take it off your hands

N96 will be my main phone soon.
Could someone explain to me what does the iPhone 3G have that the HTC Touch Diamond doesn't?
The Touch Diamons has all those features, plus it's a WM 6.1 device (just think to the variety of applications you could get RIGHT NOW) and it has the video call camera on the front side.
Besides that the HTC has a smaller screen at 2.8", off my head the iPhones is 3.5"?
Not sure but the iPhone I think is cheaper too but I'd need to relook at the HTC.
So yeah, definitely differences there. For me out of the devices I'd probably pick the iPhone actually, but I may also consider the new HTC model that has a keypad along with touch as that may be handy.
yes, while starter = dumb, granny and/or stupid people. WM6.1 is not so hard, in fact is more natural to a desktop.

As a recent switcher from HTC Touch to iPhone, I can tell you that I would never touch Windows Mobile again.
Compared to the iPhone software, Windows Mobile is slow, clunky, and very unorganised. On the iPhone, everything just seems to a) be where you expect it to be and b) flow naturally. Also, there's no way you can compare the touch screens in HTC devices with that of the iPhone - the iPhone's screen is far more advanced and is much nicer to use.
It promised so much, but delivered so little... maybe apple should have paid more attention to all the rumours and hype regarding what people thought it would be like... I mean even the Samsung i900 is more feature packed than this...
Sorry apple.. Ill be looking elsewhere....
I mean don't get me wrong... the iPhone isn't perfect but if you ask me, Apple have made a serious mobile phone which is a contender for the smartphone crown.

Um, that does not make any sense. Do you want just a phone... then why care about "feature rich?" Also, cna you tell me where to get a Samsung i900.
Damn you, Steve Jobs!
You get to keep your 2.5G phone also. They offer a contract for a family member or a PayG Sim specifically for iPhones.
3.5g is a scam, limit only on a few perimeters and you can't achieve the full potential.
I'm in the same boat as you, sort of. I'm really into WM, but I've always been tempted by the iPhone. But the price really put me off. Now, it's something to consider. I was planning to get the HTC Touch Diamond, but it looks like I'm gonna have to think twice about this now.

Here's something else to think about- Windows Mobile 7 is probably closer than you think! I'd really like a more powerful PDA-Phone than I have now, but I'm going to hold out for the WM7 devices. The thing that really keeps me from switching over is that I enjoy Windows and WM programming. I've coded stuff for Macs before, and their SDKs and the IDE selection is really inferior to Microsoft's offerings.
yes it is marketing, yes some of these things are not new, but it ROCKS!
Having a HTC Trinity and a HTC Touch Dual, which use Windows Mobile 6.1
I have to say the iPhone interface just blows it away. xda forumn have tried to simulate similar interfaces for Windows Mobiles, but it just doesnt work as nice
HTC Trinity and Touch Dual are just too slow .... I suspect the HTC Diamond will have similar issues running on Windows Mobile 6.
I hate how much "control" they have over applications, especially taking 30% income sold from the store.
I'm impressed by the SDK, seems like a real good SDK. App Developers re getting prototypes up in a few weeks.
(Though I'm worried at code quality - trade off RAD)
Main thing keeping me back was 3G and GPS. They have it now..... reading TomTom have a prototype for the iphone, so I would use TomTom for navigation (store map data instead of stream) rather than google.
+ Exchange / MS Office compatibility is a ++ too!
As for no front camera/video call... well .. that a bit sucky! but then again I never really used video conf call so it wont bother me.
What would like is a stylus hand writing regonition... hope the chinese thing demoed will work with english too... though it would be better if you could write anywhere on the screen.
P.S I am not a mac fanboy or anything... hence having two windows mobile devices. But as I said WM6 has failed to impress me. I have also had a Sony P800 Simbian mobile too.
The 30% cut for developers is not in the "Cons" column, but rather the "Pros" column. It costs us around 45-50% to put stuff on Microsoft's "Mobile Marketplace" and it doesn't come close to offering what Apple has put on the table. They wouldn't (maybe until now) even consider putting free apps on there with only $100 charge.
a zune, work mobile and personal mobile (GPS included)
im hoping to replace all three with just one device and i dont have to pay to switch to iphone. and im already on 35 pounds contract. yay
