Top OEMs to sell Windows XP PCs down to the wire

Three of the top four PC sellers worldwide plan to sell systems with Windows XP right up to the Microsoft-mandated deadline of June 30. Of the four, only Dell plans to call it quits before the last day of this month.

Microsoft has set June 30 as the final day of Windows XP availability to retailers and major computer makers, although the company recently also said that the date won't mark a sudden disappearance of the old operating system. "The exact cut-off day for selling Windows XP is determined by OEMs and retailers, who can keep selling standalone versions as well as PCs with Windows XP preloaded by OEMs distributed prior to June 30, 2008, as long as their supplies last [emphasis in original]," a Microsoft spokeswoman said two weeks ago in an e-mail.

Very confusing, isn't it.

On one hand they will stop selling PC (or notebook) with XP pre-loaded.

On the other hand they will sell PC (or notebook) with Vista Business or Ultimate pre-loaded but with a disk allowing you to upgrade to XP Pro.

Yes, upgrade to XP Pro.
So true.

The home version stops on June 30th but the pro version goes on until 2011 or some such date.

according to my dell biz rep they will continue to offer 'xp downgrade' which will come with a vista disc. You can upgrade whenever your network is ready.

You spelled "xp upgrade" wrong.

XP downgrade rights exist; this story is phoney, making it out like XP will stop being sold. Shoot, you can still get 2000 if your still not happy with XP.

Additionally, there is nothing wrong with Vista. Recent tests have shown benchmark and real world performance better then or equal to XP, and Vista's feature set is fairly large. Choosing not to get Vista should be more like choosing to delay upgrading your hardware, not this FUD Striking Fiasco that is caused by zealotry, sensational journalism, and the conventional anti-upgrade groups that come every generation.

I noticed you didn't back your obvious vi$ta fanboyism with any verifiable links to these alleged "tests" so that your claims can be check for accuracy.

Also, where are these alleged "anti-upgrade groups" located? you claim they come "every generation" so it should be easy for you to point them out, the last vi$ta fanboy who made a similar claim tried to back it up by showing a whopping 9 pages of complaints against XP back when it was released, this of course is no comparison to the countless pages of vi$ta complaints, there are even commercials on tv saying that vi$ta sucks <laf>

Normally I don't post comments but seeing your comment really irritates me.

First things first, is it that hard to press the "s" button on your keyboard? Unless you find pressing shift + 4 to type vi$ta (instead of simply Vista) easier or increases the credibility of your comment, then I have nothing to say... Also, instead of being a hypocrite, why don't you back up your comment with "verifiable links" to these "countless pages of Vista complaints and Vista bashing commercials"? I would love to see those!

Secondly, just because someone defends Vista doesn't make he/she a fanboy/girl, I don't know how you came up with that idea. Wait, since you're laughing at Vista with your < laf >, that means you must be a XP fanboy!

[end rant]

Frankly,
I can tolerate the XP fanboys much easier than the Vi$ta fanboys!!

I can also easily see why OEM's want to carry XP right to the end.

How are any of those links relevant?

PC Mag article - 15 months old (written six weeks after Vista was released)
Fox News article - 11 months old.
TortoiseSVN - one app project that can't figure out how to get their sh*t together? Really?
c|net article - So Kaspersky AV had/has some problems. So. NOD32, AVG, and others don't.

So you came up with a couple of really outdated articles, some software developers that couldn't adapt as quickly as others, and a commercial from the only competing platform that produces TV commercials. Good job.

You don't get out much do you? you obviously have some sort of reading comprehension problem, fanboy.

I posted a few links to show vi$ta problems, in other words, I backed my words, unlike the fanboy who made tall claims about vi$ta that have yet to be backed up at all.

One thing XP has been able to do is to run on really really old PC's running Pentium I's. With upgraded RAM and a PCI graphics card, older PC's have been given new life using a widely accepted OS. But with Vista that won't happen, even with Vista Basic, it's hard to run it on a Pentium III let alone a minimum of 256Mb of RAM. XP Home can run with 256Mb of RAM (albiet slow).

That said, with the elimination of XP in the near future for system builders such as myself, reviving older computers will be next to impossible unless I go the route of Linux.

With so many older computers running Windows 2000, NT and XP that are unable to be upgraded to Vista, there's gonna be a huge pile of useless computers laying around in the thrift stores and recycle centers. I'm thinking because of Vista, the only way these computers will ever see life again is to run a decent Linux-based OS like Ubuntu and others.

And with that I feel Linux operating systems will become the major contender to Windows as opposed to Apple OS. My opinion is that Microsoft's Vista will make Linux more desirable as an OS. Right now XP users can go three ways, Vista, Leopard, or Linux. If you hate Vista but love that machine you bought or built, then it's either Vista or Linux. If you gotta learn a whole new operating system, you may as well get it cheap or free and that can load onto your platform. To me Linux is the wave of the future as the defacto OS. If Microsoft was smart they should have listened to all of the beta testers of Vista and pushed the launch date of Vista further out. Their premature marketing campaign failed in my eyes and only helped Apple with crossover XP expatriates.

Vista is a good product but it came out too early, like the Apple Newton, the general public (and software developers) weren't ready for it's debut. I know we need to be weened off of XP, however XP is still the favorable OS in the eyes of Windows users, so why get rid of it? As a system builder and restorer of older PC's, the availability of XP Home, Pro or MCE is vital to the survival of these older computers that can still surf the internet and stream video content, let alone run the full Microsoft Office suite 2003 or 2007.

These orphaned computers (once XP is gone) will have to rely on a Linux based OS to stay alive, and there are a ton of them still in operation for years to come.

Bill Gates said it once before, "there will only be one", unfortunately I believe it will be Linux and not Microsoft.
