NVIDIA Drops Prices on GeForce 9800 GTX

Nvidia today urgently informed their partners about the corrections made to their last generation G92 based single-chip solutions line-up, because they were expecting the competition in the mainstream segment to get more aggressive. First of all, they reduced the recommended prices on their GeForce 9800 GTX solution that will now be available for $199.

A newer modification of this graphics card, GeForce 9800 GTX+, will be competing against the new Radeon HD 4850. According to the report on Tweaktown site, the new solution will have its chip frequency increased from 675/1688MHz to 738/1836MHz. As a result, GTX+ model should be about 10% faster than the regular GeForce 9800 GTX. GeForce 9800 GTX+ should supposedly be available in the market for something around $229 retail price.

I bought my 9800GTX at such a bad time, 4 new models of Graphics card, a new iteration of the 9800GTX, and a reduced price for the current model, and I've not even assembled it yet!

Ahhhh. The world of technology.

I just bought an 8800GT 512. I might have to upgrade

Yeah, I was going to say there's one reason and one reason only why Nvidia did this, the Radeon 4850. Price wars are great for us.

Never have cared for Nvidia anyway!
Not a gamer at all either. Absolutely rediculous amount of money for a graphics card, IMO.

It is. Take in comparison the value of top notch gaming cards 5 years ago.
#4.3 +Smigit on 20 Jun 2008 - 14:07
its as much as many would spend on a CPU, hell even a computer case. It's also not bad when looked at in comparison to current console prices either.

Price is only a number folks. What one person thinks is expensive, the next will think it's fine. I think anything made by BMW and Mercedes is overpriced, but there are obviously those out there who will say otherwise. $200 for a high end gaming card is not ridiculous. $550-600+ is... (*cough* GTX 280 *cough*)

agreed. I think its a great price. Hell you could Tri-SLI the cards for the same price as that 280 if your prepared to also take in the power and heat increase with it.

Bought my 9800GTX on it's release day for $400AU and been very happy with it. And no, I don't regret the fact it's alot cheaper since I needed the card then not now.

Dunno where you are getting our prices from, but as an example.. GeForce 4600 in 2002 was retail $305-$315

Source: http://www.sharkyextreme.com/hardware/vide...3211_1369251__9

Which actually is kind of cheap, I remember the 7800GTX's were in the $600 range when they came out 3 years or so ago.

$199 is what I would consider a midrange card, and you will never find a "top notch gaming" card for $199....

Huh? Five years ago you couldn't walk out of the store without dropping $300 to $400. Remember ATI's 9700 in 2002? It started at $400, while the 9500 started at $300. The next year saw the 9800 at $400 and nVidia's GeForce FX 5800 (non-Ultra) at $300 (which was absolute crap). We're getting kickass cards in the mainstream segment at $200 now.

The top notch gaming card 5 years ago cost $399. How is that a better value?

I see no reason to spend more than $120 on a video card, mostly not more than half that

If you were a gamer, $200 for a respectable gaming video card is cheap.

In 2002-03 I remember paying around $200 for a GeForce 4 4400Ti. In Feb. I spent about $250 on a 8800 GTS and I think it was a pretty good bargain, all things considered.

Recommended price 200$ ~ 8000 denars. In Macedonia they have the card for ~20000... Nice rip off.

Good job, more confusion... I like you, nVidia... But, this is getting RIDICULOUS... IO mean, seriously, 9800GXT+?!

Why don't you work on lowering the price of the new GTX 2xx series? I know I'm not spending $700 on a video card.

Considering it's 9800 GTX and 9800 GTX+, not 9800 GXT+ lol.

I bought my 9800 GTX a month ago, but it only arrived yesterday due to delay in shipping my new computer case (Antec Performance One 182 - P182, which is an awesome purchase), and this news makes me very happy. Even though I have no intention of RMA'ing my card or anything to that effect.

First of all, up until yesterday I played The Witcher and Mass Effect on a 7900 GTX on stock speeds. For those of you who don't know The Witcher, it's about as GPU-hungry as Oblivion.
Sure, I couldn't play them without lag, especially considering I play at 1920x1200, but I could play both titles.
So I think I can swallow the difference of speed, plus I could just OC my card.

Secondly, with the release of the 200 series and the new driver being made only for that series, I was worried that nVidia would already abandon their 9000 series. This shows that this will probably not be the case, as they would be stupid to bring out a new card and then not update the drivers for it.

TL;DR version:
The current 9800 GTX is fine. You can also OC it yourself. It runs games well at high resolutions. nVidia will probably give us better drivers.
You didn't waste your money.

Try Oblivion with Qarl's Texture Pack 3.

I should probs try that some time, haven't had Obli installed for ages ;p

#10.1 RAID 0 on 22 Jun 2008 - 00:05
Yeah. That's why I went with the $100 8600 GT 512 DDR3 card when I built my rig a few months ago. It's enough speed (for now) to play all the games I like with no lag. I've never been keen on spending more than $200 for a GPU that will be outdated in a year. I guess it's time for the owners of the 8800 GT and GTS' to sell their cards and upgrade for a small price.

I still haven't found anywhere that reflects the new pricing, people are still trying to dump them for around $300 on ebay, keeping my eyes open though...

Must not be looking very hard, minutes after this article was posted newegg had multiple 9800GTX's for 199.
#12 Citrusleak on 22 Jun 2008 - 00:04
Well, that sucks considering I bought my 8800 GT for that price like 3 months ago lol. I don't care though, I love my 8800 GT.
#13 Chonson on 22 Jun 2008 - 02:59
All the 9800GTX's on ebuyer are at least £190 and they have an HD 4850 for £125 that can outperform it? WTF?
#14 CFer on 22 Jun 2008 - 17:01
Are PC Gamers still buying every new video card that hits the market? How many iterations has it been since Crysis came out? Now how many iterations that can actually play Crysis at a decent framerate in a decent resolution?
#15 PGHammer on 23 Jun 2008 - 20:07
Who said they couldn't find any $199USD 9800GTX cards @ NewEgg? I found two: EVGA (currently out of stock) and PNY. (Further, there are twenty-two more under $300USD.) That's twenty-four 9800GTX models under $300 (and the card itself used to be $400 at best). In fact, due to current pricing, the 9800GTX is cheaper in most cases than the 9600GT (or 8800GT, for that matter); are prices of these two cards also about to head south?
