Intel plans to launch three Nehalem-based quad-core processors (Bloomfield) at the end of the fourth quarter this year targeting the company's new LGA1366 socket, according to sources at motherboard makers.

Although official model names have not yet been set, the CPUs are currently identified by the codenames XE, P1 and MS3 with core frequencies of 3.2GHz, 2.93GHz and 2.66GHz, respectively. All three have a TDP of 130W, 8MB L3 cache and will support simultaneous multi-threading (SMT) technology, the sources detailed

The 2005 roadmap is dead, netburst is dead, this CPU is very different from the one announced in 2005.

A new socket? Grrr, this means I'll have to pay more for a motherboard.

Personnaly I don't care of what they promised three years ago, it means nothing. That was back when everyone thought that frequency was like the only indicator of a processors performance.

There's a new socket because it's a completely new architecture. The integrated memory controller alone would need a new motherboard. But either way, the "cheap" processors won't be out until well into 2009 if the rumors are true, the CPUs being released at the end of the year will most likely be extreme parts or server chips.

The 2.66Ghz is a high end mainstream chip, so hopefully it will be in at around £200.

From Anandtech's preview of Nehalem, if it's Socket 1366, then it will most likely be an extreme part. For some strange reason, intel is releasing 2 new sockets, one for extreme parts (skulltrail) and one for mainstream (1160).

Anandtech
Intel will obviously have dual-channel versions of Nehalem in the future, unfortunately it looks like they will use a smaller socket for mainstream versions of the chip (LGA-1160?). We won't have to deal with socket segmentation just yet and it is always possible that Intel will choose to stand behind a single socket for the majority of the desktop market, reserving LGA-1366 for a Skulltrail-like high end but the strategy is unclear at this point.

I'm still looking forward to it, but I may skip Nehalem. I'm planning on building a system with a Q9450 in the next couple of months, so I may wait for the 32nm refresh of Nehalem. We'll see how things work out.

Going with the first socket 1366 gives you one extra DDR3 channel though. For those who want more memory it's the easy choice. Sure it's more for servers though, but that never stopped anyone.

Exactly. I'm thinking about going with the 1366 socket so I can (fingers crossed) build a crunching rig that has two 8 core processors. Rumor has it the 8 core will be released in 2009, so all I can really do is wait and watch the benchmarks come in!

nah there wont be 8-core nahalem for the General Custumer

at least it only reserved for High-ended Xeon Servers

from what i saw of there roadmap the next chip due in 2010 will be 6 core 12 thread Nahalem-c aka westmere 32nm
