Although Intel is optimistic about the sales performance of Atom-based nettops, some PC vendors doubt nettops will be as successful as netbooks. According to Intel forecasts, between 2008-2011 netbook and nettop shipments will together see annual double digital growth. Netbooks are expected to see shipments of 47 million units over the three years, while nettops are expected to ship 60 million units.

However, some PC vendors think that although Asustek Computer's Eee PC has sparked the netbook trend, it will be difficult to pass the same experience onto nettops

A nettop/netbook is a low specs/cost desktop/laptop designed specially for web and low processing tasks. This kind of computer is also aiming for ultra portability, so most of them are wearing a 10" display or smaller.

Example of netbooks are the MSI Wind, HP 2133, Asus EEE, etc.

I like the idea of a nettop, but wonder if more people would buy a smartphone...

I just don't see what the advantage of a "nettop" is. Seems like something marketing people would have us believe is really useful, and your life will be better with it etc etc

I personally would rather use a smartphone.

A smartphone is portable...a 'nettop' isn't. A 'netbook' is And I don't see a smartphone as being a repalcement or even in the same category. I don't see either as necessarily being replacements for a full blown laptop or desktop either. If you have one already, you probably won't get a netbook/nettop for any reason other than surfing the web. I think their target market is more children and people that can't afford or don't need a full blown system just to browse the web and read their email.

I'm still waiting for my pen-shaped OLED roll-out touchscreen PDA with a stylus stored in the center. :3
