Fiji's government says it's still trying to contact the Microsoft Corporation to discuss the company's plans to launch a product called Microsoft Fiji.

Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum told Fijilive his country wants an amicable resolution about the use of the name for Microsoft's commercial gain.

Microsoft has revealed the next version of its Windows Media Center will be known as Windows Fiji.

surely it's just a project title like longhorn?

Actually, Microsoft is probably referring to Mt. Fiji, to keep with the mountain codenames, which is in Japan. So, I guess the Fiji should also sue Japan too.

Its BS like this that just shows how pathetic people are.

That's actually "Fuji..."

Except that 'Fiji' is the codename, not the product name. What a ridiculous effort on the part of Fiji; have they not done the slightest bit of research? The final product will likely be called something like 'Windows Vista Media Center Update Pack', as it's an update rather than a stand-alone product.

I agree, they never used google, live or yahoo? I can't belive that they never did a research before.

#4 Daedalus on 28 Jun 2008 - 12:08
ROFL, this must be a joke. As mentioned in the other comments, Fiji is the internal codename...
#5 Skynetfuture on 28 Jun 2008 - 12:15
it is codename like all other codenames not the product name

just like 'manila' 'Newcastle' some of the codnames of athlon64 used by amd
#6 MMaster23 on 28 Jun 2008 - 12:33
christ it's a codename that the public shouldn't even know about.
it's because of nosey journalists that they even know....
#7 nunjabusiness on 28 Jun 2008 - 12:59

Shows how some journalists will print (or upload) any old stupid news, no matter how inaccurate it is.
#8.1 +Antaris on 28 Jun 2008 - 13:16
Yeah, got to be journalists, I think the Fiji government would have been informed of its use before now.

I'm quite proud of having Windows 95 codenamed after Chicago (hence I'm from Win95-ville).

Just rename it stupid island (or butt head astronomer, for those who remember a similar case) until release when it's titled media center 2009.
#11 GreyWolfSC on 28 Jun 2008 - 14:09
Cry us a river, Fiji...
(1 reply) #12 rev23dev on 28 Jun 2008 - 16:08
Uhhh... seriously?

I don't know that there are copyrights on country names.

The US Military didn't come after a software company I worked at when we had our internal code name "Stealth!"

And I don't recall the Longhorn calling up Microsoft... oh that's right... because it's a f****** mountain!

He's going to feel like a real dick bag once he realizes it's an internal name.
#12.1 RAID 0 on 29 Jun 2008 - 20:34
lol @ "dick bag"
#13 +Chipshop on 28 Jun 2008 - 18:11
How stupid!
Even if it came out released as Fiji (which we all know it wont) surely that would be good publicity
#14 +Brandon Live on 28 Jun 2008 - 18:35
Why does Neowin print something like "Microsoft has revealed the next version of its Windows Media Center will be known as Windows Fiji. "

Clearly you guys know this is false. Why not caveat the story with, "this is hilarious but patently untrue."

That's kind of a stupid complaint, but then again having a product actually named "Microsoft Fiji" would be stupid as well. But at the same time "Windows Fiji" being a code name for "Windows Media Center" seems to connote that the "Media Center" part will be central to the next release of Windows. They don't even bother to call it "WinMCE Fiji", they just drop the "Media Center" part altogether. It sounds like this will come bundled with the next version of Windows and won't be available to Vista users... is this the case?

I think Fiji is scheduled to go into Vista, actually. From what remember they said that they intended to update the MC shell from the time Vista was released.

Fiji's plan is working and you already lost the game.

It's just a codename..... what a bunch of whiners.
#22 RobertH on 29 Jun 2008 - 19:02
The story is kinda confusing too, first it says "the company's plans to launch a product called Microsoft Fiji." and then it says at the end "Microsoft has revealed the next version of its Windows Media Center will be known as Windows Fiji.".

So is it Windows Fiji or Microsoft Fiji? And im still not sure what exactly Fiji is complaining about since it sounds like the Coedname, not the final name (as about 10,000 other people have said). Even if it was the final product name, there are copyrights on Country names now?

This whole thing = someone trying to get something for nothing. Big company, target of stupid complaints in an attempt to extort funds to shut them up.
#23 nigor on 30 Jun 2008 - 01:58
Fiji looking for some attention?
#24 Magallanes on 30 Jun 2008 - 13:11

Fiji is just another annoying spot in the map.
#25 C_Guy on 30 Jun 2008 - 16:33
When Microsoft uses Canadian names (like Whistler) we take it as a compliment

Time to grow up, Fiji? Or are you in need of some money? Microsoft isn't an ATM you know.

Ah well. Fortunately, there's no law against this so let's just ship off a box of tissues.
#26 +aniv on 01 Jul 2008 - 02:16
I wanna make a condom named Fiji...wonder what they will do? It will be tiny for you know those kind of men
