Rogers announced service plans for the iPhone 3G in Canada today. iPhone 3G combined voice and data plans start at $60 and will be available starting July 11th. "As the wireless provider voted number one in wireless satisfaction(x), Fido is thrilled to offer a variety of well-priced voice and data plans making iPhone 3G accessible to as many of our customers as possible," said Sylvain Roy, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Fido. "These pricing plans will allow our urban customer base easy enjoyment of all that iPhone 3G has to offer."

The data plans, however, are not unlimited as had been rumored. The new rate plans are detailed below:

- $60/month. 150 minutes + unlimited evenings/weekends, 400 MB Data, 75 SMS sent, unlimited incoming SMS
- $75/month. 300 minutes + unlimited evenings/weekends, 750 MB Data, 100 SMS sent, unlimited incoming SMS

- $115/month. 800 minutes + unlimited evenings/weekends, 2 GB Data, 300 SMS sent, unlimited incoming SMS

i wonder if it'll be any cheaper to unlock an iphone and use it with other plans rogers has. would visual voicemail work in that case?

in any case, no. i was thinking about it earlier, but i'd rather buy a ipod touch instead and keep my current phone. it's worked after i've dropped it so many times that it's hard to replace.

Wow. Get an iPhone. Just don't text message a lot.
#4 profets on 28 Jun 2008 - 13:07
brutal. such a disappointment

dont forget - $7/month system access fee , evenings start at 9pm , and no caller id.

let alone the data being at only 400MB.. which i guess i could live with, but by the time you add the few extra costs you'd easily hit 100/month with ****ty voice plan.

No.

I wasnt going to get the Iphone but i knew they would screw people with the plan. Load OF CRAP plan. Horrible voice, text and data... Thanks rogers.
#7 Sinz on 28 Jun 2008 - 13:23
I was waiting for the price structure to be posted by Rogers and now it is clear that I will not be getting an iPhone until the rates for the phone drop. This is sick and goes with the whole notion that up here in Canada we are getting raped with the type of fees we pay for data. Seriously. When US carriers can offer unlimited for dirt cheap we pay out the arse for a pathetic amount of data.
#8 some_guy on 28 Jun 2008 - 14:20
its sad that there are some individuals out there that are willing to pay these prices...

it would be great for a nationwide boycott of the iphone to protest against those rates. but i guess i'm going to keep dreaming

No.
Me neither. I especially won't go on a plan. I got a letter from Telus today asking me to switch off Pay and Talk and I won't do it. I don't use my phone enough to justify it.

Rogers:
"iPhone packages include all the voice minutes and data you’ll need to fully benefit from the breakthrough device."

I think they forgot to mention "for a week".

Wow. It's a voice/data plan like this that makes me wish that the tinfoil hat conspiracy buffs were right about the North American Union. I mean come on, as an American I almost feel compelled to give you ATT... you may have the potential of big brother looking at somethings you do (but it's not like they don't do that in Canada anyways).

Apple really needs to open this phone up to multiple providers (per country), but it is doubtful they ever will.

Won't matter in Canada. There is no competition for mobile phone access and no outside company (read T-Mobile) access beyond the bribery/monopoly companies like Rogers. The government is complicit in these scams and yet notice how it is restricting access to Canada from the US (insane! roaming charges for data and voice) and vice versa.

The problem in Canada is telecommunication companies have to be 60% Canadian owned, this was put in place to protect Canada from US Telecomunication corporations, out competing Canadian companies, do you think Telus, Bell & Rogers would ever survive if Sprint, AT&T and Verizon, etc.. ever offered plans and cell phone service in Canada?

Unfortunately Canadians pay the price for lack of competition, when you have just 3 Cellphone providers in the country.
Virgin, Solo are provided by Bell, Fido is owned by Rogers, Koodo is owned by Telus.

Canadian providers charge the outrageous amount of .95c/min for US roaming, while US providers charge .65c/min for Canadian roaming. my contract with Bell expires July 1, 2008 and I have thought about getting an iPhone, but of course have yet to see the price for the phone itself, probably will be like $199. cdn w/a 3yr contract.

I'll wait to see what Telus brings out in mid july as I had Rogers long long ago when it was Cantel and then Rogers for 2yrs, the customer service sucked as did their shifty billing, not to mention the signal issues, I understand the signal issues has improved with GSM and 3G, but the cust service and billing is questionable.
Bell sucks for signal, Telus was good when I had them although had issues with them too.

OMG LOL, $60-115 for a damn plan?

I am with Fido, and I get unlimited 24/7 with no blackout periods, 500 txt messages, voice mail and caller ID for $35/month with no tax. Who in their right mind would go with Rogers, when Fido is so much cheaper.
Just so you know, I got the $45 month Unlimited City Fido plan before they were baught by Rogers, and they still honour the price. But a year ago they called and offered me a free phone and $10 off my plan to bring it to $35/month just to resign with them
BTW, Yes I do have an unlocked iPhone
#13.1 excalpius on 28 Jun 2008 - 19:57
I thought Fido wasn't available in areas where Rogers has coverage and vice versa? Is that new? What about US rates to and from Canada via Fido?

Here are Fido's iPhone plans...they are identical to Rogers.

Just say no.

nm...it looks like Rogers was allowed to buy Fido...unbelievable from a regulatory perspective.

North America...the best governments lobbyist money can buy.

Haha now go celebrate Ted Roger's birthday, I think he is a very "hard worker" hahaha

Jeez. They estimated the BOM price of iPhone 2.0 to be ~$170. From where else did you think they were going to make up for that tiny mark-up margin to cover all the cost of marketing and to cover the loss per device?
#15.1 excalpius on 28 Jun 2008 - 20:14
Um, the same way the American carriers do...ahem.

And with the Canadian dollar now STRONGER than the US dollar why are Canadians still being charged a premium price for everything like they were over the past fifty years? The price should be CHEAPER to Canadians with the stronger dollar, not more expensive. Not any more.

Rip
Off

Higher corporate taxes = higher operation costs = higher prices.
#16 Galley on 28 Jun 2008 - 18:11
Do those plans come with a jar of lubricant?
#17 DJ Specs on 28 Jun 2008 - 18:24
People who pay these extortionate rates are idiots, plain and simple. This is a pure rip off!
#18 ivanz on 28 Jun 2008 - 18:58
and Rogers was allowed to buy Fido? I guess there is plenty of competition, if you consider 1 GSM and 2 proprietary networks who collude.

No unlimited Data Plan = No iPhone for Me!

As I type this on my HTC touch with bell paying only 7/mth for unlimited data...
I almost feel sorry the suckers who buy into this crap. But I do continue to buy apple shares because I know there are enough suckers.
#20.1 Airlink on 29 Jun 2008 - 01:50
I'm waiting for the HTC Touch Pro to be release in North America. I'm betting it will kick the iSuck six ways from Sunday and twice on Monday.

As much as I want an iPhone (and it more of a want then need) I'll wait until the wireless auction is finished.
Hopefully Shaw will grab it up and offer better data packages in Canada.
#21.1 C_Guy on 30 Jun 2008 - 14:55
Don't hold your breath... you know, since Shaw doesn't offer cell service to begin with.
#22 squashpea on 29 Jun 2008 - 21:40
That is absolutely RIDICULOUS.
It makes Sprint and AT&T look like an angel for Americans (overpriced carriers, imho).

I would encourage all Canadians to not even touch the iPhone. Or any carrier who seriously believes that much money is necessary to send a text message. LESS than 100 text messages to send??? For that much? But what really boggles the mind is 150 minutes for $60!!!!!!!!!!! That's like pay as you go horrible!

It'd be cheaper to get 3 separate devices which do what the iPhone do and pay for them than to own an actual iPhone at that rate.
#23 excalpius on 30 Jun 2008 - 06:47
You'd think that Skype would RULE Canada by now. Seems to be the only way to get calls for a fair price across North America. Skype KILLED the Australian monopoly telephone company which was even WORSE than Rogers, if you can believe it.
#24 Anaron on 30 Jun 2008 - 07:01
Wow, Rogers really wants to make money off the iPhone. That's sad.
#25 TonyLock on 30 Jun 2008 - 13:21
Isn't it a ripoff that with most providers, Yanks have to pay for incomming SMS messages?
That just would not work in Europe, we just wouldn't allow it.

Really, there are far better devices out there so I don't see this "madness" affecting Canadians anytime soon.

all of Canada just got ROGERED and got s**ted on by Fido the dog
