Imation Corp. last week unveiled the Atom Flash Drive, a 1.5-inch-long portable storage device that is no larger than a paperclip and can store up to 8GB of digital files. Weighing less than one ounce and measuring a half-inch wide, the Atom Flash Drive is the storage vendor's smallest USB flash drive, it said.

Imation's Atom Flash Drive provides password protection and drive partitioning capabilities to secure data on the portable device. The tool supports Microsoft Windows Vista and is also compatible with Windows Vista ReadyBoost technology. ReadyBoost enables the USB flash drive to serve as an additional memory cache when used with Windows Vista.

But they are not classified as USB flash drives.

Why compare it to a paperclip even though it's much larger?

Personally I don't want a USB drive so small that it's easily lost or broken. The whole "small fad" is getting silly.

+1. I hate small mobile phones as well. And small MP3 players.

Why is such useless news making it to the front page? Paper clip size USB drive, ground breaking indeed. How will the computing world ever do without it!

I use these USB drives for my car head unit - perfect size for external music =)

For really small storage, you need this:

Now all they need to do is build one into an actual paperclip.

too small for my tastes. Plus the price. Unless it is hyper fast, I'd rather have the 8 gig sandisk that I picked up for 44 bucks
last week. Perhaps not hyper fast, but couldn't beat the price.

Super Talent flash drives are way small than Imation drives, I have one and it's awesome.

That's impressive stuff!

Now you can misplace your data like never before!
#17 pyehac on 30 Jun 2008 - 22:45
What they need are flash drives with locator chips so you can find them when you misplace them.

Wouldn't the dual purpose SD/USB cards from verbatim (?) be the world's smallest?
